What You Have To Know About

- A #Caique (#Caique_Parrot) like no other.
Sure, you can say that about every species... but Caique Parrots really are different. For example, this is a parrot that can fly - of course- but would rather walk, skip/jump or hop!
They are often called the 'clowns' of the parrot family; I think of them as vivacious, playful. I feel like they see life differently than my other parrots do. When they look at someting, they SEE it. If they look in your eye, they look into your soul.
Like most other parrots, Caiques have a mind of their own. Someone asked me if Cape Parrots are stubborn. Ha! I find that parrots are stubborn! Yes, Caiques have a mind of their own, but their hearts triple their size.
What You Need To Know!
Are you thinking about getting a Caique?
I wouldn't call them a 'starter' bird - that's because you already have to be accustomed to a lifestyle on cage-cleaning, feeding and entertaining! Caiques may be medium-sized parrots, but they don't know it and they don't behave as though they are.

I have never met a more attentive bird to my feelings and to my presence. My caique is black-capped and I feel like he knows so much about his environment and me. He is inquisitive and incessantly curious and happy. They are great birds and require a lot of time and care. Feisty, but also very caring birds.
Well said. You sound like an awesome owner. I agree, they take a lot of love and care and then they care back!
Har en lik din svart hode og den er alltid med meg veldig fine fugler.👋🏻😁🇳🇴
"Are you eating that or destroying it?" Is the motto with my caique 😂
Yes, that's a good description!
I love that your video is very informative in a way that doesn't make you scared of how high energy they are.
The way you explain their character, but mostly the way you present what it would be like living with that specific parrot is really special and invaluable. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thanks for saying so, Michelle. I appreciate it! What kind of parrot do you have or are you looking at? I never liked hearing descriptions that were vague and I felt applied to a lot of parrots. So I do try to hone in on a specific species and how they're unique in my descriptions.
@@ParrotBliss I have a peach-faced lovebird that I absolutely adore! The best little bird to my family and our bond is precious and flows so nice. Sometimes I think of getting another parrot. For now, gathering knowledge and enjoying your videos. I feel drawn to Meyer's parrot but I would love to be able to interact with different species.
Takk for at du postet!
Busy toddlers. Gotcha! 😂
Absolutely!
Hi Caitlyn!
Watching your videos, and with this one from 1 hour ago just found out that you are still producing them👏👏👏
They are gorgeous and you are so good with them! ❤
Thank you - they are amazing birds, but not “starter birds” meaning that they don’t bond easily. They like to dominate! LOL But when you know how to handle a Caique, they can be the sweetest!
Great and complete vídeo! 16:31 look at that bat
Bat's a good description!
Thank you for this! I'm getting my research in before getting one soon!
Good job, that way you'll both be happy! What kind of parrots are you considering?
@@ParrotBliss for sure! 😇I'm searching super hard for a caique right now, the prices have gone up sooo much! $2000 is a lot for these little guys but worth it just have to save some more!
@@kristenbennett8495 Agreed? What state do you live in? I'm fortunate, here in Florida they are available during their season ( around now)
@@ParrotBliss I live in Florida as well! Which is good for me because hopefully there will still be some around by the time I save lol
@@kristenbennett8495 Yes! What part of Florida?
My male Caique, "Mista Mischief," (!) bit my friend's (fortunately extremely well-behaved) Black Lab Service Dog, Tal, on the nose! 😀 Why? Tal had the audacity to sit up to be sure his owner was ok when Mista MIschief jumped onto her shoulder. Mischief was like "oh no, you don't understand, this is MY person!" and he ran down my friend's arm, jumped onto her lap, ran over to Tal and bit him on the nose! SO BOLD is he! (And extremely fortunate in this case that Tal didn't eat him for a snack!) Thanks for your fun video!
Thanks for sharing- That was fun! Yeah, Caiques are soooo like that! Mista Mischief is a great name- and fitting!
I was recently at the Lupa Zoo in Massachusetts. Terrible Zoo. They had terrible bird cages. One in particular was a single caique in the smallest cage, just inches on each side of the bird. The cage was completely barren. No toys. No stimulation. I tried to contact several places about it.. but i dont know if it will go anywhere. Unfortunately the laws arent on the side of parrots.
I'm sorry to hear this. It's heart-breaking to see parrots like this.
Hi, where did you get your red palm fruit?
I live in Florida, it’s in the neighborhood.
Haha. Peeling peas. My green cheek does this too!
I didn't know they had a peel until I saw a parrot remove it!
Thank you I just got one so adorable!!!
Wonderful! Consider a 2nd! They are super-social and will still bond with you, but they keep each other entertained and happy. What's your Caique's name?
So cute
The Caiques kept looking at the camera screen...looking at the other 2 Caiques and the other you??
I've often wondered, when watching parrots being filmed, if they aren't confused about what they're seeing? They don't know it's them, right?
The same concept as mirrors and the connections our feathered friends make with them?
Just wondering, if that could be what was causing their unusual "beakines" and extra "finger-nibbles" and any nervous behavior during this vid's capture?
Love your Caiques...I enjoy all the presentations of all your flock. Thank you! 🌻🌻🌻
It could be! You may be right, seeing ‘other birds’ may have thrown them off. I do think they kinda figure it out in time because they start to ignore the bird reflected back at them!
Your little friend MR HOPPER and his friend is amazing
Thank you- I agree!
Also a more colorful name than pepper ?
I have lories so understand how they are. My black cap lory likes me the most but tolerates my son and is very careful around strangers. Also loves toys and playing on his back. They remind me of my lories without the nectar diet needs.
Yes, it seems like they are both very active species. I don’t really know lorries, but they seem very similar. Thank you so much for posting!
Everyone that I know that has one says their bird is nuts LOL They are a handful they love to play rough especially on their backs hahah and love to hang upside down, oh way messy also.
People don't agree on much, but they may all agree that Caiques aren't good for people who haven't had parrots before. They are awesome, but a handfull too. Yes, and messy!
They are so pretty I been wanting one but I think I will just admire them on TH-cam.
What species do you have now?
@@ParrotBliss I just have a cockatiel now
@@Gamergirlyoshi oh, yeah, Cockatiel and Caiques wouldn’t mix well- Caiques are too aggressive
@@ParrotBliss The cockatiel never comes out. I have tried but He is just happier in his cage and being talked to.
Hi there Kalyn! How are you feeling? I love that you are a spiritual woman with all your beautiful parrots! I'm sure the peace and serenity that gives you passes on to them and makes the whole experience so much stronger and healthier. You are very lucky.
I had the experience of losing my son back in 2013, he was 27 and I miss him and think of him everyday 💔 and now that I have 2 caique parrots I feel more content and relaxed. At peace. I feel like I have 2 children again. Not that they would ever come close to the bond I had with my boys, but its nice! Im busy, not depressed. Kiwi & Ozzy are doing well. They seem to be getting along better each day. I question a lot of things they do, like Ozzy is always trying to touch beaks with kiwi. When kiwi is in his cage and ozzy is out, he will put his beak through the cage and kiwi does the same. But then other time ozzy seems aggressive. I think too that ozzy gets frustrated with kiwi when he screams everytime he gets close to him. Kiwi gets scared. And I've been calling Kiwi a male but the timidness, being so skittish and he/she is tiny compared to ozzy. I feel like this is a female caique. I wasnt going to have the dna done cuz the avian Dr. didn't have the kit to do it and I just decided to forget about it. But now I want to know.
What are your thoughts on this?
Sorry for making this long again! 🤫
Have a nice day! Hope the weathers nice down there in sunny Florida! ❤
By the way, can I send you a picture or short video of them somehow?
Yes, you can send it in the FB or Instagram messenger or contact me via www.ParrotBliss.com and then you can email it once we connect. :)
You pronounce Caique in two different ways in this video. Which is correct please ?
Depends on where you are in the world…
I adore my pionus pants .. ciaque also wear feather pants, but in yellow & pionus have green feather pants
Yeap
They certainly are bipolar birds lol so much moods into one.
Yes, not an easy-going parrot-
Please tell me, how to externally distinguish a female parrot Caique from a male parrot Caique ?
Sorry, Alex, they are sexually monomorphic. Only a DNA test can determine gender -- unless she lays an egg :)
They sound like toddlers. Lol
That’s accurate!
Hi, I have a black headed Caquie 4-5 months old. Lot of videos on their character and telling they change when they are around 3-4 years. How?? How does Harmon change them ? Or as youtube says only problematic in spring and after that fine?? Right??
I find that they are like people - when teenage years and hormones set it, things can be tough. Our older parrots are fine. It is during the spring/summer depending on the species.
My White Bellied male Cookie can be so affectionate and playful like puppy or even a toddler but you have to be firm with them sometimes when they misbehave and they must know you are the dominate one or they will dominate you.
I feel like the females are a little less out of hand, but I agree. One of our males would use my finger as wood, if I left him. But they are loves!
Thank you for all this information. If I may ask, how is the water temperature when you bath them. I mean can you take them along in the shower or do they need ice cold water?
No, not cold! They are accustomed to waters in warm climates. They like room temperature or a little warmer, like waters outside.
Do you know anything about love birds? As I mentioned I own a pair of budgies (apart from a dog), ia an apartment. Now that birds came into my life (one of them through the window) I grew a super interest in them (that’s to say: LOVE;) and of course woul like to have more.
Now...living in an apartment where they fly free (all covered in wooden floor) it was a precious piece of info when you mentioned these two caiques poop a lot, so I think they could’t be the birds dor me. How’s that with Golden Conures? Cause I’d really love a “grabby” pet😜🥰
Tks!!
Regards!!
I have a video in which I talk about preferring Parrotlets to Lovebirds; they are easier than Golden Conures though. Goldens poop, for sure. More than a small Lovebird, less than a Caique.
I hope you haven't moved in lovebirds with your budgies. Two of my 6 budgies were kept together with lovebirds by the previous owners and the lovebirds injured the budgies' feet. One of them has one dislocated leg ever since and just one toe left on the other foot. There seem to be some risks to keep these birds together, especially with little room to keep them apart. 🤔
Just got pepper last weekend any recommendations for a beginner . I do have two conures and a ring neck
I don't understand, is Pepper a Caique?
How does he and the ring neck get along? I have a Ring Neck and am thinking about adding a Caiquie
@@ParrotBliss just revisited this video yes pepper is a Caique
@@jmwsr474 for the most part our ring doesn’t want to be bothered. Previous owner had an Amazon that used to bother it
Adding to last comment - my caquie is lovely and love family too. She already understands her name and Love food. She loves infant my buggies but I don't let them mix a lot. Just considering her size to my buggies
In FACT
Awesome!
Obviously I love this video. You hit it on the head. They are frequently rehomed because people don’t always do their homework and find out they just can’t deal with them. They are giant birds in little bodies. My main flock is comprised of females. They all get along and feed off each other. We say they have ADD! They can be little terrorists and get into mischief. They can also be loud and noisy. Most of the time I don’t notice it. I’ve had an Amazon, African Grey and fostered a Blue Pionus. I am first and foremost drawn to Caiques. My flock loves vegetables and nuts, not so much fruit. They can be nippy if you don’t read their body language. I agree they love baths. Most of mine love to go into the shower the rest like a large soufflé dish I have for them. I guess it boils down to doing your research before bringing one into your home. I had 3 of my girls while I had the Pionus. Despite the fact the Pionus was a larger bird my girls became a tag team of bullies. So it was necessary to keep them in separate areas. Thank you for brightening my day.🥰❤️🥰
I agree, the research is important. There is a parrot personality to match a person's, I'm sure. It's finding the right 'match.' When I was researching, or when I do now, I never felt like the descriptions told me much. The "clowns" of the parrot world really doesn't explain what it's like to have one and live with it. What was the Pionus like? They used to be on my bucket list, but I chose a Golden Instead...
The Pionus I fostered was a lovely bird. He was sweet, gentle and quiet. He liked being scratched on his head and neck. The one word I would use to describe him is, calm. That doesn’t mean he was dull and boring. He was pretty laid back. Certainly not like Caiques!
@@1hawaii21 I've heard that Pionis parrots are calm, quiet and great companions, sounds like that was your experience too.
When do you see caiques being rehomed? I’d love to rehome one.
Your looking to become a home for a caique? @@mandybrooks5789
Thanks for the video
But why are they too expensive about over 1500 $?
And there is not a huge difference with other parrots like quakers or Mayer parrot
Actually, they are more than $1,500 here at this point, probably closer to $2,000 - They are rare, just like a Meyer's Parrot and around the same price. Quakers are less because they aren't as rare.
@@ParrotBliss they are available but too expensive!
Conure is playful and cheap
This is my dream bird but there isnt a single breader in my state
Travel! Great reason to make an event out of getting a new, feathered addition!
a LITTLE not normal 🤣 we have three and I swear half the time they’re doing things to make us laugh 😂 I’ve never heard birds who make so much noise while they eat 🤣 or birds that growl for that matter
It seems the older males get, the grumpier they get. Our two girls are fine with me but mango is 23 and he gets in angry moods where I can’t do anything with him.
Ours also prefer to run or walk over flying 🤣 it’s too funny. They NEED to explore by foot
They are quite unique birds - for sure. I hope Mango gets a little less grumpy for you-
And I’m trying to figure out what a parrotlet is in Portuguese but I find “papagaio” which is the general word for the species
Me: when you would like to have caiques but only have energy, experience and the funds for budgies, parrotlets or lovebirds!😂
Solution: Bingewatching your Caique videos and in an ideal world I would have a pair of them!
Your way also has less to clean up, which is exhausting! LOL
Enjoyed the video, but more talking\ and less playing might add to your next video. My Caique is now 14 years old and I've had him sense hatching. My Caique (Maxx) enjoys the company of the 4 Parakeets that I have just to keep him company. He even lets them eat out of his bowl when he's eating. I used to rescue Cockatoos, and talk about a WORLD of difference between these birds. But a Caique is a great smaller bird for people who have the time to deal with them.
Thanks for the feedback. Your Caique sounds wonderful!
I have two ringnecks on a java tree.
Free, not caged.
I would like to have a young (5week) caique.
You think there is a possibility that they will get along from a young age.
Because caiques are mostly described as aggressive dominant to other species….
These two parrots 🦜 seem restless.
I am often advised to Not get a Caique because I repeatedly hear that after a couple years they become terrors and difficult. Is this true in any way?
th-cam.com/video/eSGNIoDNsLw/w-d-xo.html see if this one answers your question 😊
You wonder why they're getting rambunctious, but it's exactly like children demanding undivided attention from a distracted parent
Especially Caiques!
Mine shreds my fingers.
I'm sorry to hear that- is he/she young? Or new to you?
@@ParrotBliss we've had her for about 3 years. I think it's that typical story where she was sweet and cuddly when she was a baby. Now she's sexually mature she can be a psycho bird. She never bites my wife but she doesn't like me.

I worked in a pet shop many years and we had these birds. I did not like them. They are beautiful but way too much energy. They are more like a puppy than a bird. I'll stick to my budgies, finches and quails lol
Agreed, a LOT of energy! Yes, I understand- those little guys are under appreciated- but super fantastic birds
