A lot of their early sound was heavily influenced and aided by eSNa who has a degree in jazz vocals from the States! She wrote/helped work on their early stuff and currently is an indie artist herself and still composes/produces & instructs other singers/idols in the recording studio -- she gets called in specifically for aiding with English pronunciation and meanings :) She also has written some top drama OSTs over the years. I'd recommend you give her a listen in the future for that jazz sound.
Thanks Caitlin for reacting to Mamamoo albums chronologically. This way we can appreciate more their development musicwise. And we can appreciate some of their experimental songs that hide inside an album.
To provide context to what was all the trend then for girl group releases mid decade 2014-2016:
Tall model type sexy kittens emphasis on sexy/suggestive choreo
Mamamoo rookie debut gambled and went opposite direction: girl next door type, emphasis on vocals with retro sound, suggestive lyrics instead
It was different it got people like me (who didnt give a rats ass about kpop) paying attention and change my view that it may have something for me afterall. Ended up stanning after seeing legendary 6th episode of mamamootv realizing these girls were the real deal.
The early retro sound got a very loyal small cult following but not big enough to get music show wins. They only won and broke thru mainstream years after.
They won with Youre the Best which it's still retro sounding but still amazing
Such an underestimed mini-album even if it has only 3 songs all of them are masterpieces! This album contains another song called "Love lane", i hope you'll check it even on your own time it's a great song
esna has a literal degree in jazz vocals :D
as for wheein I recommend you “goodbye” her vocals here incredible, “easy” because it’s a bop, “water color” her latest comeback, “springtime” she wrote this song for moomoos. thank you.

Dude honestly I can't believe this was their 2nd full MV and they went this hard. I love how it showcases their theatrical ease and vocal talent. Moon will be the death of me always and wheeins runs send me
They do another collaboration with Esna, called Ahh Oop. I believe she wrote the song, but the company gradually fazed her out of the stage productions - could be she was busy with other projects and I may be wrong. She is with them in the video and it is quite cute.
You are going to enjoy Whee In's solo album Red. She did live videos of all of the songs. Looks like she had a great time promoting.
nope, the company purposefully phased her out after having convinced her to collab with mamamoo for the song (she wrote it intending it to be her debut song). she's very much not happy how they handled things and left the company pretty much immediately after. that said, she still loves mamamoo (and the other rbw artists), just not the agency itself

Aw yay I'm so happy you're alternating between solo stuff and albums, and I'm SOOO happy you reacted to Gentleman, LOVE that jam. Wheein is going to knock your socks off, so prepare yourself.
EDIT: (Caitlyn only read this if you haven't already filmed the "Wheein reaction.") So I was ruminating over what would make a really unique "WHEEIN" reaction and I think I've got a few that will create a really well-rounded first impression.
1. Watercolor - it's the title track on her most recent album (Redd), and it seems like a really personal composition. (honestly the whole album is an absolute masterpiece)
2. TRASH ft. PH-1 (Redd)(performance video) - I think more people need to recognize a) her excellent taste in music (leans R&B) b) her EXTREMELY underrated dancing ability, she's so good.
3. Anymore (with Jung Key) Live on Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook or 1theK live - It's not a proper Wheein impression if you haven't heard her live. This one's a ballad and it made me forget how to breathe.
4. Easy ft. Sik-k - It's such an excellent track, so well-written and produced.
I cant wait for AHH OOP! It’s one of my favorite tracks from them and there’s barely any reactions to it.

oh man, esna... there's so much about her, a lot good, some not so good (the way she was treated by the company)
she's an american singer-songwriter who got started in south korea, being picked up by wa entertainment, the brand new agency that was about to debut their first girl group, mamamoo. (they later became known as rainbow bridge world). she actually was involved in quite a number of mamamoo's early songs, either co-composing or co-writing them. several of the songs they performed were actually originally things she wrote for herself but was convinced to give to mamamoo to perform (i believe the pre-debut "don't be happy" was one of those)
you'll see her again singing "ahh oop" with the girls, which is a bittersweet moment... the song is amazing, but esna's treatment reached a head here and she left the agency because of it, came back to live in the states again). "ahh oop" was a song she wrote intending to be her debut song, but she was convinced to share it with mamamoo. the stylist apparently purposefully made her look quite old for the mv (she's only a few years older than solar but looks... a lot older in that mv) and she got crapped on by knetz for being 'too old' and 'not pretty enough' ...you know, typical fare from those asshats... but the agency used that as an excuse to pull esna off of promotions...for her own song... and left it with just mamamoo...
she still absolutely adores the girls, though, and any time they're in the states for any reason she tries to be there, typically as host and/or translator for their shows
I really love their sound on their rookie days the only thing that i dont really like about is byul not having much lines.
