      Tennis these days is about minimizing mistakes. The balls, courts, and the strings allow that style to be most successful. Djokovic and Nadal are the kings of that. Tennis used to be all about shotmaking. Federer is the king of that. Not only did he get older as those two ascended, the game changed to suit them better, so Federer had to make a lot more adaptations in his career than they did.

    Medvedev really does remind me of Andy Murray. You know, he hasn’t won as much as The Big 3, but he 100% had (and still has) the talent to compete with every single one of them with an equal level of ferocity. He beat Djokovic five times, and Nadal only once. Only Roger he has not beaten. But every match he played with any of them, whether he won or lost, has been really exciting and has never been a complete demolition. Daniil really is an amazing player😉

His extending the rallies, big serving, robot-like backhand are all already present. Not to mention the fact 7 months later in 2019 Miami, Federer beat him in straight-sets enroute to another title, the same calendar year Medvedev broke out and won a gazillion hard-court tournaments in a row and almost won the US-Open against Rafa. Even Medvedev said Federers game kept him from ever feeling comfortable, like he's never experienced.

      @@chriswells5983 Thanks, This is spot on analysis. In fact, Federer's game is maybe one of the best matchups against Medvedev out of the 3 of them. Medvedev's very capable of sticking with Djokovic and Nadal in extended rallies where against almost everyone but each other player they would be very comfortable, but it allows Medvedev to hang back and become like a steel wall, it's Medvedev's comfort zone. They both have to play great controlled aggression to win, but Medevdev has beaten Djokovic convincingly a couple of times in straight sets, and for the first 2 1/2 hours of their Aus Open final, Medvedev made Nadal feel sufficated like when Nadal used to other players when he was nearly impossible to hit past in his prime (Greatest comeback in GS final history to me) .
      However, Federer stands up on the baseline, hits on the rise, uses angles and slice to make the opponent have to move and react quickly to different types of shots. You can see where Federer was able rush medvedev, wrong foot him( which is hard to do) and move him forward and over, giving him difficult looks and forcing him to move awkwardly and think fast. . That's definitely not Medvedev's comfort zone,
      Federer's abiltiy to rush and take players out of their zone with his shots is something many other players have commented on

    Just watched Medvedev beat Tsitsipas in AO21 Semi. The way to beat Medvedev as Federer showed here is to mix it up with low spin slices and attacking at the net to keep him guessing. All baseline players like Medvedev don't like coming to the net so the more you take them out of their comfort zone the better. Simples!

    • @randolphzeng6051
      @randolphzeng6051 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      I actually wondered the same question when seeing Med VS Tsitsipas and therefore came here for an answer. I don't agree with what you said. It is true that Med is more a baseline player but his game has improved a lot since 2018. His baseline is stronger, more aggressive with wider angle which make it very difficult to come to the net. Another things to notice is that not every one has the net skill as Fed. Fed's net game is one of the best in the tournament. It is not that simple at all.

    • @gailyoung2787
      @gailyoung2787 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@randolphzeng6051 Exactly. I looked it up to see how Fed achieved this (and his other 2 wins, H2H 3-0) over Med. As well as the stunning net play is his ability to block the return, creating a short ball which forces the opponent forward into the court where Fed's ready to pounce. Precision and perfect timing are crucial. Yes it's not remotely simple. I really can't think of any current player who comes close to being able to execute this; . Watching just reminded me how much I've missed Roger this last year and a bit. Hope he returns fit and healthy. a for a while longer.

    people says a lot of stuff about medvedev being better than here later in his career, I agree with that. He is able to read and overcome same game plans but he still has the same returning strategy I am saying this after USO 2023. Does anyone remember in AO 22 final how Rafa was able to come back from 2 sets down against him ? He mixed the play styles from low slicing deep balls to volleying and drop shots a lot. What will happen if you keep grinding, you will end up with a very tiring and long set and he won't make errors. He is able to return all attacks, the trick is to run him around a lot and always keep him guessing, now comes the question, if 2019 Roger met with 2023 medvedev, could he still win? I would say Fed have 90 percent chance. He is the best when it comes to variety. Since Meddy's standing so back these days, like Novak and Carlos, Fed can too mix serve and volley and who's better than Federer at the net? Federer has one of the best serves in the game so I would only say if Meddy has a chance against Rog it would only be USO, on other surfaces 2019 Rog will dominate him.

      I'm sure Medvedev would have beaten Roger as many times as he would have lost to him if he had continued his career. Novak only really tries against Daniil at the Grand Slam tournament, and Daniil still managed to beat him in the final. Nadal was close to defeat twice, and at the final tournament he lost, it seems, in the semi-finals.
      Medvedev is objectively weaker than the Big Three and objectively not much weaker than them when he is in peak form.

    It never fails to crack me up that people always talk about what an eclectic game Medvedev has - but when he plays Roger you see exactly who traditional his game really is. Maybe it's because he knows he can't "junk ball" Roger because Roger has "every shot in the book" and nothing he can do will surprise Roger. It's like Kyrgios using the SABR or trying to drop shot him to death. Good luck with that, fellas! Roger is the master. You are but the student. (Yes, I'm stealing from Star Wars. LOL!)

    Such luck to have been able to witness, for more than 15 years, the best 3 players to ever in play this sport (ever since Tennis even exists), at their prime, going at each other, winning everything there is to win. And such a pity they might all go out just like that in a very short time (Fed too old, Novak for politics and Nadal injuries). There will be nothing left to see in Tennis (Tsitsipas is a bum, Medvedev is boring, Zverev is inconsistent and the rest are irrelevant and boring).

    THIS is why Roger is the GOAT period - point blank. Have whatever pov you'd like but these dudes are 15-18 years younger, Roger made quite a few errors but you can see how he can't just be broken down by slamming the ball - not like his BH used to be able to. It's amazing Roger's still playing against these guys who are slamming the ball at him he returns with one handed bh and can still make it look way less effortless than it is and pull off the win.

      the problem there is that part of the goal is to shorten points, you can't exactly have grind-out slugfest after slugfest at that age, so there is more painting of lines, higher risk. which is part of what you're seeing, besides the occasional mistimed, off the frame, whatever. he's managed it incredibly well, considering such things are in part mentality. historically well, in fact, of course.
