Have you sat in an F40 1 Series recently? Audi does make very good interiors, especially regarding their design, but BMW is leaps and bounds ahead when it comes to refinement and premium quality overall. It's as if you're sitting in a car from the segment above.
I tried to get hold of an Audi A3 Sport, had it spec’d from new as a factory order. Couldn’t afford some of the more premium options as I wanted to keep monthly’s below £320… got the deal in writing, took it down the road to Sytner and they offered me an M Sport with the options I wanted from Audi for a little bit cheaper, part ex, same deposit (less than 10% OTR price). Don’t take the first deal you get, always be willing to walk away, and remember that every dealership wants to steal customers from rivals. Thanks for the great review, as always!

@@neb4587 yeah until you buy a car from a non-main dealer and it has suffered an accident or some crap before and you come back to them and they tell you it isn’t their problem! At least with a main dealer they’ll actually fix it. At cost or not at cost. At least they’ll accept liability and probably wouldn’t have even sold you a faulty car in the first place.
Forza223 Bowe using your logic. Why people are buying Bentley or Lamborghini if it still in VW group, so you can count it as expensive VW? Having brand in the same group doesn’t mean to be identical cars. Audi is different from VW in and out exactly corresponding to the vehicle price difference
exactly, why would you not use the steering wheel controls when you are driving. As has been the case for a long time you can do most things without having to touch the actual infotainment system.
Awesome comparison video Rory! One thing to point out - on the BMW 1 Series, cruise control is a standard feature even on the 118i Sport manual. It's only the active cruise control feature that requires additional spec like the automatic gearbox.
A class build quality is dogshit literally creaks and rattles everywhere if you look around. Just because a car has pretty photogenic screens for people to wank over doesn’t make it a good interior

The main issue is that you compare the A3 Sline with a normal 1 series, the look of a 1 series with the m package is more aggressive and also more beautiful.
Yeah, That Is what I notice. I have a BMW X4 M sport, and it drives 10x better then my friends A3 S line. The steering and feel in my SUV is worlds better then his CAR*******..... was not impressed when I drove his A3. I still appreciate it though.
Saw one in red the other day. It actually looked alright close up, at least in that colour. What I don't like about the 1-series is the slanted front headlights. BMW headlights should not be slanted. They should be straight like classic BMWs of the past.
People don't actually realize that Korean cars are not that much cheaper anymore nowadays. If you are comparing the same category between a European and a Korean car the price gap is not that much anymore but you still do get more standard equipment on a Korean car though.

I do wonder why this review makes a big deal of the difference in performance between them, I mean, who buys a base model car and considers performance ? I think because he said sport trim, so only wants the cosmetic and technology upgrades, because once you start doing more performance stuff the comparison breaks down
Was just looking at some BMW cars while my bike was at their dealer getting serviced. Videos and pictures really don't do justice to how good the 1 series interior. It's not flashy, but the build and material quality is insane.
Someone with good taste with spend the extra money to get the A3 with all the bell and whistles. If not he will buy the 1series BMW. (And I'm a BMW fan)
The pricing on the BMW is better. That alone will attract a lot of premium car buyers. Audi & Mercedes need to improve that alone! We recently bought a BMW 1 Series 118i M-Sport, in Storm Bay metallic, with full leather, 19in alloy wheel upgrade, Comfort pack & M-Sport Pro Pack. The interior is absolutely outstanding & must be the best in its class, the build quality is excellent & closely resembles the 4 Series interiors, that’s how much BMW have upgraded the interiors in the current 1 Series. It’s certainly very premium. I would recommend the BMW in many ways, but Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess!!

They did make better big grills, but nowthese are simply too much, the current generation Audi grills look like a retarded grinning. The previous generetions around ~2016-2019 already had pretty big grills, but still managed to look stylish, not over the top.

If it’s on finance then residual value and desirability at resale is often more important than cheaper OTR price. German badges depreciate less and offer higher likelihood of building equity ahead of the contract end-date. It’s why APR values on “less-premium” models tend to be higher in this category. Something to consider.
BMWs usually never look the best when new but as they age they are the better looking more timeless design just take a look at the E60 as an example whereas most of Audi’s design get forgotten in a few years

Based on the X2 compact SUV (look them up together) with lowered ride height and smaller wheels but it's still really tall for a hatchback so the proportions are weird. That's the problem making a car out of an SUV instead of doing it the other way round and making SUV versions of hatchbacks. Can't hide that tall SUV suspension.

Fact remains many BMWs when new look crap but as time goes on they become more appreciated and even timeless. This has happened time and again with many models. Only time will tell with this one.

Interesting comparison BUT you missed the most important part - what do they drive like? Anyone can compare features and these also vary wildly from country to country.
You forgot a major one - Audi is touchscreen only, there no knob anymore. BMW has the idrive knob in addition to having a touchscreen. A knob is much safer and easier to use whilst driving.
Excellent video as always! The Audi A3 in Singapore costs USD 92K and the Beemer 1 series for USD 103K without options. So it's never worth it buying german cars here unless you're super rich. Anyways, keep up the impeccable work Rory!

I suppose BMW had to shake of the Rover designed underpinnings and styling at some point for the 1 series. But I'm not sure its an improvement. The new 1 series just looks like a Kia, or Hyundai, with a BMW grille. The Audi A3 is quite conservative in comparison style wise, but I think I prefer it over the BMW.
I went from a BMW 120d (184hp) to a Java Green Audi S3(300hp), the 120d should be minimum definitely not enough power in the 116-118 range, did 60k miles in the BMW with no faults, the Audi seems a little more temperamental, all personal preference!

BMW wins hands down. Audi shares the same front wheel platform with other VW group cars. BMW develops its own rear wheel drive platforms which are much more fun to drive than Audi's.
I just bought an F20 120i in Sapphire Black. The new F40 design doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. The Audi, though a great car, looks too sterile IMO. The F20 sticks out and it looks modern. Great design with the long hood, and exceptional to drive. 😊
the thing about audis is every one has one atleast here in north france. bmws feel more classy and overlooked and I like that. but both cars look gorgeous. for the difference of price I would go for the 2 series bmw.
Hehe when I drove up to Rovaniemi in july one year it was+30C on arrival. Who needs heated seats 😋😋( I think it was a record high temperature) of course in winter... A very different story. 😁
I can't find any info about the Comfort&sound package, does it change depending on which country it is? Also can't find any info about the seat warmer, is that because it is included in the car for my country?
I don't understand the frustration on his part, but I can understand it on left hand drive cars, where we rest our right hand at the center arm rest. The knob is an easy reach then. In the UK you hold the wheel with right hand, and the volume knob is on the right side of it.

the 120d should be minimum definitely not enough power in the 116-118 range, did 60k miles in the BMW with no faults, the Audi seems a little more temperamental, all personal preference!

BMW wins hands down. Audi shares the same front wheel platform with other VW group cars. BMW develops its own rear wheel drive platforms which are much more fun to drive than Audi's.
That BMW 1-series has the same FWD platform as the Mini.
I just bought an F20 120i in Sapphire Black. The new F40 design doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. The Audi, though a great car, looks too sterile IMO. The F20 sticks out and it looks modern. Great design with the long hood, and exceptional to drive. 😊

the thing about audis is every one has one atleast here in north france. bmws feel more classy and overlooked and I like that. but both cars look gorgeous. for the difference of price I would go for the 2 series bmw.

1 Series has cruise control as standard!!! Only the active cruise control (keeps distance and stuff) you need to opt for the auto...
Options really depends where you live... Costs are different, but in Finland you always get heated seats. You cannot choose car without those.
Hehe when I drove up to Rovaniemi in july one year it was+30C on arrival. Who needs heated seats 😋😋( I think it was a record high temperature) of course in winter... A very different story. 😁
I can't find any info about the Comfort&sound package, does it change depending on which country it is? Also can't find any info about the seat warmer, is that because it is included in the car for my country?

I don’t get the criticism around the volume knob, when there’s volume control on the wheel
I don't understand the frustration on his part, but I can understand it on left hand drive cars, where we rest our right hand at the center arm rest. The knob is an easy reach then. In the UK you hold the wheel with right hand, and the volume knob is on the right side of it.

Personally I prefer the Audi looks front on, side and rear I prefer the BMW.
