The Antenna Farm carries replacement whips by Larsen. Larsen's W640 (add a "B" to the end if you like black) is 64" long, the W490 is 49" and the W540 is 54". The whips are ~0.03" larger in diameter than the Yaesu whip. I drilled my whip mount by shaving it one bit at a time; the third bit was where I stopped. You'll lose 6m if you add a longer whip. My W490B is cut to match the ATAS whip. I just wanted black and something *a little* more sturdy. 73! -Scott
We will have to start a gofundme campaign to get Mike a proper set of drill bits. Those step drill bits are looking well worn. LOL. Also there is a youtube channel called "HOA Ham" who does ham radio videos while dealing HOA Karens.
And a vice to hold while drilling. Safety 2nd!
That wouldn't work in New Jersey. If you pressed that spike into the ground it would either (1) hit a 8" diameter rock just below the surface, or (2) puncture an oil pipeline. But I do love the idea of an auto-tuning antenna for my 450D.
And the Kyles!
It will also tune 2M and 70CM. for those shack-in-the-box fans
Like to build a kit to merge two together to make a dipole. Would have to depart from the bias TEE a bit since it would likely not have enough smoke to drive two. Still could use it's signal to drive and control a set of isolation relays. Be great for a POTA or RV etc...
Years ago when i was still living in an apartment I operated HF using a Yaesu FT-897 and a buddi stick antenna that i had on a painters pole. I would stick it out of the window (i was on the 11th floor). I would routinely work into Europe on 20 meters. Had a lot of fun making it work!
Gorgeous Kitty! I love black cats.
Only in Houston, Tx can you wear shorts and flip flops in December. Well, maybe Floriduh.
GA too
I recently bought a Yaesu 891 for my 2007 F250 Ford pick up truck. And had been using a triple mag mount with a 20 m ham stick. It worked great but changing the bands was a pain in the butt climbing up on the a truck bed and unscrewing the 20 m ham stick to put another one in… that is until I heard about the ATAS! Great antenna! The only issue I have is occasionally when changing bands, it will go up, then it’ll go down, then it’ll go up again until it finally tunes. I thought I had a defective unit, until I posted a comment about it doing this on TH-cam and found out. It’s not uncommon. You just have to have patience sometimes. Thanks for a great and informative video. 73 de Doug, N4CQD
I have the ATAS on a spike in the front yard with wire radials and it works just fine. my landlord doesn't care he is a member of the radio club I am the VP for.
What spike did you use?
@@JeremyArntz I just used a 4 ft ground rod lightly sharpened so it would pernitrate the ground easily. I do not pound in all the way, in fact I typically only pound in about 12-18 inches.
Thanks for the contact on pota day Mike !!
Afraid to put this in my yard. Women are constantly chasing me while I am driving my mobile that has the ATAS on it.
That answered the question I didn’t know I had! Thanks for the video, it still amazes me what we can get onto the air with. It just hammers home, nothing is perfect, antenna’s and life is a compromise. Enjoy the antenna you have and don’t beat on others because they have something else. I’ve really been debating installing my 891 in my Tundra and the ATAS would be a nice addition. I just love having that radio out in the park, I always go back to it so don’t want to mount it in my truck! Ha First World problems I guess!
I got a 2nd ATAS120 and using the same bracket am going to set it up for a secondary QTH antenna. I was thinking roof mount, or maybe quick deploy on my 25ft mast, but haven't played with it yet to determine the need for radials and performance. I have even tilted it horizontal on my Jeep and used as NVIS and it worked great! Waiting patiently for the premiere....
I've used mine on a 5 foot tripod as a QTH antenna on my 991a worked great I used tuned counterpoises for each band 40m 20m 18m 15m 10m was great not having to go out on cold winter days and tune my old coil antenna :)
Yeah, but those Japanese voices …did they come with the radio from the factory? Lol! Great video, Mike! I have the ATAS on my vehicle based on all the results you have posted over the years? I have another “better” screwdriver, antenna, but It’s just too heavy for my current vehicle set up. Frankly, I could not ask for anything more from the ATAS. I appreciate the knowledge you share.
I had no idea you could hold the PTT button and push the up and down button to fine tune the antenna. AMAZING!!
Stick with me bub, you just might learn something lol!
this is my exact setup when i rv. and run a pota station. easy to pack and never fails to tune.
I love my ATAS 120 antenna on my car with my 891. Good one Mike.
I had no idea that there was such a thing! What other kinds of active tuning antennas are there?
Some magnetic loop antennas have remote control for the tuning capacitor. Magloops have a very narrow bandwidth, and just standing near the antenna can change the results, so a remote tuner is very helpful!
My ATAS is on the roof of my shack with only 4 radials - works great and a nice complement to the horizontals. I only wish I had more time to operate.
As far as 10 meters being so open right now, will there always be a band that's optimal for making contacts around the world after this solar cycle ends? Just want to make sure I get the right equipment for the future. I'm new to ham!
I first got into HF during the previous minimum. My go-to bands were 40 meters at night, 20 during the day and 30 whenever. 30 is CW/data only for most of the world (including the USA) so you might want to look elsewhere if you want to operate phone. 80 and 160 should work too but are more challenging in terms of antenna size and height. And you will still get sporadic openings on the higher bands even at a solar minimum. Chasing those can be its own form of fun.
Just waiting for my ATAS to get here.
Please keep, keeping the gate keepers from keeping.
Can you do some content on a nice clean base install and proper ground on antenna and radio. Just got a a99.
Can’t find a nice box that has coax for the siding.
How is this HOA approved? And underground sprinkler lines? My next video will Mobile HF, HOA approved when out in the park 😂.
I finally got one after Huntsville ham fest, I have it mounted on my truck took it off one weekend while camping I put it in the ground added some ground wires and did pota all weekend on the antenna.. My question is how many ground wires was you using? And how long... Thanks & 73's W8JES
Watching Mike is like watching a Marine with tools 😂. Go Army, beat Navy!
The secret is out. 🤣 I use the ATAS-120A on a tripod and a 10-40M EFHW as my primary QTH antennas with an FT-991A.
So how do you ground the ATAs with tripod? I can not get mine to work. ATAs is not recognized by my ft-710 like it is not even there.
You can replace the Atas on your vehicle with a DX Commander. I know, because I saw it on TH-cam...
I have an ATAS-120 on a 30 foot mast for my shack. I love it. Works great.
So you have it grounded? How. Radials?
What mounts do you use in your vehicle?
How bizarre, was just reading the manual for dx10 and learnt about this antenna, picked up my phone and had a notification on screen about this video. Must be a sign.
Is it worth getting? Wondering how well it will perform compared to a cobwebb?
I bet the HOA will complain that the counterpose is not grass green colour. Or someone could trip over counterpoise on your own land.
Have you tried it on a tripod on a faraday cloth magic carpet.
Thanks on this video Mike. I did something similar here except I tried in the air ( about 15 ft from ground level ). Without radials it did not work. Once radials were added it worked great for the short time I had it up as a compromise until I could get a new efrw up. The radials are needed along with a good grounding. 73
Oh absolutely you need radials. Good grounding I'd argue. The radials act as the other side of the antenna, or ground, and my car does the same thing. Never done any grounding with this antenna other than what was naturally there by hooking the mount to my car. I think a lot of people just misunderstand this antenna. It's absolutely fantastic and one of my favorites.
How much radials and what kind of ground.
My ATAs does not move with my ft-710 like it is not even there even with radials on a tripod.
@@davidhaman4642 I ordered the radial kit that comes for the ATAS. As far as the ground, I ran a 16 ft 10ga car audio multi strand power wire to the ground surface, connected it to an 8 ft ground rod that is linked to a section of chain link fence.
can we talk about the skeeter bite on your forehead
So getting a ground spike to mount ATAs 120a on with radials. Will not work with tripod and radials for me. My ft-710 wont even find the ATAs. Maybe my ATAs is not working. But from what i understand ATAs needs to be “Grounded” so shall see when I get my ‘spike’ have ordered a diamond mount for my truck also.
Anyone knows if the upcoming ftx-1f will support the ATAS?
It's like Lego but antennas.
Satan came outside to say hi
love it
Can send info how setup this Kq4uei what I need ty 73
I want to get an ATAS for my FT-891 to go mobile in my Suburban. Buddy of mine has one on his 857 using a triple magnet mount on his pickup. Yes, I have ATAS envy. 🤣WØRHP
Just get it!!! I love this antenna!
Very kool video Mike

Of course you can hear Japan on 10M --- you are using a Japanese radio on a Japanese antenna (serendipity)
Waaaaay too pretty of a bench for that much man glitter.
Not sure I follow you.
@hamradiotube Man Glitter = metal shavings. You keep your station so clean that the man glitter looks wrong on it.
