    I was sitting in a Saigon coffee shop writing in a journal using a fountain pen. A boy about 10 years old was astounded by my handwriting, as if I was from another planet. It occurred to me that he only uses tablet or phone to do his homework. Because of Jinhao and their inexpensive but very good fountain pens, I've relearned the pleasure of cursive handwriting, fancy inks, and I want to improve it to the point of being able to do calligraphy. Thanks for the informative video.

    Jinhao has a giant hit on their hands, which they are even maximizing with their incredible turnaround time. All this will be even more fun if Majohn can give them a run for their money.

    I just received this pen in black. The Nib is pure BUTTER!!! One of two or three of the smoothest pens I have ever written with in my entire life(the distinction for the other two smoothest pens I've used both belongs to Sheaffer, one vintage 585 14k gold nib and one model 240 in stainless steel from the 1990s) and I never expected the 159 to blow me away to the extent that it has. This pen absolutely deserves to be on the best pens of 2022 list and it's amazing how Jinhao keeps upping their game and their quality. Over the next few years this company is rapidly going to be a major force to be reckoned with, and the pen shows that we all go to are going to be forced to have to acknowledge them and treat them seriously, all in all this is pretty much a perfect pen.

    The 159s are my favorite pens. The metal 159, the first black x159, and now these newer x159s, I've got all of them and am in LOVE with them all. Maybe they're not as pretty as some of my other pens buuuut I don't care, they're a joy to write with. Maybe I just got lucky on mine, but whatever the case, I am always, ALWAYS excited to write with them and these pens definitely increase my story productivity [I write fiction] just bc they're so nice to use.
    Love your videos, they're always so much fun! Hope you have a great weekend, thank you for another great vid!

    What an excellent video: informative, funny, and poignant- really enjoyed it. I got the original x159 and ground it into a stub; when I saw the new colors, I ordered one of each. By the way, Ben Walsh of Gravitas Pens bought 200 #8 nibs from Jinhao because he can make them fit into his pens. He says Jinhao will start making other tip sizes in the #8, and he’s going to make them a standard option on his pens.

    I got the new version X159 and saw that they changed the thread connecting the nib section to the barrel , plastic instead of metal ! I was happy to see that as I then eyedropped it for much more ink capacity! the barrel as I tested it with water,was leaking at the level of the golden ring , I filled the barrel to that level with "blue tack "adhesive paste ( which could be removed ,in case you want to use the converter again...) , and of course put silicone grease on the thread ! and now I have a JinhaoX 159 eye dropped perfectly working without any leaking,with huge ink capacity!!! Great! to share with you for happy info!

    Damn, you read my mind. If they put a piston filler system in it, I'll go for it. If Jinhao got a little more adventurous with their nibs, by providing different tips and widths in the No. 8 size, it would be great too. As for the hullabaloo around Charles III, its been a long time since anyone had to arrange a Proclamation Ceremony, so I think the deep expertise needed wasnt available. If anything, it would help if they set draft a protocol that details everything needed - including a slightly larger table - and what should be used and where. It would take a bit of the pressure off for all concerned for the next time. It's not easy at times like these, and the bereaved aren't going to be in the right place mentally to arrange things like that themselves. Moreover, Charles relationship with the media will be a little tense, as he shouldnt have an opinion on anything, and should be always like a swan. In other words, the establishment is a little uneasy that he might be human. I think he may do the job admirably, if he gets some good people around him, and if he can choose his battles wisely. They've been spoiled having the late Queen around for so long. She was of a different generation, and probably bought up to use her influence more reservedly. Perhaps he might even shake things up a bit. Lol.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Charles has always had his own mind on things and while Prince of Wales, he was an activist for many causes. But he has, in his speech, renounced that path to carry on the example of the late Queen. Proof is in the putting and we'll have to see how well he does. I think he will be fine.

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, at 73 I'd want to have hung up the gloves, and be left in peace. But he can't. Trouble's simmering at home and abroad, and he can't trust all of his Privy Councillors to be straight with him either. A poignant destiny. I'm no monarchist per se, but as a man I don't envy him. I wish him well. May we all find peace.

    I'm one of those types that LOVES giving things away to people.
    Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near "rich" and can't do that 'Elvis thing' and give away Cadillacs...
    But I have always carried a fountain pen and have always found it to be an excellent conversation starter.
    These Jinhao pens are so reasonably priced, I buy them a dozen at a time and whenever I'm using the pen, if someone there comments on "wow, what a cool pen!", etc, and I really think they'd benefit from owning one, I just gift them the pen I'm using.
    Believe it or not, those "cheap" fountain pens have fostered me some great friendships over the last twenty years... These new Jinhao pens are going to make this practice of mine even easier!
    And I feel like the old fashioned "gift giving" tradition is dying out... Sometimes just freely giving a complete stranger a little trinket and telling them that you appreciate them makes all the difference in the world, especially these days.
    THANKS, JINHAO.
    Cheers, Folks!😁

    I got the initial version of the black and chrome trim, the F nib is very wet very similar to the medium size nib feel, not a bad pen honestly. The resin quality is good, I hold the Jinhao x159 with my Montblanc 146 I cannot differentiate in the feel, except that my Montblanc 146 is 14K gold EF nib. I also got the Majohn P146, this one is same in length as my MB 146, the Majohn pen cannot post, unlike Jinhao x159 which can post beautifully and does not backweight.

    Doug, Just to add a few observations beyond what you had listed. I have both the first revision and the updated gold plated version.
    I did notice the lower engraved cap band is actually quite a bit thicker, while I don't have calipers at home to check. Just putting the two pens together and offsetting the rings really shows the difference. I think it's quite too thick of a difference to just be plating.
    The other thing I noticed was that the included converter now has a steel ring at the nipple end. The first one I received did not have this ring. But both the blue and Maroon one did.
    Also another thing, Ben Walsh over at gravitas pens actually ordered 100 of these new #8 nib units for use in some of his pens as an option. So I know you can buy them separately, it just depends when it will be available to us plebeians.
    Also thank you Doug for another wonderful review! I really appreciate the time you take to produce these for us.

I own several kind of expensive pens, a Delta Alpha Romero Limited edition, a WWII Victory Fountain Pen Limited Edition Duofold, a Delta Dolcevida Orange, and a couple more. This Jinhao is such a smooth writer, classic lines, and so inexpensive. I have a green one on order, with gold clip and converter. I believe they are the best value for someone looking to start using fountains. I am 70 years old and have used fountain pens since Junior High School. Keep up the good work. I just got another X159 for the express use as an eyedropper fill pen. Filling the barrel with water it was seeping at the ring between the barrel and end cap. I gently smeared a bit of Gorilla Glue around the ring. It works very nicely. I added some silicone grease to the section threads to go along with the included ring. No leaks and it holds almost 5ml of ink. I would not have done this if it had a piston mechanism but for $10, it was worth the experiment.

    I too was an early buyer of the black/chrome x159 and was very pleased with it. In fact, I was so pleased that I also ordered the Maroon/Gold as well as a Blue/Gold. I haven't had a chance to ink them up yet since I have been on vacation and had received a Narwhal Voyager: New Orleans that I need to make time for first. Aside from the gold trim and dual color nib, both of these pens seem to have better fit and finish than the first. The original black one had some slightly visible seems from the injection moulding process along the body and cap. Neither of these new ones do. If I hold the red one up to the light and strain to look, I can still find a hint on the body, but otherwise they have been polished very well. All of the metal bands and clip are perfectly centered on the new ones, as well as any mainstream Japanese or Euro brand. There are a couple of slightly rough edges where the metal could have been polished a bit more but whaddya expect for $8.
    I just ordered the P136 a couple of days ago, too and I am curious how these pens stack up against the other recent Montblanc clone, the Wing Sung 628/629.
    Great review as always, Doug.

    Great video! The Jinhao X159 is a surprisingly good pen. I have been disappointed many times in the past with Chinese fountain pens...and I've purchased far too many to explain the why of it...and this cheap pen has become my new favorite within that genre. It's not perfect, but it works well, writes smoothly, and is inexpensive, to boot. If they ever upgrade the plastics, improve the polish, and make it a touch more substantial overall, this would be a world-beater at $20-$30. And if Jinhao ever offers it with a 14k #8 gold nib at $150, watch out! Again, another great video and thank you for your time and effort to produce them!

      Not at $150 just do a 10K or even 8K and bring that price in at 65-80 then you can say watch out!!! That would be a game changer for sure….X159 with upgraded polish and plastic’s, piston filler with brass piston setup, and 1.5 cap turn opening, then add the 8K or 10K #8 nib!

    Hello Doug! Your reviews are always very interesting. The Majhon P136 cannot have the # 8 nib, it is a # 6. The # 8 steel nib, as I have already had the opportunity to write, is a Jinhao pilot project with the initial model X159 black & silver. No Jinhao fountain pen has a piston filling system, exclusively with a screw converter that guarantees maximum diffusion and ease of use.

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, as thr converter is standard capacity for a humungous pen. I pray they take the leap into pump filling, and issue it as a special edition. Then, even though it might be more expensive, they would have a real winner on their hands, and not leave the field to Wing Sung. That was the last pen I bought and it was a pump filler, and I'm not interested in cartridge converters after that. Sorry.

    As soon as my first X159 cartridge started going dry, feed problems arose and never really cleared up. There may have been some user error along the way(ahem, pressure, improper cleaning) that caused that, but maybe I just needed an excuse to get a second. It is a nice pen, and at a great price.

    I never expected for a fountain pen company, a Chinese one at that, to possibly or even actually listen to us people who are into the hobby, let alone how they should be done right. Well since Jinhao is seemingly becoming successful with the X-159, they should try looking at Mont Blanc's other pens like the 146, 144, and others with the number 1 too, could add some variety for them in my case

    Douglas, thanks again for another fine review. After seeing this video, I received my 3-pack of the X159 MK II's. I too prefer the polished brass to the chrome. My test of the worth of this pen is simple. I inked up one of these and my Montblanc 149 and laid them on the table side by side to see which I would pick up more often. It's a toss-up.
    Regarding the Moonman, I've had a few fake 146's piston fill for quite some time (Great pens) that may just possibly have been made by Moonman. Who knows.

    As to Charles III and fountain pens: he has given Parker the Royal Warrant, and has used them for years. You are right. He has and still uses them. Be interesting to see if he uses his grandmother's Parker 51 like his mother did.

    I bought a black x159 with a fine nib and silver trim when they first came out.
    Then, more recently I bought a green x159 with a medium nib and silver trim.
    Both nibs wrote perfectly out of the package.
    I prefer the medium nib.
    I don't like the gold trim. jinhao could increase the weight of the pens to be the same weight as the Montblanc by getting a bird to sxit on the pen cap. Or get a Jinhao x750 which is exactly the same weight. My favourite pen .Metal. with nibs that are easy to swap if required if the excellent number 6 fitted M nib is unsuitable.

    Thanks for the review and I completely agree that this would be a major winner as a piston feed. Ever since I bought my first TWSBI Diamond 580 I've loved the piston feed and the idea of not having to refill the converter every 2 or 3 days (I write a LOT) fills me with joy. Thank you also for your comments re King Charles III. I'm an Aussie, so, until we petition for our freedom from the monarchy, he is our King. I'm no royalist however, having spent my life a confirmed republican, however I was very irritated by the mean sob's who pecked away at him for a fit of pique over the fountain pen/desk accoutrements. To begin with, he IS THE KING. That comes loaded with noblesse oblige, and among them is the expectation that all those people 'in waiting' will be sensible about desk decoration. I personally was appalled that those silly stands were left in his way and not put to either end of the table. Why should they be positioned for the comfort of the 'commoners' and not the top dog? It doesn't matter whether you're into the whole royal thing. Look at the toadying your (american) people do with your President! And he's just an elected official of dubious character, not some twat with a lineage longer than your arm. He is however, a human being who deserves a little respect in his time of loss - remembering also that he lost his dad last year too. So again, I thank you for your 'rant'. I at least, appreciated it. 🖋

    Glad to see that Jinhao has made improvements. However, the one I bought a few weeks back suffers from a misalignment of the feed and the nib. Took the nib and feed out of the housing, aligned them, slid them back...but as soon as I began to write, the tip of the feed moved to the side of the nib again. Pity, because the pen is quite comfortable to write with. Got my fingers crossed for the Majohn. (P.S. A thousand dollar pen is a hundred times more expensive than a ten dollar pen.)

      @@rahultawde3017 Penbbs makes its models in batches. The rare finishes like Galaxy, Amber, Niangao and Tuzi are made in even smaller numbers - 100s rather than 1000s. The model comes around again in time. I've only seen two releases of new 456s in two years. The rest of the time you can watch ebay and aliexpress to see if your favorite finish pops up, but you pay a premium. I've seen a Galaxy 456 go for over $100 on ebay from a UK seller. The more normal finishes, even if they are out of stock on the official Penbbs Etsy shop, are sometimes available on Aliexpress. You have to be vigilant. For an alternative, the new Nahvalur (Narwhal) Original Plus is a lovely vacuum filler that uses the same vac hardware as the 456. It isn't as nice in the hand in my opinion but a great pen.
