    Excellent review, Doug. I will have to consider swapping nibs. I did get the 9016. It feels good on the hand and I love the increased ink capacity of the converter. The usual Jinhao converter is puny. And the capacity of the larger converter is equal or exceeds some of my piston filler pens.
    Swapping nibs sounds perfect. I have not gotten a long knife/blade/architect nib but this may be the pen to experiment with. At the price for the nibs separately, why not?
    I do have the 9019 with a heartbeat nib. It is softer and you can certainly get some line variation. In mine it also has a wetter ink flow. Go for it, even if you have to buy another 9019. It is worth the money. Yes the 9019 is a tad larger and perhaps not as comfortable as the 9016 but I think it may be perfect in a couple of years as my hand stiffens from "old man" arthritis.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The larger converter is Jinhao's answer to the question "when will JInhao make a piston filler?". The answer - never. The 1.5ml converter is the same capacity as my Leonardo piston fillers.

    I got my 9016 from LB Stationary, it actually was early and came in a bubble mailer envelope. So far had just a bit of baby's bottom that was fixed in seconds on a 9k stone.
    I can only fill the converter with 1.3ml of ink, but still way better than anything but my eyedropper pens.

  • @johntoledo4438
    @johntoledo4438 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I do like this pen for some of the same reasons. I do like it very much with a Kanwrite UltraFlex nib. The larger converter works well when putting down as much ink as the Utlraflex. However, the converter is smaller than the 9019. They aren't interchangeable but it is still much larger than standard and fits in a more comfortable body. I did fill each converter to the brim. The 9019 fills with 1.7ml and the 9016 with 1.4ml. Quite a lot either way.

    The most interesting feature of the Jinhao 9016 is the heartbeat nib alternative. I have ordered three. The initial one was sent late with just an ordinary Jinhao nib on eBay. I slammed the seller in my review. The next two are still in the process of delivery (nearing two months now). The heartbeat nibs on the 9019 are a modest improvement over the standard x159/9019 #8 nib -- okay, the improvement is mostly that they look better. Someday, I will be able to try out the Jinhao #6 heartbeat nibs and there will be peace in Gaza.

      @@InkquiringMinds When you run out of x450's to experiment with, there's the 9016. It is light, has a cavernous cartridge, it is well proportioned and it is not hideously ugly. I don't plan to get a set of 9016's but having a few might be worth the price. In defense of the heartbeat nib, the #8 I have on the 9019 works well and the solid gold-colored plating is easy on the eyes. The best Chinese steel nib I have is on a Wing Sung 630 which was a complete surprise. Just a terrific writer. So good that I decided to skip the gold alternative and get another which turned out to be a Jun Lai 630 (same exact pen with a different band and name). Of the #8 Chinese nibs, this one is the best, so far. I would try the gold, which appears to be terrific, but I just cannot open my wallet beyond $100 USD for a Chinese fountain pen. The preponderance of large pens is probably a good thing as more people are living longer and arthritis etc will be more of an issue to a larger number of people and there are very few large diameter ball point pens. I had the misfortune of being rear ended by a van while stationary and my right hand was on the wheel. The impact led to to me getting pins and needles in my fingers after a few minutes of writing and a Sheaffer No Nonsense ball point pen came to my rescue for carbonless paper service reports. The pins and needles effect disappeared after about six months and then another van gave me a repeat dose. That took about nine months to clear up so at even a young age the need for a larger girth pen might be necessary so a company producing large diameter pens is to be welcomed.

    It's hard to believe that you can feel ripped off when you pay four or five bucks for a pen. Disappointing? Maybe. Waste of time? Perhaps. But ripped off? You must be raising cattle in your backyard for steak or grow your own mangoes. 😂😂. I subscribe to your channel but with silly remarks like that, well, nah not anymore.

      To be fair, I did immediately say "well not a rip-off for five bucks".

    I really appreciate the heads up on bad (or good) retailers. 👍 Sometimes a lower price can equal a bad package and customer service it seems. My 9019 was not writing any good at first. It felt scratchy on paper and it was like the nib was strangled and ink hardly got through but it's getting better and flows a little better and writing feels softer now. We'll see, I have hope. Is there any good nib I could use on it if it doesn't improve? 😇🩷🙏🙌

      Just swap it with a replacement Jinhao #8 unit if it doesn't get better. Have you tried flushing the nib/feed with water and a drop of Dawn (dish soap) and then rinsing it, to improve the ink flow?

      No, haven't tried that but I will. Can you remove the converter without getting ink everywhere? 🤓

      Yes. It unscrews.
