That "majestic' section was adapted and mated with Cecil Spring-Rice's poem to create the hymn "I Vow To Thee My Country".

What have I done to deserve this? Holst? Jupiter?? Berlin??? Von Karajan????
You ARE a Joybringer! So let me also suggest Manfred Mann's "Joybringer", where he rockifies this luscious work.
For Neptune, I would suggest Neville Mariner and his Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. It matches the cosmic spirituality the music demands. Off to listen...OK! I knew you would like that. Loved your description as well. Like Finlandia, that middle section soars over the landscape most beautifully, "getting over overhanging trees", and like Finlandia, it is addicting to play or sing or hum or whistle.

What a fantastic piece of music! Manfred Mann's Earth Band used it as a basis of their song 'Joy Bringer.' Well worth a listen! You can hear how they used some of the themes.
Funny that you used the word 'Majestic' at exactly the moment I thought it.

I've always liked this track. Growing up I used to hear the start of this every night because one of our local tv stations used this as their intro music to the 6pm news. It wasn't until I got a bit older that I learned that they were using Jupiter as their theme. It's amazing how much classical music I was introduced to through TV themes, cartoons, etc. 🙂

"Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" had been used in the movies, and I can think of two examples. The ending is very similar to the Star Wars theme - John Williams adapted The Planets a great deal in the original film. And in the movie The Right Stuff, the Jupiter theme was used when John Glenn was orbiting the Earth. Holst's music is very well suited to epic movies.

That hymn used to be a regular in UK school morning assemblies too, and various other events including sport, which means a lot of folks in the UK are likely to be very familiar with that theme as the hymn, not necessarily knowing it was written by Holst as "Jupiter".

A magnificent piece. The slow stately middle section (from 3:48) was turned into the patriotic British hymn, which was played (in the instrumental original) as part of my mum's funeral. As such, the piece has a bittersweet feel for me. And you're right about it being used for sporting events - the same section is used as the official theme of the Rugby World Cup (with new lyrics as "World in Union").

The world is a sadder place now that nobody uses the word "jollity" anymore. 😉 Poor Gustav Holst, if only modern copyright laws had existed back then. He would have been a much wealthier man considering how many times themes and lines from this piece have been lifted by other composers.

Afternoon, Justin. Dave from a spring-like London (a good day to Soak Up The Sun). Huge, dramatic section, befitting of Jupiter/Zeus. It's packed full of memorable tunes. The first two themes was used in Joybringer, a big hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Then that hymn is one of the great classical melodies - love your description of soaring over a big mountain - Mount Olympus maybe. Yes, it's majestic. You're also right about it being used in a big sporting event. A vocal version, World In Union, has been the theme of the Rugby World Cup. Keep it going, JP. Some of the later sections are haunting and atmospheric.
P.S. my song ref Soak Up The Sun is by Sheryl Crow.

Max Steiner Dimitri Tompkin can you have John Williams Jerry Goldsmith Jeff James Newton Howard The great movie composers in the 40s 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s and you’re right it’s so bright and beautiful and uplifting but the best is Mars bringer of war. The 'soaring over mountains' theme was the wedding march at my first wedding. Second time around, I chose the intro to the 4th movement of Saint-Saens's Symphony #3 - also known as the theme from "Babe" I found out later (I don't have kids, I don't know from talking pig movies!). Wedding #2 worked out way better, so Saint-Saens > Holst?
