The STRANGEST Contract Situation in Oakland Raiders HISTORY | Marv Hubbard (1969 Raiders)

- While Marv Hubbard had an incredible career in the NFL and AFL with the Oakland Raiders, it started off on incredibly strange terms. In 1969, one year after releasing running back Marv Hubbard, the Oakland Raiders decided to re-sign him and bring him back to the team, saying that he was still under contract with the Raiders, even though the Raiders cut him. Understandably, Hubbard had no idea what was going on, and wanted no part of it. This is the story behind that bizarre situation.

One of the most underrated running backs in the 1970's.
Agreed; one of my favorite Raiders; maybe even in the top 5 for me.
Never heard this one before at all. Great job story-telling. That was one very strange situation. Always amazes me how such powerful teams can make such simplistic types of errors/decisions. Really well done video
My buddy used to live beside Marv Hubbard in Castro Valley. Said he was a real quiet and humble guy.
I love it at 3:04 let Jim Otto spike the ball. He started every game at center 1960-74. Maybe played every play. Number 00 !
Jim Otto is Mr. 'Raider" and for the first 210 games of the Oakland Raiders franchise he was their starting center and to my knowledge he never missed a snap. How good was he? He made 12 consecutive AFL All-Star game/Pro Bowl appearances from 1961 to 1972 and he was a First-Team All-Pro 10 times, if the NFL ever comes up with an award for centers or O-linemen it should be named after Jim Otto but it won't happen, the NFL still looks at the AFL as being an inferior league more than 50 years after the merger and the NFL hates the Raiders.
@@davidcobb2693 Otto played the entire '71 season with five torn ligaments in his knee, and regarded it as a minor inconvenience. There will literally never be men like him again.
@@davidcobb2693 How good was the Raiders' O-line in the late 60s-early 70s? Three of them are in the Hall of Fame; Otto, Gene Upshaw and Art Shell. All three were on the list of the NFL's 100 Greatest Players.
@@tygrkhat4087 And from 1971-73 Hall Of Fame Right Tackle Bob "Boomer" Brown played for the Raiders.
@@DolFan316 He retired so long ago that too many of today's fans don't know how good he was.
We need to make another push to double the subscription numbers. These stories are great!
11:06 With the Raiders leading Houston in an AFL divisional playoff game 49-7 late in the 4th quarter, QB George Blanda handed the ball off to rookie RB Marv Hubbard who scored from the 4 yard line to wrap up a 56-7 Raiders win.
This was a great story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for spotlighting.
This video reminds me of a couple of things:
1. The reserve clause in MLB that Curt Flood tried to challenge. It said if a team did not sign a player to a new contract by a certain date his rights would be retained by the team for one year at the team’s option. The MLB owners believed that meant one year, then another, in perpetuity. That belief got challenged and overturned by Marvin Miller, when he convinced Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally to play 1975 on their option years. That resulted in free agency for MLB players.
2. Bill Belichick and the Patriots used a unique way to get more compensatory draft picks. They would sign a player to a two year contract with the second year at the team’s option. The Patriots would not exercise the option, letting the player go. This counts as a free agent loss, which gave them the opportunity to get extra compensatory picks. Of course the Patriots did pretty well with a compensatory pick that fell at pick 199 in the 2000 draft…
The reserve clause is how the WHA was able to get NHL players to jump ship. This caused the NHL to do away with the reserve clause.
@@Rockhound6165 Rick Barry challenged the reserve clause in the NBA before Flood by jumping to the ABA.
Born in Salamanca NY grew up in Red House, NY. Graduated from Randolph HS, Colgate University and member of the Greater Buffalo Sports HOF.
Thanks for this!
Hey I am friends with Marv's daughter Ally and told her about your video. She was very happy with it and happy I let her know about your TH-cam channel.. I pretty sure she is a subscriber now. Thought you might wanted to know.. Little things like this make your job special to people you would have never thought your little TH-cam channel can reach. If you want to know more DM me and maybe I can connect her with you if you want to do a follow up story.. thanks for the great content.
Very good - thorough and honest.
From tiny Red House, NY. R.I.P.
Smallest town in New York State
Those types of contracts were common not only for players, but for coaches as well. Don Shula never had a contract longer than 1yr while with Miami. Oakland, like many teams, would also sign non roster players & and stash them. At the time these things were happening, it was common knowledge, nothing strange about it.
Thanks for covering Butch. Marv was my cousin. You always do a great job storytelling
man Al davis was always playing some angle
Al Davis was a shrewd businessman and he knew the rules of the times inside and out, he knew he had a diamond in the rough with Marv Hubbard and by signing him the way he did he was Al's ace in the hole so to speak.
My friend ...That story on Hubbard was amazing. I grew up a huge Hubbard fan ...As well as Guy and Tatum . But it really brought me back and didn't know much regarding that bizarre contract stuff. As an AA D3 punter myself and q6 years punting for 8 Minor league teams, to know 44 played minor league as well is FN COOL. Thank you so much for bringing me back.
He would throw the ball into the stands when he score! Mark Van eegen reminded me so much of him. I'm a Dolphins fan they battled him many times.
Marv was my teammate at Colgate in 1967. He had no moved and loved to punish tacklers. He was a great guy.
moves
Thank goodness the free agency rules are entirely different now.
Great player. Tough as hell. Couple HOF linemen in front of him.
This guy is a great story teller. My favorite videos on TH-cam is are these. Is it there by an email address to reach this channel?
That would be difficult, playing for a team you couldn't trust
Marv Hubbard and Mel Meeks. The greatest back field in minor league history. 1968 Hartford Knights dominated that year.
Great video. Have you done a video on Dick Shiner, the first QB to officially earn a perfect 158.3 rating and also the same to earn a 0.0 rating? If not, I hope you do.
There's not even an eleventh round anymore. Great job, Marv Hubbard!
I want a video of YOUR top 10 quarterbacks of all time.
Strange... what could have been even uglier... what if he had stuck with Denver? Now that would have made a mess for 1969
Denver wasn't very good or very deep at the RB position in 1969 but they did have a future HOF RB in their stable who also wore #44, Floyd Little.
As big and tough as Marv was, my Aunt had to throw him out of a restaurant late one night by taking him by the ear after Marv had one too many. 😆
The dude got a ring too, all worked out.
I was a Raiders fan for a long, long time. Since I was 5. For 40 years. I was heartbroken when the POS son of our deceased POS owner moved our team to Las Vegas. I love Vegas. But we're the OAKLAND Raiders. RIP Raiders 😔💔
Hard to call him the best Colgate player ever when Dan Fortman is in The Hall of Fame. Oh yeah, he was a lineman, so I guess he doesn't count.
What amazes me is that this kind of double contract was legal. Granted, an 11th round player wouldn't matter in the long run... but he proved that it would for him.
Great storytelling.
Ken Stablers QB rating was so low, he could have actually improved it by spiking the ball into the ground on every single play.
Interesting content, but please invest $20 in a decent Amazon microphone. Your sound is terrible. Especially when listening on a mobile device.
Eleventh round pick
Where is tatum? Is he still at Tosu?
How could they hold him to a contract once he played for Denver?
He NEVER played a game for the Donkeys, he signed with them but he was cut in training camp.
Marv Hubbard and the Raiders aren't even a 39.6. They would be BETTER OFF just SPIKING the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!
