    Thank you for covering REE Automotive. I think it's a genius idea.
    I would like to see tests of the system under load. Considering your other video on Ree, I could imagine some issues with alignment because the chassis and the brackets for the corners will have to deal with different forces and over time. Multiple swaps of the REE corner could introduce some wear to the bracket, worsening alignment. I'd imagine, if corner-chassis integration isn't top-notch, this could be a future reliability issue. Any thoughts?

  • @chris55top
    @chris55top ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I can see Mullen's does know their clients and users. However, Mullen's needs to do a clean sheet redesign. What they showed us with this model is they're not really trying. All they did was retro fit a very crude and out dated electric motor, battery pack and inverter to an old fashioned truck. This truck looks like there is a lot of wasted space. A good designed EV doesn't need a driveshaft. If you remove that driveshaft you could put a lot more batteries. Also, you can make that electric motor and inverter much more compacted. I'm sure if they let their engineers at it they could come up with something incredible.

    Mullen truck. Very nice. This is just me, but shouldn't the charge point be on the front of the truck, say behind the badge. That way, this utility truck can pull straight into a Supercharge stall without blocking other EV vehicles making it a no brainer for the driver. Repositioning the charge point adapter is just a cabling redirect.

    It's a rebadged chinese YUEJIN EC100, which is a brand of SAIC. It is quite old there - was launched 5 year ago in China and the lately updated model has a new cabin, with modern materials and design. The one in the video is a conversion from diesel truck, a clean sheet EV design would not have tilting cabin - the needed access would be through tilting passenger seat, motor would be closer to the rear axle to shorten the shaft between them. I would cancel the spare tire, it's a city truck so there is little use, specially when you mount a tail lift - spare goes. No antiroll bars front/rear - spare weight, but lose in driving confort. I'm surprised that it fitted in Class 3 with such a thin rear axle :) The batteries are popular in the truck manufacturing in China modules from CATL, you can see aluminum radiators in the bottom, but in this truck there is no battery thermal management. You spare weight, but loose cooling/heating. Interesting that CATL doesn't make this modules without radiators, only with - and manufacturers decide to instal the thermal management to them or not. Most probably the presenter made a mistake - this are 81,14 kW/h modules, for 89 - it would be four smaller modules put 2 by 2 on each side. There are same height longer modules that can fit to this wheelbase, with 106 kW/h, but - more weight. The chemistry is LFP, which looses less in cold and are less prone to degradation. Real mileage with Class 3 max weight - 100 miles.

    It feels like that box truck/Ree is indirect competition to in-wheel electric motors. I think the weakness of current in-wheel motors is the compact package. if they employ larger wheels/tires, more and beefier components can be put there.
    Interesting thought from Mullen, what if that size of truck designed to pull a trailer and match a Semi. Tesla Semi, though compact, still leaves a lot of free space.

    Seems like Mullen needs to step back & adjust how they're doing things. This seems to be very much taking an ICE-designed truck and working the EV into it.
    That works, but there are all sorts of costs in efficiency, etc. Having that motor out there driving a classic drive shaft into that rear diff. Saves you from having to design a rear integrated axle, but would seem you then pay the penalty in weight, efficiency, etc. Do that several places in the truck and it really adds up.

    • @sergiu-bolocan
      @sergiu-bolocan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't go for integrated axle, this would be more expensive and fleet operators will not be happy with complex things. Move the motor close to the rear axle and make the most shorter drive shaft. This way you keep it simple, simplest motor, simplest rear axle and you protect the motor from crazy vibrations on the axle. It's a bit more heavy, but it's much more reliable the old way.

    • @635574

    That Mullen will set like hotcakes just because it’s electric. Any fleet manager will quickly figure out the economics and will rapidly switch to EV trucks.
    Having said that, this truck looks like it’s out of the 50s. Why is there a shifter?! Why does the screen look like it came out of a 1990s? Why is it as aerodynamic as a brick?!
    Why can’t people figure out EVs and design them from the ground up.
    So frustrating to see companies put their heart and soul into these products and them coming out like nobody gave any thought about designing a good EV truck - not just sticking an EV drivetrain in a gas truck. 😕

    For the Mullen truck on display, why not more the windshield fluid reservoir to the driver's side instead. this way he can visually check levels every time he enters the truck instead of having to physically open the passenger door each time re "remembers" to check fluids. It would be more efficient in the long run, to my thinking. Even better, a light on the dash when fluids are low.
    "Damn, no fluids to wash my dirty windshield." Pulls over and gets out, with traffic flowing by, goes around the truck and finds he forgot to unlock the passenger door, has to go back around to the driver's door, again with traffic flowing by, unlocks the other door, has to go out once more to check or fill his fluid tank, and return, hopefully safely, to his seat once more.

    • @m4design552

    Why the tilt cab when "works in a drawer" would be cheaper and easier! Lazy execution on rear axel and conventional drive. The ambulance industry would be a prime target if you had gone with air ride and made the center of the cab an access for the rear. Get rid of the shift knob and put the E brake on the left side of the drivers seat...or make it electric.

    The Mullen truck seems like a dated design. The drive train layout and electrical systems make zero sense today.

    When Mullen goes bankrupt, someone will have some nice designs to buy up. If Mullen’s truck was self powering they would have something.

      It's not their design. Another comment mentions it's a rebranded truck from one of SAIC's brands.

      Muln is a Shell company! He never bothered to mention that they did not have anything to do with design and manufacturing of that truck!

    This show representative for the REE is a joke. Trying to make it sound like normal things or something really innovative. I am not impressed at all.... 🫤
