Wait, people DON'T use Tearblast arrows? I nearly always open with them against larger machines. Blowing components off is so satisfying, and I love the animation and sound effect too. And killing a machine with its own weapons is just fun
The Tearjaw arrows are almost a necessity for big machine hunts, they both lessen machines health by tearing of components and then reduce the offensive capabilites of the machine. The Thunderjaw is easier to manage if you take away it's artillery, minigun, and lasers.
I've always played at ultra hard, where tearblast arrows are really ineffective. Ropes are usually better than tearblast arrows early game. If you tie down a machine, once the ropes are torn off, they deal loads of tear damage. Because they deal no damage before being torn off, you can tie down a machine, then tie each body part down, then if you use a single spear attack, all ropes and the body parts will get torn off at once. It's quite spectacular to see an entire machine get torn to shreds with a single spear hit.
@@room.beer.controller3032 Depends on the ammount of tear damage of the ropecaster, and the ammount of tear damage required to detach a body part. I can't really give a good answer other than that 1 rope is usually sufficient for small machines, while larger machines require 3-5 ropes for some body parts.
I’m 55 and just getting back into gaming after 25 years (my last console was a PS2!!!). I wanted an open world adventure game and had just completed Hogwarts Legacy, which was my first foray since Tomb Raider on the PS2. Hogwarts was pretty easy to master on the normal level and I wanted something harder, well HZD nearly put me off to begin with 😁 I had to have a break very early on after meeting the Sawtooth and wondered how I would ever get through this game. I do use stealth a lot but your guides are now invaluable and its so satisfying to take down the big robots and I feel quite proud of myself when my 9 year old son (who’s a gaming natural) says to me “I could not do that” 😁. He could and he will. I’m about 70% of the way through and then I’ll head into the Frozen Wilds. After watching a few of your guides on FW I have to admit I’m feeling pretty daunted by the complexity but I’ll give it a go. Thanks a lot for your hard work. Your presentation style is so good and you are definitely a professional.
Thank you for your comment! I love hearing these stories 😁 Happy to hear my videos have been helpful to you! The Frozen Wilds is awesome and so is Forbidden West when you get to it. I hope you enjoy them both!

I look forward to viewing more of these (in particular the Stalkers, which can be a real problem when they're in packs!). Keep up the good work, and I hope these videos do well for you...
I remember my first thunderjaw. I don’t remember exactly what quest I was on, but I had to pass through a creek area. On the creek was a thunderjaw. I know I wasn’t too late in the game because I had JUST gotten tear last arrows. I was both streaming and in a VC so I was willing to spend hours to kill that thing. I kept throwing myself at it over and over and through trial and error slowly began improving. I adopted my makeshift strategy of tearblasting the cannons off, running for my life to the cannons, and grabbing them. Through this fight I learned that because of how big and bulky the thunderjaw is, you can dodge through its legs for most attacks or just under its head. Anyways, I grabbed that cannon and focused first on spamming down its head to expose its weak point and remove its guns, then blast its side to expose its heart. Then I booked it to the other disk launcher and did that same thing. Around this point it would get knocked to the ground, and at this point I would just try my best to shoot that heart. I don’t quite remember if I knew about the freeze canisters at this point, but if I did, I shot them. I also learned the little divots in the ground can be nice safe spots, and that I could call my strider in as death fodder and a tad bit of chip damage. Eventually- the beast fell
Tearblast all its weapons: Disc Launcher > Lasers > Tails, then tie him down. Once it's tied down, tearblast his batteries out, that'll deal high damage on him. You can also pick up its disc launchers while its tied down and blast him with it, preferably while tied down.

Killed this thunderjaw with tearblast arrows (dismantled it like a LEGO!) and precision arrows. I didn't know about freezing or the ropes. It went like "tearblast arrow on disc launchers, run and hide, wait, back and repeat until opening the heart, then precision arrows and run and hide again, always on the high ground. Took a lot of time but worked! Now I have the full arsenal and it's tearblast-ropes-freeze-stickybombs!
Great tutorial. Also, this particular TJaw is beside some small ruins on the road - you can cheese the geography a bit and skip the ropes, the ruins will kinda do that part for you, as the beast won’t follow you down the left fork in the road. Then tearblast, freeze, precision, etc, as you described for the takedown. Furthermore, some random Carja troops came by and joined in, nice touch. Really loving this game so far, the combat feels fun and interesting. Nice that it came with Frozen Wilds, and that there’s a sequel to get right after.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying Horizon 😄 And yeah you can kinda cheese machines if you say outside their areas lol. Those ruins you're talking about are a good place for that Tjaw
Since I saw a comment describing their first thunderjaw experience, I think I should share mine. I was level 33, and I needed purple mods so I went to the exact same site as arktix. I tore off its cannons using tearblast arrows, tied it down, froze it and used the disc launcher on its heart. It took both launchers to kill it. By that point, I already had oseram arrow breaker heavy, shadow rope caster, shadow sharp shot, shadow hunter and shadow sling. So it was quite easy. I wouldn’t recommend fighting the thunderjaw until you’re above level 33. Otherwise, you will tend to struggle. If you’re planning to take down the thunderjaw early on, at least buy the shadow ropecaster so it’ll take 3-4 shots to tie it down and it will stay tied down for 90 seconds
I fight thunderjaw in early game when someone fight it first.. Then i help them until they died.. Then wait again another group until thunderjaw dead.. 😂😂😂
@@ArktixOfficial I told myself I wouldn’t research the heck out of this game and take the joy out of it, but your guides are so entertaining, I can’t stop watching.

Thanks for the guide. I'm a noob at the game and I'm just playing at Normal Difficulty. I will not follow your step by step guide on how to defeat Thunderjaw BUT I have learned a lot of info about the machine and the various weapons at Aloy's disposal. I will use what I've learned from your guide and try to come up with my own way to beat it. It will probably be way less effective than your strategy but I like to do it my way. Thanks very much again!
Thanks! Glad you were able to pick up some tips from this and will tackle it your own way. That’s exactly what I hope people will do! I show a particular strategy to show one ways it’s possible, but my hope is always that people learn something they didn’t know and walk away with new knowledge they can use to tackle it their own way 👍🏼 Have fun!
Thank you! I hope you’re finding them helpful. I’m not sure I’ll do new hunting videos for HZD at this point, but I have a Ravager video on my list for HFW!
On my way to Meridian for the first time trying to find a sawtooth for a component, I bumped into this guy instead. Thought "Eh, what the heck, I can take him!" _I could not._
Love this tutorial😎 2024 and I am still playing this beatiful game like the 1st day I played it😀 This game makes you think for a strategy first depending on what machine's you are taking on. You can rally them, stealth, traps, melee, long range or make the machines fight for you😎 My favorite strategy is to always look for a higher ground especially when I am dealing with bandits😁 Some games makes me feel that their gameplay is already fixed. It is either you use magic, guns or swords and not as versatile as the gameplay that I experienced with horizon games😁
I usually take down the discs launchers with tearblast arrows and then severely damage the Thunderjaw with its own disc launchers. If the Thunderjaw is off I freeze it by exploding the cooling container on it belly and then finish it with an ice blow from the Frozen Wilds
Only criticism I'd have is freezing before the tearblast arrows. Just a waste of resources there. Tie him down, tearblast the comps you wanna remove, then rope/freeze/precision until done. Love your content and thanks for sharing!
I feel like it would be better if you first tied down the thunderjaw, froze it then shot off its disc launchers to do a good amount of damage. Or, use tearblast arrows to tear of its disc launchers, tue it down, freeze it and use the disc launchers on its heart. Tie it down again, freeze it. If you empty both the launchers, it should be enough to kill it.
The thunderjaw is HUGE. I used to use 1 tearblast arrow in a location in the middle, where it hits the 2 disc launchers and the 2 cylinders near the tail. As soon as I do that, I hit the 2 guns on the head. I can take both of them off with 2 well placed arrows. Then I take off the armor plates that covers the heart and grab a freeze arrow or bomb. After that, I take a disc launcher and fire on the head, or the eye. It usually finishes it quite quickly
It’s funny I rely a lot on outfit changes. I sneak up with a stealth suit and lay down explosion lines and then when I get some surprise attacks with tear arrows I’ll switch my outfit and do about the same from there.
thank you. I play almost exclusively stealth (because thats just whats fun. hiding and watching the monsters fall into long convoluted traps I lay out and watching it all work) but I went into some weird underground room, something called zera cauldron, where I couldnt do any of that and went through all my healing and only took 1/4 its health off, then died. I dont have the rope weapon so Ill def get that and maybe be able to kill it now!
Strip it off of its weapons esp. the disc launchers, the lasers on its face then tie him down. Pick up the disc launchers and use it against the machine. I usually set booby traps before activating the override, so in any chance that he charges at me, it get damage along the way while I dodge.
Daemonic Thunderjaw (I suppose it is the only one you will encounter, in the frozen wilds), I like to do shock damage to his tail canister, so he you be stunned for some good time, since he is immune to frozen. Anyway tho, UH thunderjaw requires 4 TB arrows to knock off disc launchers, so you can preload 3 arrows and shot one right after to do so.
It still seems a massive battle, you are very quick at switching from one weapon to another and dodging at the same time … don’t think I’ll ever be that adept.
Hello there, I watched the whole series and it's awesome, you really put the work to help new players. This strategy is awesome but the kill time is a little to much for me, if I want to use the same strategy and make it faster what gear I need or maybe in what direction I can go to upgrade the gear to make this a little faster?
Thanks! Glad you liked the series 😄 If you have higher level gear (like Shadow or Bank bows) you'll be able to take them down much faster. The raw damage those bows will do will take them down fast.
Heya! Depending on your skill & boldness, I recommend a) shooting off the disc launchers b) freezing the TJ in your favorite way c) opening up the hearts and then d) using your shadow rattler with all damage mods to unload on the heart. Goes down SUPER fast if you can get the angle!
You can pick up the cannons that Thunderjaw drops and just bombard it with them. It will take down the machine faster than any arrows or bombs player can possess.
For me Tear Blast Arrows on Ultra Hard are pretty useless (especially on a new run, not Plus), cause their fixed Tear value is only 50 instead of 100 I turned to Hardpoint Arrows with a bunch of Tear Coils, did the job way better for me Just wanted to add this info, otherwise great guide 😊
Well, the way i kill a Tjaw is set a bunch of blast wires and insta kill it.. Rinse and repeat to get infinite shards.. Dunno if it still works on FW though...

Thunderjaws are my absolute favorite machine to fight in the whole game (haven't done Frozen Wilds yet and (perhaps obviously) haven't played Forbidden West yet). Once I learned the specific nuances of the dodge, Tjaws became *_SO_* fun to fight. I fight every one I pass because I enjoy it so much. I'm currently working on finishing the game for the first time. Stuff no one asked for: I made a tierlist of my favorites (excluding Frozen Wilds and Tallnecks because you don't fight them), with Tjaws at the top followed by Rockbreakers and Sawtooths. Everything else is in a lower tier, being based on both fun and challenge, and Glinthawks are at the very bottom, the only one in the worst tier. I *_HATE_* fighting Glinthawks. They're not per se hard, they're just so unbelievably annoying, specifically since they fly way above and directly over your head almost constantly, making it nigh-impossible to shoot them. Other than that, everything is at least slightly fun or a decent or better challenge, so yeah.
@@ArktixOfficial It's nice to hear that I'm not alone in that mindset lol. Also, I forgot to say in my original comment, great video! Your demeanor is really pleasing and your guidance is very straightforward and understandable. 😄

2024 here I just killed my first one. But the heart cover is already on there. Had to bust it open. So the info might be outdated or it depends on your story progress.
only the stalker doesnt evolve and never has any armor. the game does teach about the ropecaster...but only if u bother watching the video about them in the shop. they are however available from very early on, and players who care about weapons would check them out. still...the whole elemental and rope mechanics that u need to fill the bar...is not explained at all. if a player thinks about it more seriously, he can understand it quickly though. freeze bombs have only the advantage of leaving freeze on the ground which can help freeze targets faster by passively applying it. freezing multiplies damage X3, but only for damage arrows and not for bombs. for bombs its only X1.25. also it seems the effect doesnt stack perfectly with major weakspots like the heart of brain...but it still stacks in a significant way. i think the white circle around the rope icon is bugged and u need to stop shooting them at him for it to appear. no need to waste a ton of ropes till it appears.
@cobrazax Oh good point! I never thought about the fact that the Stalkers don't evolve, but I'm pretty sure you're right! And thanks for summarizing these other tips too. I agree there's something up with the ropecaster not showing the white circle. It happens in Forbidden West too. I wonder if it's some aspect of how machines interact with being tied down, but there doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern. Sometimes the circle appears right when you expect it to, other times it doesn't.
@@ArktixOfficial The rope caster builds tiedown status over time. Where you attach the anchor on the machine effects how quickly. It has been awhile since I played the first game but try to avoid attaching the ropecaster anchors to any removable parts to get the most use out of it.
I just run up to that MF and freeze the sheeeet out with the icerail and notch some tear moded sharpshot to reveal the heart then its just a game of jumping and spamming arrows at its heart.
Thunderjaws are a bit different in Forbidden West. You want to aim for the data nexus on their head instead of the heart. Plus, they're no longer weak to frost. I've got a Tjaw hunting guide for HFW on my list of videos to make!

Cool! Yeah you’re defiantly not alone in hating Glinthawks lol. They are pretty universally hated in the horizon community 😂
@@ArktixOfficial It's nice to hear that I'm not alone in that mindset lol. Also, I forgot to say in my original comment, great video! Your demeanor is really pleasing and your guidance is very straightforward and understandable. 😄
For Glinthawks I use fire arrows, 2 for each one
Daaaamn. Ropecaster is a thing? Hahaha no wonder I can't hit my slingshots the range is too short. Thanks for this informative and well made video.
Thanks! And yeah give the ropecaster a try!
Is this guide also good for HFW?
Hey bro i know im 1 year late for this series but can you please do one for tramplers
Very cool. Wouldn't ammo be a problem though? You shot a ton of ropes and bombs at that thing.
so i got the game currently only level like 12 trying to take a thunderjaw down useing bombs and the sling but i am useing a explosive sling i now am going to go but a frezzs sling and try aging (also i am playing in the hardst difficluty for my first run threo so i didnt really now how much hp it has
I actually killed the first thunderjaw I saw. I don't know how but I did it with shadow hunter and sharpshot bow on hard difficulty
Nice!
Tearblast cannon off, freeze or tie down, use cannon.
Song name please?
2024 here
I just killed my first one. But the heart cover is already on there. Had to bust it open. So the info might be outdated or it depends on your story progress.
Yes, you always need to remove the cover.
I recognize that is an enemy, and a machine.. in a video game.. But I still kinda felt bad for the Tussie for how bad you bullied him.
I play the game in easy mode, but it doesn't seem easy. Took me the same amount of ammo to take down Thunderjaw.
I made a strategy just for that boss its called KaBoom
does this strategy still work in FW? Thunderjaws are now strong against frost. Even with a good frost arrow, it takes forever to freeze it.
No Tjaws are quite a bit different in Forbidden West. I really need to do a new Tjaw hunting guide 😅
Total noob here but I feel like this also takes up alot of resources
Thanks
only the stalker doesnt evolve and never has any armor.
the game does teach about the ropecaster...but only if u bother watching the video about them in the shop.
they are however available from very early on, and players who care about weapons would check them out.
still...the whole elemental and rope mechanics that u need to fill the bar...is not explained at all.
if a player thinks about it more seriously, he can understand it quickly though.
freeze bombs have only the advantage of leaving freeze on the ground which can help freeze targets faster by passively applying it.
freezing multiplies damage X3, but only for damage arrows and not for bombs. for bombs its only X1.25.
also it seems the effect doesnt stack perfectly with major weakspots like the heart of brain...but it still stacks in a significant way.
i think the white circle around the rope icon is bugged and u need to stop shooting them at him for it to appear. no need to waste a ton of ropes till it appears.
We need thunderjaw guidance in FORBIDDEN WEST. this beast is really difficult to kill😢
Thunderjaws are so tough on your first try!
I just run up to that MF and freeze the sheeeet out with the icerail and notch some tear moded sharpshot to reveal the heart then its just a game of jumping and spamming arrows at its heart.
I like Thunder jaw
Me skipping all the other bosses to avoid spoiling what they look like. I wish they would just show clips of the enemy you are searching for.
Can't you kill easily without 2 disc launchers..😅😅
i killed thunderjaw glitch/ cheating hiding in the water, took a long time tho 😂😂
Well tha way I take him down is only using my Arrows and focusing nothing else no bombs no freezing bombs nothing else u was using in ur video
Bạn hướng dẫn rất hay nhưng bạn chiến đấu khi bạn đang ở level cao. Nếu bạn ở level thấp thì mọi chuyện không đơn giản như vậy.
I HATE THEM
okay

Thunderjaws are a bit different in Forbidden West. You want to aim for the data nexus on their head instead of the heart. Plus, they're no longer weak to frost. I've got a Tjaw hunting guide for HFW on my list of videos to make!
