Great reaction! As I am not a schoolchild, I will not comment on the fact that you talked about Uranus being very explosive at around 7:02 ;)

Love your reactions to this piece. For a future reaction might I suggest Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral suite Scheherazade.

I was just about to suggest that when I saw your comment. I found a performance with awesome sound:

I’ve heard this piece many times but I’ve only now noticed that Holst must have been inspired by The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas.

Same with me. Though I read Holst wasn't aware of the Dukas piece.

The best composition in the entire suite if you ask me. Absolutely amazing composition.

Much as I love rock & pop music, it can't get as deep into my brain, take me to so many different places, as classical music.

Allegro is "brisk". That is, fast but with the understanding that it sort of hustles along as if it's got an important meeting to get to.

This reminds me, in a tangential kind of way... as far as I'm aware, you have yet to visit one of Rick Wakeman's most popular tracks, Merlin the Magician... (its part of the Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, well worth a visit one day)

I remember the explosion of laughter when scientists discovered rings around Uranus. Apparently it is similar to Saturn in that regard. edited to add, are you surprised that Uranus is explosive?

Excellent composition for sure. Imo Charles Dutoit has done the ultimate recording of The Planets with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra; Karajan's is a bit too Germanic for me being that it contains a lot of English pastoral essence even it's stormy moments and elements, but such a worthwhile and magnificent study for orchestration and evocations of celestial characters, eh?

Dutoit may be the definitive source. It’s my personal favorite.

Well, that is unexpected. The Planets for me is one of the greatest classical records ever. Nice to watch here!

Btw, some folks do not use the pronunciation "your-anus", and prefer "urine-us", which raises similar scatalogical problems. 😄 On another note, this movement always seemed to me as having similarities to Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice, from about 20 years earlier. Not surprising, with the theme of a magician, and doesn't take away from Holst's genius at all, imho. That's a good one too, and is included in Disney's original Fantasia, with Mickey Mouse in the titular role - worth watching. Now, the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and some would say Pluto (I just can't go along with the demotion, at least astrologically), symbolize the spiritual dimensions beyond Saturn, representing old age and death, among other things. Uranus is the disruptive shock of the encounter with the larger transpersonal domain, which can come through surprising awakenings or tragedies alike - and Holst captures this perfectly here, with the swings between dramatic, mysterious, and fantastic passages, like a magical mystery tour of sorts - all the while with an eerie transcendent buoyancy that says "there's something more than meets the eye going on here, and it may be scary at times, but it just might all be ok". I think you'll love the ethereal beauty of Neptune, and a Pluto movement was actually written for this in 2000, by Colin Matthews, called Pluto, the Renewer - and dedicated to Holst's daughter, who was also a composer. This was, of course, written between Pluto's discovery, and it's unfortunate downgrading from a planet to a "dwarf planet". It's actually pretty good, and fits well I think, maybe consider for inclusion? th-cam.com/video/KQ9qYmqDqOc/w-d-xo.html I think it's interesting to consider the outer spiritual planets as higher octaves of the innermost personal ones, Uranus (spiritual awakening) as a higher octave of Mercury, Neptune (spiritual love) of Venus, and Pluto (the absolute - ego death) of Mars. Try that on...

A bit off topic, but FYI typing and editing YT comments on a phone (at least on my Android) has become really hard recently. The interface just gives a one or two line deep box, which very hard to scroll and read as a whole. Plus it's become very buggy, often blanking the typepad altogether and freezing the screen or refusing to accept edits. It used to be pretty easy, but it's too much like hard work to bother most of the time now. I don't know whether Google delivery deliberately make things worse with their UI choices, but that's what it feels like 🤔.

@@JohnWhipp Glad you enjoyed it. Unless there have been some changes, he's the current guitarist of Jethro Tull, so Ian Anderson probably feels the same way about him.
(He has his own band, Albion, who do something like "folk metal" linked to Welsh legends and history. I suppose that requires a different set of musical interests to enjoy, but if you do have an interest in that there's a pretty good chance you'll like what they do.
He plays the flute, too, BTW.)
