    We had a persimmon pop up on our place, conveniently next to our veggie garden, and it bore fruit this year. We've had one that was ready to taste just a few days ago so I brought it in and did that, and I saved the seeds in it. They're ready to do what's described here so I'm going to get on that and get more as they ripen on the tree. Hopefully I'll get some more growing out there soon!

    This reminds me of cleaning my Pawpaw seeds. I discovered what works well is a nylon bath glove, it scrapes the pulp right off of the seeds.

    Suggestion. The easiest way is to put the seeds in a mason jar. Put the lid on. Let is sit for 3 days undisturbed. Then shake jar vigorously and strain through a wire mesh strainer and repeat if needed. This works on tomatoes and other veg as well.

    I usually eat the persimmons off the tree and keep the seeds on my mouth until I chew the pulp off. They come out really clean.

    I use a hand operated stainless steel food processor to separate the pulp from the seeds. It is real simple to use and easy to clean. I gave a large amount of Persimmons to my friend and I have two empty 24oz plastic jars full of clean seeds plus a few more. I put the jars in the refrigerator. I've got a few Persimmon trees in a spot that I don't want them in. They are probably 5 or 6 years old. I plan on planting some of the seeds in part of my back yard. My driveway is lined with Persimmon trees that are pretty old but producing really great.

    When we harvest our persimmons we wash them and remove their tops, then use a metal ricer/strainer with a wooden pestle over a bowl to mash the flesh off of the seeds. It is not a fast process but it does produce results. It leaves you with the skin and seeds in the strainer and an applesauce like persimmon pulp that is easy to freeze in the bowl.

      Lyn….- Same here! October 2019 bought and ate fruits, very few seeds found, we put seeds directly into the pot and kept pot inside during winter months while sprout came up? Spring 2020 brought pot outside but did not plant trees until Fall 2020 (pot was placed in the center of many other pots on patio to protected it from being eating up due to the last experiences animals would eat the trees up before Summer come!). I have 4 healthy 3 feet tall trees growing in my back yard now October/Fall 2021.
      Question? First Persimmon tree I bought from nursery took 3-4 years to bears fruit, how long to get fruits from seeds grown trees?

  • @celmonico
    @celmonico 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I also forget to say that we use a bag that let the pulp pass and hold the seeds so when we squeeze the bag with many persimmons inside of it we remove all the pulp and leave the seeds clean, as long as the persimmon is ripen. You can tell when the persimmon is ripen when the pulp around the seeds comes off easily in your mouth or during the squeezing process.

    Thanks for the video. I found a big tree loaded with persimmons and I have been for 2 weeks picking the ones that fall from the tree with an average of 30 a day ready to be eaten. In SC there is a belief that they only get ripen after the first frost. I had never seen a wild persimmon before and what a surprise when I found a park with the big tree loaded. Now I have hundred of seeds that I am saving to plant and need to know which seed is female plant and which one is male. I have several native small persimmon plants in my farm but none has produced any fruit and I am wondering if they are male. I also know that they love to get as much sun light as possible and do not like soil with too much water. My wife made mousse persimmon and it is delicious and no need to add sugar. They are supper sweet. My wife believes that the chubby seeds are the ones that will produce fruits and the skinny ones are the male plants. I also believe that I will need male plants for pollination. Again thank you taking your time to share the knowledge.

    What if they are seeds that you have picked off the ground in the wintertime? Should I still put them in the refrigerator? I have a few trees that are really good producers that I dug around and got seeds. I am wanting to plant them.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should bee fine. Probably best to not allow them to freeze too deeply. If you simply plant them where you want them in the soil, that will usually keep them from freezing too much. What I mean by too much is that we are going below zero next week where I'm at. The seeds will lose a lot of viability if they get that cold. In the ground, they will not get that cold.

    • @EarlybirdFarmSC
      @EarlybirdFarmSC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh ok. I am in South Carolina. We don't get that cold here. It has been in the 30's this season, maybe a night or two it dipped in the 20's. Every once in a while we get down in the teens but that is about it.
      I went ahead and stuck them in a freezer bag with some moist peat moss and put them in the refrigerator. I was thinking that since they have been laying on the moist ground for a few months already that I may not need to stratifiy them but I will stick them in there for a few more months to be sure. Thanks for your help.

    @grandwonder5858 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So, they must go through 40 degrees temperature for a least 2-3 months before they would germinate sometime in late Winter or early Spring? What if I set my refrigerator temperature at 45 degrees, is it okay as well? Also, if all I have are top soil and wood-chip compost would those be okay to be used with the seeds as well? I also wonder if these rules pertain to domesticated persimmons as well.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not personally experimented with different temperatures. I just follow what they recommend online and in books. In nature they stratify outside in nature, so the temperature varies a good bit depending on the surrounding weather. If you are in an environment where they grow natively, then you can just put them in a pot and put them out doors.

    How long does it take to get green leaves from a cutting?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not done cuttings on persimmon, only seeds. But here are the general rules for cuttings: For a cutting there are tree ways to do it: Hardwood, softwood, and semi-hardwood. With both softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings you will take the cuttings with leaves and keep them although they may be trimmed some. Hardwood cuttings are taken in winter when the plant is dormant and there are no leaves. In this case, it will leaf out in the spring around the same time as other trees if the cutting took.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they are leafed out, you need to keep them in until you stay above freezing with no frost what so ever. If they are not leafed out (dormant) they can go out at any time.

I am in zone 7/b, i will put them in the fride, and i thought to pregreminate them in small really small tiny grower's containers in front of the window in february/march , and plant them outside in april when the frost is over to win a growth flush. Sure you can shake the fruit out of a full grown tree. We used to have an almond orchard. Take an axe handle. Wrap it with tire tread. Wire it on. Smack the trunk or large limb. Persimmons on the ground. The tire tread keeps you from hurting your tree

    • @sonyafeinberg7378
      @sonyafeinberg7378 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of these trees are about as thick around as I am and the trunk disappears into the canopy 40 ft or so, at least, above me and there are no lower branches - maybe I could climb the tree or just look underneath for ones that happened to have fallen recently. Maybe for some intermediate size trees this axe handle thing would work.

    Those have to be wild native persimmons because they are so small and seedy. The ones I grow in my backyard are about 3 times larger and hardly have any seeds at all. There are a few wild persimmon trees growing in the edges of woods near my house in Maryland and there used to be one growing on the parking lot area of my school, but they cut it down a couple years ago. One thing I noticed is that the wild persimmons are inedible due to their astringency and the nasty taste that they leave on your tongue that take a while to get rid off!

    • @theresa94010
      @theresa94010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      May I ask if you prune your persimmon trees? about what time of the year do you prune? Or do they need pruning? I would like to keep my tree under 10 ft for easier picking, that's why I was thinking maybe I should prune every year to keep it under control.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd guess that your persimmon is an Asian variety as those are usually much larger and with fewer seeds. With the American persimmons, you can not pick them from the tree or they will be astringent. You have to wait for them to fall by themselves and then they are nice and soft and sweet.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not prune mine. American persimmons grow to 35+ feet. Asian persimmons generally don't grow that tall with some being very short. If you have a tree you want to keep short, I'd prune it like a fruit tree - In the winter when it is dormant. I'd prune the taller branches and try to get it to grow more horizontal than vertical.

      They are wild American and are not a variety that was cross bred to be larger. Also, the Asian variety are MUCH larger.

      they're wild American persimmons not Japanese cultivated ones. but they're very good, very prolific, and very hardy for much of the Eastern(?) Southeastern, at least, United States.

    You do it different than me. Wash if they are on the ground? You have to be kidding. Just put them to you mouth and suck out the inside. Through away the skin which might have some dirt or grass on it. spit out the seeds into a cup.
    My persimmons never make it to my house.

    The actual seed germination process instructions start at 9:33. Even then, he keeps talking needlessly. Then he didn't even show the outcome!

    Video wasted 3/4 of the time to get to the point of showing the seeds. Then another 20% of the time stirring soil. What's left is 3% of useful information.

    This guy has just produced a rip-off video. More than half of the video was spent on removing the seeds and the rest of the video showed how to prepare the soil and in the latter part, the persimmon seeds were planted. But there is nothing in the video showing that the seeds ever germinated. Knock, knock. Hello! Is anybody in there
