- Hundreds of people packed a port on the Greek island of Santorini in the early hours of Tuesday morning hoping to board a ferry to safety. More people were expected to fly out later on Tuesday as airlines set up special flights and shipping companies sent additional ferries. Hundreds of tremors have been recorded between the volcanic islands of Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea since Friday. On Tuesday morning, regular quakes, just minutes apart, continued to rattle the region.

My prayers go out to the people of Greece and Santorini ❤
Solar Maximum for ya. Solar energy effects earth quakes and volcanic activity. We've been receiving a lot of energy from the sun lately.
Be sensible. Evacuate. Be glad you are getting a warning

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right.

There's no videos of any earthquakes 😂stop being gullible
Prayers for my Greek Brothers and Sisters 🙏🇬🇷
I hope this beautiful island is spared any damage.
I know this is indeed very serious, but I must take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of… those Greek first responders 😮🔥

You'd think they'd get a few more ferries coming to the rescue.
Omg i love Greece 🇬🇷 god bless those people
It’s not really an island but rather a large volcano 😂😂
The difference in views of the experts is interesting. Greek authorities think these are signs of a larger quake about to happen, while Turkish authorities think that this is how a volcanic eruption begins. Santorini is sitting on a major volcano. If a major quake does occur, it can also cause a tsunami. As of Feb. 4th they have had 400 small earthquakes between 4.2 and 5.0 My prayers go out to both the Greeks and the Turks, may God keep them safe..❤
you better be praying to Poseidon
And Hefaistos for good measure

1:36 is these days purposefully using an Indian guy accent to Easten european news. They do it on purpose
As a Greek, I found the Indian accent over the Greek PM absolutely hilarious 😂😂😂
Especially since he is not a popular PM.
But, yes, this does seem purposeful.
Maybe the Indian is working for DW and many believe the Indian English accent is easier to understand .. but personally i find it odd too despite being an Indian myself ;) sorry my fellows :))
Greece is not east Europe is South Europe
Lol 😂 why is a big deal? I understand their English so no problem.
I would've never noticed if not pointed out...I thought it was a guy that knows English, knows his own language and understands Greek? which makes him marketable....
Volcano Kolumbo. Thats where the tremors center, above its caldera.
I've heard that.. which makes me wonder why they're saying "experts" don't think this will lead to an eruption.
i would be more concerned by a volcanic eruption than an earthquake.
It is a volcanic eruption. Just, underwater.
tsunami caused be subsea EQ is the real worry. same concern either way
The Volcano under Santorini caused the end of a civilization in the area. It was also the biggest eruption in 10,000 years, and was a VEI-7 on the volcanic explosivity index. Only the Tambora eruption in 1815 came close to how bad it was.
@@joshuabrown3525 are you referring to Thera. It wiped out the greek island population of the Minoans. I lived on Crete for 6 months. The knowledge that this could happen again is very known to them
@@RogueArcher24 I see. Thank you for the clarification. I will need to remember that..
Please be safe!
Not only earthquakes, but also other natural disasters are rapidly increasing. Every day, many tornadoes, floods, volcanic eruptions, etc. occur all over the world.
Already in the coming years we will face such a level of destruction, that no country alone can cope with it. To fix the situation, unity and efforts of all humanity are needed.
Those earthquakes and other natural disasters happen on schedule but humans did not used to be in most of those places and mother nature will not put anything on hold just because we moved there now.
@@rl8571 No, they are happening with greater frequency too. extreme oscillations in weather and percipitation, exasperated by climate change has made them more frequent and deadlier.
Sorry.. Will not be giving one cent to the likes of False Prophet Al Gore and Greta and other Warmies who say they have the answers.. the place I live was once a Great Sea, a great lake, a tropical forest before it became the upper midwest.. this is a natural process...
Earthquake of Santorini has nothing to do with other natural disasters which are rapidly creasing. Earthquake of Santorini is due to earth crust moving.
Other natural disasters are due to climate change - which is helped along by humanity.
You are mixing apples and oranges in your desire to help .
It would be nice if we knew how to separate which is due to human activity, and which humans have absolutely nothing to do with.
End of days
All my love and solidariety to the Ellenic Brothers!
Turkish geologists think this is not a sign of an oncoming large earthquake, but sign of an oncoming volcano eruption. Either way, I hope both Turks and Greeks stay safe.
Speedy response to the situation
The people living on Santorini and in that region between Canada and Mexico need to be extremely cautious now, and consider relocating as a matter of urgency.
Ha ! I got that .
Your comment shows the level of your intellect!😂
DW - Warned to avoid large indoor gatherings, not outdoor gatherings.
If Santorini erupts, both Greece and Turkey could suffer from ash clouds, and possible tsunami.
This reminds me of that Netflix series, La Palma, I think it was called. It's scary when there are not enough ferries to leave the island.😮
It wasn’t based in a true story…
God bless Santorini s island, ppl AND animals
Beautiful island. I visited there in the late 2010's. My thoughts are with all the locals. May they remain protected and safe 🙏
OMG!!! Santorini is a beautiful place. But as usual beauty has a price and Santorini has volcanos and is sitting in area where earthquakes is expected. So similar to the Philippines..nice tropical country, nice beaches, abundance of tropical fruits, fish, vegetables but has 24 active and 334 inactive volcanoes, tsunami, earthquakes… beauty always has a price! Take care citizens of Santorini. Protect yourselves.
it's a small comfort, but, at least for a few days,
the people who live on Santorini, will be able to live
without the constant crush of tourists.
True, however, if you choose to live in Santorini and make your living from tourism, then complain about tourists, you're a hypocrite. Same with any European area complaining about tourists. I bet they go on holidays too - at which time they become tourists themselves.
@@warpedweft9004 The problem with Santorini and other Greek islands - indeed, other European destinations as well like Dubrovnik, Barcelona, Venice etc - are the cruise ships who offload thousands of "tourists" every day. The descend like a swarm of locust, lotering and taking up space only as they generally do not contribute to the local economy as they hardly spend any money (they get everything on their ship). Cruise ships have destroyed so many beautiful locations around Europe. I hate every single one of them.
@@smaugthemagnificent have you not realised that the cruise ship industry pays huge sums of money to go into these places? The ships also don't anchor anywhere near the town, and it costs a fortune to get a tour over to the town on tgransport provided by locals. Its also not like you can just nip back to the ship for lunch either, and you can't take food off the ship. So you are wrong when you say they don't contribute anything to the economy. The a=main reason they don't spend up big is because a. you can't get near the shops for the crowds buying stuff and 2. We all know it's one price for the locals and 10 times that price for tourists and no one wants to get ripped off to that extent. It is not only the cruise ships though. There are plane loads of people arriving every day, and that's how the people I know got there, not on cruise ships. When you choose to live in a place like that, you have to accept what comes with it. It's like people who buy a house next to a school then complain about the noise and traffic. Don't like it? Move. You're not entitled to keep such beauty of nature to yourselves.
Historians and geologists say the ancient volcanic explosion of Santorini was the cause of the sinking of Atlantis.
Atlantis never existed it was made up by someone writing a fantasy travel story ,they were very popular the Atlantis story survived the ages ...
the story of the volcano destroying Thera in 1650 b.c. was later re-told as the Atlantis myth, yes
@@waynebrady7439The philosopher Plato spoke about Atlantis. It’s been a topic much older than some sci-fi writer.
While everyone is watching the Greek islands, has no one noticed the number of earthquakes off the coast of Alaska?
I don't know what the real norm is for Alaska, but a quick google says that since 1900 Alaska has an average of 45 >5 quakes, 320 4-5 quakes per year. And a total of 1000 quakes in Alaska each month. So, while they have had a lot recently, I am not sure it is completely out of proportion.
Santorini however appears to be suddenly active again and the last time it was truly active half of an island disappeared.
Nobody cares about Alaska lil bro
@@meatpipesyrup nobody cares about Greece either. I'm not a bro BTW.
@@warpedweft9004 I care about Greece and Alaska as well. To "notice" something it has to be reported. How can I who live in Europe thousands of miles away be aware that there are quakes in Alaska? It's not like I can feel them. In any case, Alaska is sparsely populated versus the mediterranean. A huge quake and/or volcanoe eruption in this region would have devastating consequences for human life across several countries and regions for decades to come.

Stay safe, Santorini! I’m actually more concerned for a tsunami than a tremor, as it can also cause more landslides.
Like that guy is speaking with an Indian accent 😂😂😂
Listen to the Experts: Quakes are NOT linked to Santorini´s volcano, so they say. It´s always good to rely on experts opinions.
The whole island being evacuated. Something sinister going on.
No it's not. No evacuation order has been issued by authorities. People are leaving by their own volition, and I fully understand why they are leaving. Try sleeping when there's an earthquake every 10-20 minutes or so. The mental exhaustion would be immense.

Formerly known as Thera and one of the classical sources of Atlantis.
Thera is still its official name
Prejudicial representations of Albanians and Albanian criminality by the Greek media is largely responsible for the social construction of negative stereotypes, in contrast to the commonly held belief that Greek society is neither xenophobic nor racist.[28] Anti-Albanian sentiment in Greece is more of a Greek media product, rather than a reflection of social and political attitudes.[29] Although the Greek media have largely abandoned their negative stereotyping of Albanian immigrants (since c. 2000), public perception had already been negatively influenced

Probably a good time to visit! Hard to know what is worse - mass tourism or earthquakes?
I hope all people will stay safe. on a separate note, been this year in Santorini, and I found it extremely overrated. Greece has so much nicer islands and less crowded. having said that, hope no eruption or earthquake will happen. ❤
Well for others it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth. To each their own.
Santorini CAN'T be overrated. Its absolutely unique, both geologically and its settlements on the cliffs of the caldera. Its the massive and uncontrolled tourist industry that its bad
Where is the volcano in santorini
Literally sits next to it like a next door neighbour on its own little atoll. You can see it from the island with the naked eye. It's not on the actual island itself.
Unfortunately, there are no Arab, Anatolian, Indian, Russian, or or tectonic plates, but there is water that rotates the Earth...
Yousif A Tobiya
@DW not Santorini, the quakes originate roughly 40 km off the coast.
The caldera is that big. Santorini is only the final phase of the caldera formation. Look at Krakatoa for a comparison.
All possibilities are possible.. Great risk of an earthquake at the levels of 1956.. The volcanoes of Santorini are active and there is a great risk of their activation.. 17,000 people have left the island in the last three days.
Apparently 10 000 people still stranded on island due to shortage of ferries and ticket prices from 100 euros to 500 euros
Remember to build on cliff sides, at the base of cliffs and mountains

@@avonordthat town is called Fira

@avonord The reason it is called Santorini is because of the Latin name given to the island after Saint Irene, though in Greek is Agia Irini. But its official name is Thira.
AP said it was due to volcanic activity. So what is it? Has this ever happened before? Is it the faults under the Mediterranean?

**WARNING: FALSE NEWS** Authorities are now predicting earthquakes, which is news to me and the rest of the world. Earthquakes can't be predicted, period! However, I hope that everyone stays safe.
No one's predicting earthquakes, they just know that after a series of similar scale earthquakes, even magnifying, at some point there will be a disproportionately large one. It's how tectonic plate movements and events work. We can't predict a single earthquake out of nowhere, but we can recognize patterns in cases like this

Santorini is part of a caldera. In that context, monitoring earthquake activity can allow for predictions of the likelyhood of a volcanic eruption. Look at Mount St Helens eruption and the preceding earthquake activity for a simple example.
I sure hope mother earth calms down around there and everyone gets through this alive.
What a rediculous report! Hardly a mention of the underlying geology, predictions of "the big earthquake", no, no it is not volcanic.... Santorini itself is the remains of really massive volcanic explosion, a caldera, which would have made Mount St.-Helens look like a firework in comparison. Clusters of earthquake like this are usually not a sign of an impending big earthquake, but instead an indicator of massive magma movement, possibly as a precursor to a volcanic eruption, unfortunately in this area likely to be of an explosive type. This is, after all, a region of intense volcanic activity. Any claim that this is not the case would require detailed scientific data and reasoning, after all, very many lives are at stake.
It's all Greek to me.
