    One of our senior techs at the shop had the company work truck which was the same one you're working on in this video same setup he put a radiator in it and an upper radiator hose and lower radiator hose and it took like five attempts to get the air out of the system so hard to get out of this fan and kept showing that it was overheating even though it was just pockets of air that were trapped in the system it was taking forever to travel out even using the vacuum fill system

      @@RainmanRaysRepairs If you would just learn to do suck coolant system work underwater, you wouldn't have air burbles as numerously.
      I cringed the whole time while watching this, tiny hoods with lots of stuff packed in underneath, dog houses to wrestle, tiny foot-wells to attempt to pedal dance in, everything in the way of each other...
      ...I mean, holy Katzenjammers! Why didn't they just put the engine behind the seats; in the cargo area so there would be room to scratch yourself, less often?
      It would make removing/installing the house of dog a little easier...
      ...plus, they could just move the space up front, where the engine used to live, to the back of the van so no cargo space is lost from the engine relocation.
      Yes, it is sad that mechanics don't design vehicles, instead of engineers...
      ...because, at least they would be easier to work on.

      Polaris UTV's do that. Theres a little side note in the service manuals that tell you to jack up the front as high as possible and then pop the bleeder.
      Still takes forever. I just use one of those special funnels and run the bastard till it stops bubbling. Never failed

      I have a 1983 El Camino with a small block that will do that. Once, I drove to a steep hill and pointed the front of the car uphill to get the radiator cap high above the engine. Idled it with occasional revving for 10 minutes while filling it and that did the trick. Crazy way to purge it, but effective.

    A thing to always remember is a small leak can still be the problem especially on a fleet vehicle. You or I may notice a small leak and fix it right away but a driver of a company vehicle he doesn’t care about won’t notice the leak until it’s an issue like the radiator is empty and you or I would look for a large leak but in reality it’s a very small leak over time. Lots of guys forget this.

    Just an FYI, that’s a Hydramaster truck mounted carpet cleaning unit. The coolant hoses running to the back don’t cool the pump, but instead run into a heat exchanger that heats the water going to the unit. They’re so much fun to work on ! (said with a heavy dose of sarcasm)

    I've been wanting to share this with you, today I learned it has a name. Search Western Union splice. It will improve the results of your soldering greatly. Also, use flux on the wire. Then heat the wire and touch the wire with solder. The wire will draw the solder In. When the connection is showing solder down the length and you can still see the shape of the wires, it's done. You can use needle nose pliers to get the wires wound smoothly . My wife and I enjoy watching you work. She looks at me funny when I'm telling you to grab a different tool and try a new approach, just before you do it. Excellent problem solving on the Almost Totalled suspension replacement car.

I have been told more then once they have a repair guy he can do his job. I like to help by actually doing my job too. I think frankly keeping a fleet of around 20 trucks running and in good working order as well as a number of special equipment items. I want my truck working the best it can so I do my part so far two repaired tires because I actually check my trucks working order.

I have a friend who is a Monk mechanic he asks the vehicle what's wrong and it tells him, I on the other hand am a PC tech so I can do that all day without getting mad. My friend and I helped each other out ( even though we're both old now with a variety of health problems still do when we can ) It's refreshing seeing Ray work on vehicles, giving the customer what they need and not just firing up the parts cannon ( many PC techs also utilize the unnecessary parts cannon ).

    Screw clamps used to be very good. First they were made of chrome plated spring tempered heat treated steel. Cheaper ones weren't chrome plated. These last forever. Then the best were made of stainless steel. These also just lasted. The laat box of screw clamps I bought were soft mild steel. I was able to buy some good ones at the parts store, but soon those gave way to the soft steel. The way Ray bent that back over the screw showed that these clamps are soft mild steel.

They do not stretch, nor do the screws back off, the rubber hoses compress and lead to cold leaks in a lot of occasions. Any clamp on a rubber hose or line will need to be retightened after several heat cycles because of the hose being compressed or extruding out from under the clamp. Also, virtually all worm drive clamps are made of stainless steel and are marked so on the band. The worm screw may not be SS, but the bands will be SS.
    Keep up the good work.

      I actually like the spring clamps because they keep tension on the hose. And you can line them up with the marks on a hose when reinstalling.
      There are higher quality band clamps with a spring in them too. I would feel comfortable using one of those in a "top reliability" situation.

      @Minivan Lifestyle Yeah. I'm slightly concerned I won't make as much as other techs since I don't like upselling. Guess time will tell!
      Edit: Sometimes upselling is actually a good thing, specifically when a customer comes in with, say.. an inop rear A/C in a full size SUV. If I see that their sway bar links are toast or their ball joints are knackered, I'll definitely try to sell those, since those are safety issues. Not gonna just sell a guy brakes just because I need some moolah.

    • @apoplecticwrenchmonkey
      @apoplecticwrenchmonkey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Minivan Lifestyle I'm torn on that. On one hand, a fitting would definitely be cheaper, but why is the fitting leaking? Is the fitting's hole damaged? Will a new OEM fitting actually fit and seal right, or are the threads toasted? I'd love to do a cheap 10 dollar part and I would, if the part would actually do the job. I dunno the situation here, but I do agree with you.

    Ray that hose protection sleeve looks very similar to what we used to protect cable looms in aircraft. A tip to remove or move it is to push it together and shuffle it. This relaxes the weave and allows the tube of material to open up in inner diameter, when you pull on it the opposite occurs the weave closes up and it contracts around whatever it is over. Its a bit of a faff to do but we didn't have the option of digging into a cable loom with a knife. Great video as always

  • @garyrichardson9064
    @garyrichardson9064 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You probobly were looking at the right location on the the inside of the van. That is a heat exchanger for the hot water pressure washer. If that is leaking, water flows two directions. When the pressure washer is operating it will push water into the vehicle cooling system. When not operational while the truck is running, it is possible for the truck coolant to leak through the heat exchanger.

    Those work gear clamps are not the best suited clamps. There’s a reason that pressure type clamps are used due to the heating/cooling cycles of an engine. Good lesson Ray. Have a no labor Labor Day weekend 🇺🇸

    • @jacksmith2315
      @jacksmith2315 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those spring type clamps end up losing tension over time as well cause the heating cycles fatigues the metal and loses its springyness. The best clamps are the ones like on cv axles that require the specail pliers to crimp them. What sucks about them is they're pretty much one time use. The only time ive ever had a problem with a worm gear clamp is one of those ones that has the plastic piece kinda like a wing nut so you can tighten it by hand. It was in an awkward spot so i couldn't see it was twisted a little making it so it wasnt tight enough n had a super slow leak. Once i seen it like 6 months later (thats how slow the leak was) i losened it and got it straight and fully tightened it. No problem after that

    Only at one place I worked did they fix smaller issues with their service trucks before they become big problems but they ran newer trucks so we did not have much to worry about but at those places running 5 and ten-year-old trucks, they do not normally service anything in a timely nor safe manor. At one outfit we had an outer tie rod snap causing the service truck to slide on its side down Woodward a four-lane highway. No one was killed or even hurt all that bad being the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

    Ray, on watching this I have to ask, have you checked out getting a radiator faucet for filling your radiator up with water? It's a bit less janky than kinking your garden hose since it has the valve right on it. Some are also "Push to flow" styles where you just press the faucet inside to start water flow. They're also super cheap! (Like, 10USD cheap)
