      Great video! For me, above all, the sound quality (last pro on your list). And the immersive experience in an album. Great collection of The Smiths! I take this opportunity to ask, how about the vinyl pressing of
      The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill? Do you recommend it?

    100% agree with your take that having to listen to the whole side is a pro. Listing to the full album is such an awesome experience, especially when the band intentionally crafted the album in that way. I’ve found so many more songs I love from doing that on vinyl. Love your vid thanks!

    The Pros for me are the joy my collection brings me when at the end of a long day I can sit down with a coffee and put an album on my turntable and just immerse myself in some great music. I'm an old guy who remembers buying records back in the middle ages of the 1970's and even now I love the sound the needle makes on first hitting those grooves, and the surface noise. It's all part of the experience for me. A handy tip for newbies is to go and trawl through the record racks at your local charity shop, and the bargain bins in your record store, that's how I found a mono pressing of Sgt Pepper for £10 in my local charity shop. The cover was a bit battered and the inserts were missing but the record was in ex condition. You have to have a good look at the vinyl before you buy, but it's worth it in the long run and it can boost your collection quite quickly. Many thanks for this vid, and happy collecting (and listening)

I feel like more re it’s shops are popping up in St. Louis (USA) and it makes me happy to see the resurgence. I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos.

    Good video.
    95 AUD for that record?! That's like, 74 USD. Wow haha I recently spent 35 USD on a new record and was like man that's rough. If it was twice as expensive no way I would've bought it.
    I respectfully disagree with research being a negative. Research is so much fun for me. Perhaps I just love to learn or something, because whether I'm searching for a new tv, a new CD player, a new pet, or what vinyl pressing I should buy, it's super fun learning about all the differences and figuring out what is the best fit and price point for me. One con I'll mention is having to get up halfway through the record to turn it over. How I wish I could sit in my chair for an hour and listen to the record all the way through without interruption.

    • @kirawasadiver
      @kirawasadiver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep I usually never spend that much on a record. That was a one time purchase for sure lol. Record Store Day is beyond expensive here in Australia.
      Yea I agree, I actually talked about it when I filmed the video but cut it out - but I also find research to be fun and it can definitely be a positive too! I can get sucked into days and days on my laptop research things.
      Oh you're totally right, flipping the record over half way through is sort of annoying!

    This is such a fantastic video! I started my vinyl hobby last August and I love it so much! I buy most of my vinyl used from thrift stores and websites, I have an interest in albums released from the 1950s to the 1980s. I also inherited a significant part of my uncle's record collection recently with albums from the Beatles, Elton John, the Moody Blues, and Electric Light Orchestra among many more (most of them original US pressings!) I currently have over 100+ records and there are days when it's kind of hard to decide what to listen to, haha. I love the whole vinyl listening experience - from taking the record out of the jacket and putting it on the turntable, to flipping it over when a side is done and looking at the jacket/lyrics while the music is playing.
    The pride and joy of my collection are my Lesley Gore albums, all original pressings - I enjoy listening to them often. :) Do you have any personal gems in your record collection? Thanks again for an informative video!

So they're definitely my pride and joy.

    I've only very recently become obsessed with the prospect of collecting records and as a result I've been watching a lot of videos like this one and a good few others. I remember a few years ago I was with my brother and my mum and she pulled out this little box of records she had but we never had a record player growing up so I can only assume that's why I never knew we had them. At the time I never really appreciated it but now I just really wanna get to a record store and buy my first record and start collecting since mostly all I do is listen to albums anyways. Also can't understate how much I love looking at album covers.

    Living in an apartment is the biggest reason why I never got into it, it just sounds better on speakers in my opinion.
    Good thing is that since CDs have been out for such a long time ('82?), so nowadays there are communities for that as well. Getting first presses (or non remasters) of albums that were sold in small quantities can be quite expensive. For example David Bowie on RCA, they cost around 40-70$ now and are hard to find. Same goes for most of metal music as well.
    Kira, do you have a Discogs account? If not, get one :)

    You can skip songs, just raise the needle and look at where the blank space is between the thick groove sections, that's the space of quiet in between tracks, and you drop the needle there. Although I agree with you, vinyl are awesome to listen to the full album in entirety.

    Great video with a lot of cool points. In regards to point number 5, this is one of the things I have come to love about listening to albums on vinyl. On other formats like CD or MP3, it's easy to skip tracks which don't gel with you on your first couple of listens or you don't rate as highly as other tracks on the album. However I've found that with vinyl, because it's a little bit more of an effort to get up & move the tonearm to skip a track, I'm more likely to listen to an album in its entirety & in doing so I end up appreciating some tracks I'd usually skip that little bit more.

    Hi, i agree with ever Pro and Con you mentioned except Con 5. I own a lot of vinyl records and most of my records are 12" singles. I also own plenty of vinyl albums but i much prefer the 12" single format. Most albums feature a couple of excellent or good tracks but they nearly always also feature a lot of filler tracks. For me the 12" single format is far better because i can listen to my favourite track without having to listen too or skip listening too lesser tracks. Plus in most cases 12" singles feature sleeve art that is unique to that specific release they often sound louder and have more depth of sound than vinyl albums. Also they often feature remixes and extended versions which don`t feature on the vinyl album. in my experience 12" singles suffer less from inner groove distortion which is a common problem with vinyl albums. So as i said i disagree with you when you say " if you want to get into vinyl you have to listen to vinyl albums" because i`ve dedicated my life too collecting records and i virtually only listen too 12" singles. I understand most people who collect vinyl are more into albums than 12" singles but there are no rules when it comes to art and how we as individuals enjoy it.
    One Con you didn`t mention that often troubles me when it comes to collecting is the environmental cost of collecting thousands of records and cds . Personally i have never owned a download, all of my collection is in physical format. But i often think how much damage does the production of each record and cd i own cause to the planet. The use of crude oils, plastics, inks, paper, etc it all must have a negative impact on the environment. My collection is essential to me but so is nature and the good of the planet so i find my personal consumption of physical format media to be at odds with my love of nature.
    I always enjoy your video. They are always informative and entertaining. Cheers from England.

    • @kirawasadiver
      @kirawasadiver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I filmed this video and then afterwards I looked at my 7 inches and was like ... hmm well I guess you CAN listen to singles if you want! especially if you focus upon them in your collection like you do with the 12" singles too. I only own a few 12" singles but actually one is one of my favourite records I own. I think dedicating your life to listening primarily 12" singles is pretty uncommon though! I'm impressed.
      and yes, I was also thinking about the environmental cost after I had already filmed this video! Wow, we are in sync!! It's something that bothers me too as I try to be very environmentally conscious and limit plastic in other parts of my life.

    Hey! uh, I have a question for you, Kira, I'd appreciate if you could answer! I recently discovered your channel (criminally underrated smh) through your How To: Vinyl video and it's making me even MORE hyped to start my collection!
    (Skip this paragraph if you don't wanna hear the backstory lol)
    I like how you're young AND not american just like me, 'cause my biggest issue is that I live in a fairly big city but in a suuuuuuuuuuuuper tiny state :( There are only 3 record stores in my city and all of them are extremely small (all I'm gonna mention is that they have like, 20 square meters and basically only sell older/classic records, I think that proves my point) and since in my country everything is expensive (A LOT, A. LOT. MORE EXPENSIVE, I mean, UNBELIEVABLY EXPENSIVE. I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW EXPENSIVE WTH), my collection is gonna grow slowly and I can't afford to buy unnecessary records. I'm gonna get my dad's 80s/90s records that were stored improperly for years (I hope they aren't TOO damaged tho), but I love the artists and songs on them, and I will start by buying records from my favorite bands, which happen to be "recent" (for the sake of mentioning, Skillet, Twenty One Pilots, Wallows, Arctic Monkeys, Cavetown (not a band but you got it) and Tame Impala. My main focus is Skillet, Twenty One Pilots and Arctic Monkeys, I wanna get more vinyl eventually but again, it's expensive as hell so it'll be a slow process).
    After all that story, MY QUESTION IS is there any site that ships worldwide, has reasonable prices AND sells more "contemporaneous/recent" stuff? I've been struggling to find a decent site. I found an official, very cheap online store, but they don't sell to my country, the national ones have a small diversity for international music and hardly anything from after year 2000, and the one place that sells worldwide and has diversity (yeah, you know I'm talking about Amazon lol), is super expensive. I'd love to hear from you, thanks for readig this far!

    There used to be record players that played vertically and you loaded them in to what looked like a giant cassette player. The supposed advantage/ gimmick was that it had two styli and could play both sides one after the other without needing to change the record over. Unless the record was perfectly flat it could make a scraping sound against the player. (A friend at Uni had one. Many years ago I may add - though they can still be found)
    Also, I believe there was a stereo for playing in the car which played upside down (ie the stylus was underneath the record), though this was clearly a shit idea that never caught on 🤭
    Good video. 👍

    If you are patient and look around, you can minimize your costs. For example, I do not pay $10 for a used beat up album if I don't have to. I purchase from Chinese sites for accessories etc. I make my own record cleaner. I don't pay exorbitant prices for shelving. I will watch many reviews of a particular product before making a purchase decision. For example, I purchased the Nagaoka MP110 cartridge after a couple of months looking into it, and I must say, for the price, this cartridge is/was a steal!
    It isn't that it is hot that is the problem. It is DIRECT sunlight! This is a no no. It doesn't matter too much if it gets up to 100 degrees in your place. I have had vinyl in temps up to 110 and no problems. Humidity CAN be an issue if you are not careful. I have purchased used albums that came out of someone basement or garage and are mildewy and/or moldy, and this is nice or healthy...AND it make your records noisy and is a bitch to get them clean.
    I don't look at the time spent on your collection as a con. It is an INVESTMENT! You are doing something you love. Sure, for new collectors, these are good to know, but to me, they are not cons....To me, there are a LOT of cons with streaming and mp3s......
    Here's something you can research....The history of coloured vinyl....
    Vinyl increase in value? Mostly because of the depreciation of the dollar only. If you look at how many will become a hot collectors item vs all the other records you have, I wouldn't even consider that. If you buy a new album today, and a year from now you want to sell it, you probably won't even see half of your original investment. Beatles albums and others like that are the exception, but not the rule.
    As to surface noise, I think this is just a sign of the times. When I started collecting back in the 70s, surface noise was the exception, not the rule. Sure a pop and click here and there, but that was just dirt that you didn't get completely off the record. But definitely not an exception. TODAY, new records are a little bit noisy, and I think that comes down to lack of experience and know how in the record plants. MOST of them are run and controlled by younger people who do not understand the value of a pristine record to the customer. And maybe it is a "dollar" thing on their part.....

    • @kirawasadiver
      @kirawasadiver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn a 250AUD cartridge. Good value for the price? I want to figure out what cartridge I'd like to purchase for the longterm soon. Still, these types of things are a bit more expensive than other hobbies so it's good for those new to vinyl to be aware!

    • @jerryking7502
      @jerryking7502 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kirawasadiver, in my 40 plus years in vinyl, it really doesn't have to be as much as you would think. Stay within your means. For example, that 250AUD cartridge you are looking at, might be half the cost used. All I am saying is that, sure the costs are there, but they can be minimize. I would say that about 1/2 of my records I got for about $2 Canadian(I am up to about 1000 now). I look for people selling collections, thrift stores etc. Now I admit, they have come up a bit, like $3, but patience and time go a long way. And as a HOBBY, sure it costs and takes up room, but pretty much all hobbies do to one extent or another.

I have to confess, I am one who forsake vinyl. the last 2 vinyl album I ever bought was in 1987 and it was Firefall first album and Gerry Rafferty's city to city. after a few years I have switch to cd's after vinyl was put out of circulation in 1990. you also not kidding how fragiles they all but also keep in mind needles can break as well.

    Feel a bit mean picking you up on something.However, when you said that it wasn't possible to skip tracks,well.....you can.If you have a cueing lever on your record player ,then you push the cueing lever and the arm of the record is lifted,then you move the arm over to where the track starts that you want to play. Then push cueing lever the other way and let the arm of the record player gently down on the record.
    I agree about the experience of flipping through a rack of records and finding something that looks good..I've often taken a chance on a record, purely just liking the cover art.It usually is successful. Intuition? maybe.
    Also having a physical medium such as an L.P. means you make time to enjoy it and really appreciate the music rather than being on the go and listening to a music file, which by it's nature, reduces the bass sounds and the overall sweep of the music.Listening with goods speakers is the best way to listen,sometimes.Headphones when plugged into a good amplifier can be good especially if your listening to stuff like Yes.

      @@kirawasadiver Hey Kira, the way you would know where the start of a song is is by looking at the record, you will see grooves that are a little bit more spaced out then the rest. Grooves that have music on them are typically bunched together really tight, and when the song is over, there will be a little bit of space until it goes to the next bunched up set of grooves. Just drop your needle in the open space between 2 sets of bunched up grooves and viola! You're at the song you want :) It does take more effort then just pressing a button on a CD player though, that's for sure.

      @@kirawasadiver Regarding finding the song you want,because you can see the individual bands of music on an L.p. count the tracks starting from the first track. say you want the third song,well that would be the third track on the L.P. so cue the record arm,now that lifts the record arm up, carefully move the arm past the first two tracks and just before the third, let down the cue lever slowly. Sometimes I get the end of track two ,but that's ok by me.

    Only issue I would take with this is the idea vinyl goes up in value is kind of like saying used cars go up in value. True if your talking about a 1965 Corvette, but not for most. Just think of the bins at your local shop ( not wall records) the bins are mostly filled with records that went down in value?!?

    • @authenticapparel9616
      @authenticapparel9616 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A big reason for that is the difference between modern vinyl and old vinyl. In most cases, modern vinyl pressings are pressed in limited quantities. Where as the records in bins you speak of are old records that were pressed in the millions, back when there was no internet and literally the only way you could listen to music was to purchase a physical copy.

      @@Shawn_the_GREAT I mean as a general rule yea I agree with you, but there's a lot of variables to it. Will you see the records of the Lana Del Rey's and Harry Styles of the world in dollar bins? Yea probably, a great deal of those records are being bought by 15 year old's who won't stick with vinyl records for the long haul. They are helping to propel this vinyl boom we are in but it's just a passing phase for them. But the music scene I'm a part of, has never stopped pressing records. All through the 90's and 2000's records were being pressed. Not everyone was pressing their music to vinyl, but the ones that did sold. And they are generally pressed in quantities of 300, 500, or 1000. I have never once seen any of these records in my local stores bins.

      @@authenticapparel9616 I was a radio DJ and had friends that owned punk/indie clubs in the 90s, so I am well aware of what you are saying. There ARE tons of variables, the biggest IMO is that people that are in love with collecting records are not able to remove that emotional connection and analyze the value as a whole. As far as "Record prices go up" or any grab-all generic financial/economic declarations. Certainly the idea of "buy records because theyll be worth more" is a sure tell of somebody pretty new to records, or "vinyl" or as the kids call it these days.

      @@Shawn_the_GREAT Actually I think we agree a lot more then disagree. Personally I never bought a record to flip or because I thought prices would go up. If they happen to increase in price, great. If not, no skin off my back. 99 percent of my collection is also on "boring" black vinyl, because the music in the grooves are what matters to me, not the color of the disc. That's what grinds my gears about a lot of new collectors, they are more interested in the color of the record then the music. These kinds of people I also don't think will last long term. But that's an argument for a different day!

    Vinyl doesn't necessarily deteriorate over time. Yesterday I played Kulu Se Mama by John Coltrane. I bought the record used 50 years ago. It plays perfect! Sounds as good today as it did when it was made. No surface noise at all. No scratches etc... I just played the record. Never mishandled it. I don't think I have ever even cleaned it! Just took care of it.
    Maybe they just had fantastic vinyl back in 1967, I don't know, but records can seem to last a lifetime.
    On the other hand, I have bought brand new records that do have surface noise and other issues! That can be very frustrating.

      Vinyl definitely deteriorates over time! Sometimes it's really really slow and can't be picked up by human ears/eyes, but as it is a physical media it will slowly deteriorate by just being an object in this world & being played over the years. is it a big deal? No, not really... just a con compared to online digital media which will always remain the same. Like you said, with most records it's hard to tell the difference over a lifetime, unless a record is REALLY not taken care of which is a different story.
      Also like I said in the video I don't really mind surface noise but some might. Depends on the listener, so I just wanted to mention it. That's weird that some brand new records had significant surface noise already!!
