Ahh . . . now I get it. The first comprehensive explanation of the triangles! Thanks.

Great videos, no nonsense just the info you need to make the most of darktables tools.

Excellent explanation. I read the "channel input/output sliders" section of the parametric masks topic in the manual a few times before it suddenly 'clicked', but your explanation is clearer. In my experience so far, feathering helps control the transition, while blurring (at very low pixel values, typically under 4 for my 24 mp images) helps invisibly blend the mask against high contrast edges (e.g., a mountain against the sky). Otherwise there's often a risk of orphaned pixels showing around the mask edges. There may well be other and better uses but that's what I've noticed.

Another great video! I've watched all 111 videos and while I thought I knew about masks, I learned so much more from this updated series. Keep up the great work!
    Thanks again!

Thanks for this excellent mini series on Masks. I know so much more from your explanations, examples and experience of the subject. Darktable is such an amazing free photo manipulation tool.

Thanks! And yes, it is an amazing tool, particularly for free software!

2:50 A comment on _top_ and _bottom_ triangles - If you invert the polarity the triangles flip sides. I would rather go with _filled_ and _outlined_ triangle here.
BTW: I only know this detail thanks to your videos 😁

Yeah, multiple ways to describe it, I guess! Glad you found it helpfukl.

very clearly explained and useful details i learn again.. thanks Bruce, i still glued on your series.. at 0:26 of your video, at the bottom is shown (v3.9) and i can't to find it (i'm with 3.8.1).. anyway all look like the one i have!!

Thanks Marc. Yeah, I'm running the dev version of darktable. For this video, none of what I have covered is changing between v3.8.x and v4.0, so it's all good.

An idea/suggestion: The UI elements you use are rather small (of course it's not like Darktable makes them this size by default). I watch this video on a 17'' FullHD laptop screen so the UI elements have an OK size. If they are too small, I can move closer to the screen. If you want to watch this video on your smartphone while waiting for eg. your train or or bus you will have a much harder time so see exactly what you are doing.
My suggestion is that if you work on rather static UI element like in this video, you can enlarge that part and display it in an unused part of the video (eg. at the bottom or top). I don't know which video editor you are using to cut your videos, but from the technical point it wouldn't be much harder than import the same video to a new layer, crop to the part you work on and then scale it up and move it to a new position. That way is much easier to see what you do even on small screens.

Yeah, that is something I need to work on. I'm editing in davinci resolve, and haven't explored enough yet how to minimize the keystrokes to achieve that. I can do it, but it would be slow and add massively to my editing time. I need to learn some keyboard shortcuts, I guess!

    • @KuruGDI

@@audio2u I have no experience with Davinci Resolve and I couldn't help you there.
However you may want to take a look at th-cam.com/video/4Ij9G-f5TvA/w-d-xo.html and see if this does the trick. Crop -> Scale -> Move. This looks like a rather trivial thing to do with a duplicated video layer in Davinci Resolve.

Don't know why I would want to do this.

    • @audio2u

And that is fine. Not every part of the software has to be for every user.
I'm an audio engineer and I use reaper for that work, but I don't use every feature in the app because some of it isn't relevant to me or my workflow.

It's a pity I can't use this program. Ive now tried 3 times, downloading different versions & I cannot open any of my files. Thus I can't even get any files onto DT. None are showing up, not my D300s, D90, D7000, D600 or D7200. Going into the import tab, it does not give me the same options as the tutorials I've watched, and believe me, I've watched a few. It's a shame as I really was looking forward to checking it out

Hmm. Probably your best coffee of action would be to join the darktable-users mailing list. Someone there would be able to assist.

Can I change the garish yellow mask to a different color in a preference setting?
