    love the build man! iknow it was a year ago but you dont need to get a crank balanced unless you are doing like 900 to 1000hp but it wouldnt hurt to have them look at it check clearance and polish it

    You were right about that timing chain guide. Just found mine in the oil pan...

    IDK if all of this necessarily applies to the Japanese KA24DE, but on the Mexican version (Frontier and Xterra) the harmonic balancer nut can be removed with a breaker bar and the power steering belt looped over the AC compressor and the extra length wound over itself on the crank pulley. The belt's tension will keep the crank from moving.
    As for removing the harmonic balancer, I opted for the duck foot style of tool (also used to remove steering wheels) instead of the claw style tool used in the video. I just had to buy a couple of M6x1.0x75mm bolts and two sets of washers separately from Ace Hardware to thread into it to make it work, but afterwards the harmonic balancer popped right off the crank without much effort.
    The 24mm intake and exhaust cam bolts I used a cordless 1/2" impact for, and the 19mm chain center sprocket as well. The impact made quick work of it and also didn't spin, so it kept time while eliminating much of the struggle of two-wrenching it.
    The head bolts I used my 1/2" ratchet with a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter and 3" extension to utilize my 3/8" 10mm hex bit; I loosened them in 3 stages while following the torque pattern in reverse. I figured it would place less stress on the head instead of using the impact for that too. The casting of the 3/8" bit should be narrow enough to clear the wells to reach the bolt head, btw. The 1/2" bit on the other hand will likely be too thick to reach the bolt head at the bottom of the well.
    Hopefully these tips help anyone seeking to rebuild one of these engines. I learned to rebuild the KA in my 240SX when I was 16, so doing it again for my Xterra is just bringing back the familiarity of problems I've encountered before with the better tools I have now to make the job easier.

    The very first step for me is a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer nut. I then turn the engine over with no coil wire attached. Then I do whatever else I want. Like timing chain or remove the engine or whatever

    Hey, thanks for documenting your repair videos. They were a big help for a timing chain job that I recently finished up with the engine still in the car.

    KA Bottom end weak points are piston rings. You’re able to use the rods and upgrade pistons. I’ve build 400hp KA with stock rods and WiseCo pistons

    • @BuiltLikeThis
      @BuiltLikeThis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ya Im thinking im gonna leave the rods. Machine shop is moving veeery slow... thanks for the input

    • @boot-strapper
      @boot-strapper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much is the machine shop stuff costing and what did you end up getting done? Looking to rebuild my KA.

    • @PsBuddha562
      @PsBuddha562 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chlorophant assuming you’ve got a high mileage KA. You’re going to hot tank, deck, hone and bore the block. Polish/Balance crank shaft. Depending on shop and whatever else you’ll need or to replace. Around 280-400

    • @boot-strapper
      @boot-strapper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats not bad at all.

    • @PsBuddha562
      @PsBuddha562 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chlorophant that’s just the bottom end work. The head will cost $200 you shouldn’t pay anymore unless you’re doing some serious porting. In total for MACHINE WORK for long block no more than $800 rough estimate

    Issa 10 mm 12 point socket for the oil squirter. Use a 10mm long socket to smack the oil dip stick out.. also replace your woodruff crank key with a new one.

    I was wondering how much is a machines shop cost to balance on piston and crank shaft also the block too, like what needs to be done to the block while it’s being resurfaced? 🤔 I have an 1992 240sx ka stock and it needs new crank bearings dose make a wobble noises. Vibrating going on when I start the engine. But planing on having it rebuild. Need some guidance.

    I know this is a a super later comment. Next time you do a bottom end. Pull main, and rod caps at the same time. Pull crank out, will make removing rods, and pistons way easier.
