These books were the most hotly anticipated books in the school bookshop and I remember the race we had to grab that single copy of Scorpion Swamp, which I still have and treasure. Growing up as an expat in Hong Kong, these really were front and centre of my childhood growing up and I only hope they continue to have a vibrant life into the future. They fired my imagination and were the gateway to a love of reading for me. I continue to love fantasy genres, so thank you for creating the series. As for retaining the combat system - retaining it is better because you have the option of ignoring it or not, and people use it or not anyway. If they left out the combat system, it becomes a mere Zork or CYOA format and loses a dimension, and you eliminate the choice of combat or not. So keep it in! It is definitely a key part of the FF series regardless of whether people cheated or not.
Great panel to listen to and nice that Geraldine made it in too, helped bring back plenty of memories. And now for the first time I know what Text Copyright means in the publishing pages. I don't think I ever knew there were more than two writers.
Was an amazing day Mr A. You did a great job here. Get those international voices in the crowd. Thanks so much for sharing and fingers crossed for FFF2
I used to love these as a kid growing up (still do in all truth). Island Of the Lizard King was the first I got, and although it's certainly not the best, it holds a lot of nostalgia. It's a book that has a kind of King Kong feel to it, as you go about exploring the island. I think my fave might be Appointment With F.E.A.R, though Deathtrap Dungeon runs it close. I was actually inspired to write a short story inspired by the Fighting Fantasy books, in which You are the hero. Bunged it on Smashwords for free. The story is called "You Are The Monster" (see what I did there!). Also pretty sure it inspired another story (a little longer but written in a style that mixes things up a bit... like the books)... This one I entitled "26 Minds on Standby". It can also be downloaded for free on Smashwords.
A great watch! I'm 18 years old now and unfortunately I didn't grow up with the original books (which is a pain because now it's hard to get hold of a lot of them) however fighting fantasy really shaped my childhood I hope they bring out more books and spin offs
These were fantastic when I had nothing to do in the town I lived in. Worse memory was when my father dated an evangelist woman who took great delight in trying to steal my collection of books because "they are a portal to hell"
That sounds horrible. I was fortunate that my dad was really into old fantasy and sci-fi novels and my great uncle was a avid reader and he would give us loads of books everytime we went to visit he and his wife in my dads old area he grew up. I was a young kid and reading Conan tales and Doc Sampson books and The Shadow novels and The Destroyer books and Larry Niven and Robert Heinlein and Phillip K Dick books. But i did have a similar experience when i got to a certain age and my parents decided that all my collections of starwars toys (and many other collectable figures from other tv shows and movies) ,including and hotwheels and matchbox cars and all my giant original Tonka trucks that were some of the first huge series all steel trucks and tractors, the ones that now days are worth a fortune to collectors. Lol. All my collection they wanted to take away and give away to second hand stores of all things. Lol seemed insane to me at the time as they had no awareness of value of these things or see the potential value. All my stuff would be worth loads of money in recent years, it would have been a good chunk of a retirement fund. Oh well.
Those books WERE my childhood. Thank you.
