    She Walks in Beauty
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: William L. Stuart (as William Stuart)
    Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Release Date: 22 September 1963 USA
    Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
    The fifth season of Bonanza commenced on September 22, 1963 with the episode titled "She Walks in Beauty." Gena Rowlands guest-stars as Ragan Miller, whose ravishing good looks have brought her nothing but misery and disastrous romantic relationships. Despising all men, she merely uses them to get what she really wants out of life. Ragan's arrival in Virginia City immediately sows the seeds of jealousy between brothers Hoss and Adam Cartwright, culminating in a bloody fistic brawl. Jeanne Cooper costars as Ragan's older sister Emilia. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
    "Season five of Bonanza began with this tale of two sisters. Jeanne Cooper is not thrilled with the prospect of younger sister Gena Rowlands coming home to Virginia City. Rowlands is a notorious flirt who uses and disposes of men as it suits her. Kind of like Scarlett O'Hara without the southern accent and the roots of Tara.
    But Dan Blocker is smitten with her. And as we know Hoss Cartwright is a good hearted soul who only sees the good in people. But Pernell Roberts is a more worldly person and he was recently in San Francisco where he heard tales of Rowlands and her men.
    This leads to a split in the Cartwright family, but how it is all resolved is for you to see the story.
    It's a nicely written story with both Cooper and Rowlands and Blocker and Roberts of the regulars dominating the story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
    "Unbeknownst to him, Hoss Cartwright has fallen in love at first sight with a woman of ill-repute (played in an extremely polite manner by Gena Rowlands) who is visiting her sister from racy San Francisco. This being 1963, the writers can't use the words 'jezebel' or 'prostitute', but the point is made clear when Adam Cartwright is seduced by man-hungry Gena right in her sister's front yard! The crux of the story however is a bit outdated, that a woman with a bad reputation is much like a leopard--she could never change her spots. Rowlands gets a good lecturing by Ben Cartwright--we even get to see the Cartwright brothers come to blows (minus Little Joe, who spends this entire episode hovering in the background). I'm not sure why the "Bonanza" stories couldn't feature each of the main characters equally when it came to tales of family conflict, but it seems the lead parts were divvied up week by week. This fifth season of the show was strong on episodes featuring Dan Blocker's Hoss prominently, and here he gets to utilize a colorful range: lovestruck rancher, clumsy gentleman caller, jealous boyfriend, hurt and angry brother. It's a triumph for both Blocker and Hoss, as we see a loyal and dedicated side to the big guy when it comes to matters of the heart (he even agrees to leaving his precious Ponderosa if his lady-love wants a life in the city). The film-stock used on "Bonanza" was terrific, as the colors just pop off the screen, and Rowlands (in an off-the-shoulder, Lily Langtree-styled party dress) has never looked so dreamy. Blocker, too, looks a might handsome, and his devotion to her is exceptionally heartfelt for a weekly western television program." Written by moonspinner55 on IMDb.com

      Gena, aging some, with an aging james Garner acted in the 2002(?) love story that was one of the rare great films, in these times when Hollywood is virtually no more. The young Rachel McAdams endeared millions to her, she playing wonderfully in last 20 years in some other fine films. Darn it, the name of film simply slipped away...showing my aging! (Look up "Rachel McAdam's" name and her film w/Garner & Gena Rowlands.

    When I was a little girl, this episode came on tv. All I could remember of it was the part where she got off the stage wearing the veil and Hoss says something about 'must be ugly as a mud fence'. or like that. lol I wanted to see it again as an adult to see what the episode was about. A reflection of the times. Can one forgive and forget, and start over. Can one change one's nature. I like how Ragan ran out to the wilderness to get a way from her citified, San Francisco ways and reputation. We never get to now what that "reputation" is/was only inferences. Was she just a flirt with men, a paid escort, a "party girl," a piece of furniture, a nymphomaniac. Did she realize she was wasting away for nought..... and that she did want someone to "grow old together"--- as Hoss said. The problem for her is could SHE change and accept country-life rather than city-life. Hoss is a Gentle Giant, naive, forgiving, forgetting, and loving. Adam is more reserved and analytical. Even when Hoss sees Adam kissing Ragan, he sort of harrumphs it. That he IS WILLING to go on. Good script with the two sister bickering back and forth: how their father favored the older over the younger, et. al. Ah, still a parental problem even now. Good script, acting, and theme: Forgive and Forget, and go on.

    According to the description of the plot in this episode, this was broadcast in SEPTEMBER 1963 and it's the beginning of the 5th season. Simple math tells you that if you subtract 5 from 63, you get 58. Therefore, the first season started in September 1958- not September 1959. The 14th and last season started in September 1972 and ended in May 1973.

      Season 5 minus Season 1 (5-1) = 4. So September 1963 - 4 years = September 1959, when Bonanza started. Another way to think of it is that there's been 4 seasons plus 1 episode, so at this point Bonanza had been going for 4 years. S1 59-60, S2 60-61, S3 61-62, S4 62-63 S5 63-64.

      Just explaining that you don't subtract 5. You subtract 4, because at the beginning of Season 5, you've only had 4 seasons so far. Think of it this way, on the 1st of May (the 5th month, the same as having the 5th season), how many months of the year have you had so far? 4 (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr) plus 1 day, not 5. So that's why working backwards we know Bonanza started in 1959, which it did, not 1958. Anyway, none of it matters, just continue to enjoy watching the episodes as we all do. Have a great day!

    I can understand appreciation for the characters, the themes, and the story lines of this program. I don't have any disagreement with viewers who enjoy these re-plays. I am, however, a person who notices details. I appreciate attention to detail in the areas of scenery and costumes, and I do have a problem with the 1960s style shoes on the feet of the leading lady of this episode. The actresses who pass by as the brothers load their wagon are wearing the laced, ankle -height boots of this era. The lady stepping out of the stage coach is wearing the high-heeled, extremely pointed dress shoes of the early to mid 1960s. Could be the director and the costume department wanted to show her ankles...to provide a rationale for the interest of the brothers. I think it looks strange. The decision concerning the footwear for her costume was off by about 90 years, if this is all supposed to be happening in the 1870s.

    • @CarinRutherfordCreel
      @CarinRutherfordCreel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Different types of women (saloon girls, young unmarried girls, and wives) wore different types of shoes, and she was possibly a “soiled dove” and saloon girl from the larger city, San Francisco, where fashion was also more modern, which possibly could explain the pointed heels for this timeline, however, perhaps they should have used a more appropriate shoe for the timeline, but I believe they used this particular shoe to introduce her as the type of woman she was to portray in this episode.

    • @ceceliaclarke9147
      @ceceliaclarke9147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@CarinRutherfordCreel I am not going to agree that costuming for women was a strong point of the directors of this program. I do understand that viewers have appreciated these episodes for the themes, stories, and characters. It is probably true that very few viewers care about accuracy concerning 19th century dresses, shoes and accessories. I happen to be a person who notices. 19th century women wore low-heeled slippers for dances and special occasions. From the mid 19th century to the first decade of the 20th they wore ankle height boots for travel and for appearances during the day. This is just fact. This includes saloon girls and women on up the scale. No woman had access to severely pointed shoes with stilletto heels until the 1950s. These had not been designed. They did not exist. The quality of 19th century footwear probably differed, with only the wealthiest women ever wearing beautiful kid boots. If you look at pictures, including late 19th century photographs, you will see that the basic design was the same for everyone. Women wore lace up, ankle height boots.
      I would not have agreed with policies for dressing actresses in anachronistic costumes, just for the purpose of signaling the nature of the character. Acting and writing should explain the character. Viewers with memories of Michael Landon's appearances on talk shows remember that even he had problems with the anachronisms present in episodes of Bonanza. Whatever a viewer might think concerning the program which he directed, it's noticeable that he insisted on accuracy in the area of 19th century costumes. While I must say that I would find re-plays of those "Prairie" episodes absolutely unwatchable, I would give Michael Landon credit for his concern with accuracy. Glaring inaccuracies detract from characterizations, in my opinion This is all that I'm going to say. Thank you for your comment.

    • @yougetagoldstar
      @yougetagoldstar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree that they are out of place. If I directed this, and I knew that scene wouldn't be possible without using stiletto heels, I would have found another way for the woman to get the Cartwright's attention. Early on I noticed the shoes of the saloon girls and I asked myself, "Did those shoes exist back then?" But, as you mentioned, you can understand the appreciation for characters, themes, and storylines. I appreciate those elements so much that I just shrugged off the inaccuracy. But, yeah I noticed that as well.

    • @ceceliaclarke9147
      @ceceliaclarke9147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@yougetagoldstar thank you for your comment. This program was so tightly scripted, and so carefully cast, directed, and produced that it seems likely that the costuming of the women reflects the producers' understanding of prevailing(1960s) attitudes concerning women. The other glaring costume mistake of this program concerns the exposure of the top half of breasts, and not just in the saloon scenes. Real women of the 1860s, visiting in houses and appearing out in public, were buttoned and lace-collared up to their chins. Producers and directors of this show probably knew this. They just had their ideas for keeping a television audience interested. The costuming of the male principals is also incorrect, as they are always wearing belts at a level not considered to be correct for men until the 1940s. Mid 19th century pants were more high waisted, and in general they were kept up high with suspenders. The costumer's use of belts, further down on the waist, was probably for the purpose of helping these actors to look more attractive to 1960s viewers. From the point of view of a person watching re-plays in the 21st century, this is all really too bad, because this program had some definite strengths, in the areas of casting, direction and acting. 1960s fashion trends injected into so many of the scenes, distract from stories and scenes which are otherwise very intense and interesting. We can see now that this was an interesting program, even without all of that anachronistic breast tissue on display. High heeled shoes are just distractions from some fine writing and acting.
      It is interesting, viewing these mid-20th century episodes in the 21st century. And I have enjoyed the comments, with each replay. There seems to be more appreciation, in our time now, for the character of Adam, and for the actor who played this part. I believe it would be correct to say that back in the 1960s Michael Landon was generally considered to be the star of stars, and the most important actor of this series. It is easier to see now that Adam was a fascinating character. He was a philosopher and a gunman...he had the mind of an engineer and the knowledge of a self-taught lawyer. He was the most like his father, of the three, and was also the son who was willing to express disagreement with his father. The actor who played this part made his character believable. In terms of acting, he out-shone the other four principals. Michael Landon seems a bit overwhelmed, and maybe out-classed, in the scenes in which they appear together. Producers who schemed and manipulated to hold onto Pernell Roberts knew what they were doing. He was holding this series together. Thank you for your very interesting comment.

      Bonanza,which I love, like the original Star Trek was definitely about pandering to the male gaze. That's part of why I love both shows, the beauty of the women and the styles.
