Nice video, very helpful, I just went through the procedure and all seems fine. One unexpected thing however I encountered was that for some reason the mechanism that catches the pins of the door handle and pulls it in - when you push up on the black metal release blade - had already "sprung", maybe while taking the old handle out, or maybe because once I plugged in the handle it started to lock/unlock as I was touching it. Anyway, staring at it for a while I realized I had to rotate/move the catch toward the outside of the door, just with the screwdriver, so as to "reset the trap". Then the handle's pins went into their designated position and pushing up on the release blade made the whole thing click and pull the handle in place as shown in the video. Had me sweating for a moment though, dreading the trip to the dealership with that sheepish look on my face...
Just wanted to say thanks this helped me as well. And I actually found out the cause, well at least for me. If you just push the handle towards the rear to remove it instead of pull and push then it won't pull the mechanism with it.

My gotcha. .. after removing the keylock, I did not notice the plastic part with the hex screw had moved back into the door about 1/4 of an inch. I could not get the light to sit flush. Nobody in the comments has ever mentioned this. It wasn't until I took the other door handle cap off did I notice the 1/4" difference between the two sides. With a bit of muscle, I got it back in place.
Helpful tip. If you accidentally push in the catch that holds the handle in before the new handle is seated, all you have to do is reach in and reset it with your finger...super easy
E82 Differences/Notes: 1. The lock on the left door needs to be removed. Otherwise, actuator is essentially locked in place. Start by removing the plastic seal shown at 7:12 in this video. Remove the hidden retaining bolt using a hex bit. The lock pulls right out of the door exterior. Reinstalling is straightforward. 2. Simply loosening the rear (1 top & 2 bottom) bolts on the regulator allows the rail to be moved enough so the actuator could be removed. That is, you do not need to completely dislocate/unmount the rear of the regulator. 3.There were no wires attached to the rear of the actuator. Don't worry about it. It's just different from the example in this video. 4. Be careful when removing the plastic cable retainer. I shattered the bottom part of the retainer by squeezing the bottom too hard. Fortunately for me, there was enough plastic that I did not need to replace the cable. --- Thank you, Buddy! This video was very helpful.
If you take out the handle and notice the thick matte silver metal carrier that pulls it back in during reinstall is too far back and not coming forward and pulling in the door handle when you push up on the thin shiny metal tab, it's because the metal tab didn't catch it so it went too far back. So grab an Allen key and use the short end to hook the thick matte silver carrier and pull it outward. You'll hear/feel the thin shiny metal tab grab it and hold it in place. Then just reinstall as shown in the video by positioning the handle and pushing up on the thin metal tab.
On my X6, which almost looks identical, , I think just putting the lock devise back in will trip that little lever at the same time, pulling the handle flush.
Thank you for this trick. I will note that my trap piece / trigger piece would not catch without me holding a screw driver under it until I pulled the back part forward. Even then, it would trip with the littlest touch. It took many tries to get it to stay in place so I could put the door handle back on. Much cursing.
There is a heavy white cable BLOCKING the passage way on my 2012 X5 Diesel. The mushroom-like plunger in the lock continues to hit that and will NOT let it get past. Any help would greatly be appreciated
@@henningpangels6208 Took of my pannel to, I just thought it was gonna be tucked in between the door pannel and the actual sheet metal but I was able to fish it with finesse. Can't believe dealer thought my handle wasn't working because I had window tint and it was just not plugged all along. I wonder how it happened. Car was only a 2011 335is with like 80k miles
@@JackRR15 Had to fish the wire too, wasn't too bad. Window tint my a$$... dealers lie. Was the comfort access not working when you got the car (used, I presume)? If so, the previous owner might have had the same problem I did - handle went bad, and started draining the battery, not terribly but I didn't like it. So I had the dealer disconnect the wire from the bad handle until I could figure out how to fix it myself. Maybe your previous owner just left it that way for you... or did the handle just start working once you plugged in the wire??
@@henningpangels6208 Yeah passenger comfort access only wasn't working. Dealer got my coded with a new key for free since car only came with one and that's when they noticed that. Yes when I plugged it back in everything has been working fine for the last 2 months. It's even winter here so there is -20c temps and battery has been fine. Actually now that I recall, my passenger handle kinda worked only 2 times to unlock the car, I had to pull on it at the same time which could explain the wire being loose then falling or something. Oh well mystery! I was ready to spend 200$ on a handle lol. I originally wanted to swap handles to make sure my issue was the actual handle. Which is why I started taking it off. Free repair!
Your torch is at the wrong angle for us to see what you are pushing up. You should have used the flash light on your phone also. Otherwise this is a good video.

So grab an Allen key and use the short end to hook the thick matte silver carrier and pull it outward. You'll hear/feel the thin shiny metal tab grab it and hold it in place. Then just reinstall as shown in the video by positioning the handle and pushing up on the thin metal tab.

Comfort access cable is inside the door. Any tips to pull it out? I was looking why my handle wasn't working and it seems it wasn't plugged in.
I had the same problem, had to remove the inside door panel, which was actually not too bad - found a video here on youtube that showed how to do it
