I love how he writes his songs where no discernable rhyming scheme is apparent. He takes every consonant, vowel and syllable into consideration when he writes, and forms the sounds of words into patterns that only he understands through and through. It is so disjointed and sporadic; yet it somehow flows so well. Amazing.
Syd Barret while doing it… Thinking bout a psychedelic landscape tripping balls… Some people are just natural, I can bet he just started singing that, he didn’t even think that too much, the rhyming and all that… Just enjoying the moment, great musician, but you can see he has a natural talent

SYD BARRETT a NUDE BEAUTY; a WASTED MIND (from drugs and excesses); a TRUE GENIUS who left the entire world and future generations a precious legacy: PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC. Barrett wrote some songs of that musical genre, never heard before, around the YEARS 1965/1966 and anticipated the already famous BEATLES who "gave birth" to the famous psychedelic album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967; this detail of the musical "paternity" of PSYCHEDELIA says a lot about the innate qualities possessed by SYD BARRET. I repeat the adjectives with which from my point of view I describe SYD BARRETT: a TRUE GENIUS; the CREATOR of PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC; a PRECURSOR who musically anticipated his times. He was a musician who had VERY CLEAR IDEAS in his mind when he "pricked" the guitar strings and sang over them HARMONIES AS STRANGE as they were DELICIOUS. I would add that I still consider the album THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, in which BARRET's work is predominant, "a relic" and it will be precisely those songs "out of time" that pave the way for the very first PINK FLOYD, which then passed in the hands of DAVID GILMOUR. BARRETT's two solo albums from 1970, especially the first, are to be appreciated even now despite having already completed "53 BIRTHDAYS"... Unfortunately BARRETT's musical clarity was unfortunately too short, otherwise today HE would find himself without no doubt about the PODIUM OF THE BEST musicians in the world: SYD BARRETT will still have a VERY important place in many hearts of people of all ages for all the good things he has done for MUSIC and will remain there FOREVER...!!! Whenever I hear Octopus, I want to get up from my desk at work, head off to the countryside on a spaced out ramble and do something unexpected and exciting. Although many might not 'get' the lyrics, Syd had the ability to tap into a land of magic and innocence. Most songwriters evoke themes common with what most folks can relate to but Syd could surprise people. Even after leaving Floyd, his old bandmates acknowledged he was a true original, especially his old friend Dave Gilmour
"Heigh-ho! never be still! The Old Original Favourite Grand Grasshopper's Green Herbarian Band, And the tune they play"..directly taken from the Sir Henry Newbolt poem "Rilloby-Rill"
actually lived in (exactly 100 years later)- the 1960s. In that decade there was still innocent movement of ideas. By the 70s, people had become more cynical and materialistic. It's reflected in Dark side of the moon. That wasn't for Syd - he was possibly too ethereal for rock posturing, even in one of the more intellectual bands. He understandably returned to the source of his childhood imagination- Cambridge- and seemingly lived a quiet life. A handsome, gentle, particularly English, man.
Syd Barrett was never diagnosed with a mental illness. Syd Barrett was a drug addict. He smoked joints before his time with Pink Floyd. When he met Nick Mason, he smoked joints now and then. You can read about that in Nick Mason's book. The drug LSD can cause psychosis and schizophrenia!!! The illness that Syd had was catatonia!!!

Mimi Dean Yes you’re right. It was Gilmour who changed it to Madcap and that’s what they went with. Another song was supposed to be Diamond but Gilmour changed that too. Forget which one.
At the end of the track 'FEEL' syd says"That last one was diamond,actually"-meaning that last one was very good and he was pleased with the result..it is in origin a south east English expression when somebody likes something. Londoners have their own version of this-for instance the commonly used sentence 'He was a diamond geezer.'-meaning he was a very nice bloke ( or man )..syds original written song lyrics for 'Clowns and jugglers'AKA 'Octopus' clearly state 'the madcap laughed at the man on the border'...hope this clears up your confusion..and best wishes.
