    I have bad news: This spider isn't a _Nephila sp._ or _Trichonephila sp._ , it is an _Argiope sp._ and it won't get much larger than that. It may very well be a sub-adult or even adult female. You've been scammed. :(

      It looks similar to _Argiope levii_ or _Argiope aemula_ but I can't determine the species for sure as we don't know where it was collected from. Also I don't know which species are more commonly available on the trade so I can't really say which species it's most likely to be. Perhaps seeking the opinion of someone who is familiar with the trade of _Argiope spp._ or orb-weavers in general would be helpful. There are currently 88 species within the genus _Argiope_ and I'm not going through all of them. :D

  • @Turtlesism
    @Turtlesism 2 ปีที่แล้ว +142

    The shaking back and forth is to dislodge unwanted guests that might be on the web and to prevent the prey from getting any footing/hold to escape while it is being turned into dinner. It also helps to disguise where the spider is to potential predators while it's busy trying to capture something as well.

    • @seanrallis6714
      @seanrallis6714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Actually, while that IS in fact one of the theories, the more popular one is that they do it to warn creatures away from the web. Things like deer, dogs, and humans.
      But honestly, we still aren't entirely sure exactly why they do it.

    • @robertsivak8887
      @robertsivak8887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm with Sean on this one, but only because I've tested it. They bounce their web as a warning to make themselves look more threatening. I had one beside my front door and it wouldn't start til it noticed me staring at it for too long, food or not.

    • @phumbleina
      @phumbleina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I read that they bounce in order to appear larger in order to warn any possible threat away. We have them all summer in my yard by the hundreds, and this seems to match the information.

    • @Turtlesism
      @Turtlesism 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phumbleina You are so lucky! I love these spiders, but I did notice towards recent times that their numbers - particularly golden orb weavers - had seemed to plummet in the area I was living in. When I first came to Australia in 2011, they were everywhere but by the time I left this year, I remember seeing far less of them and finding them rather uncommon compared to when I arrived.

      Here in the US North East we have a species of garden spider, argiope, that has a couple unique habits. They weave a unique pattern inntheur web that reflects UV light tinatteact insects, but it also acts to hide the spider from predators. They will also shake their web, supposedly for 2 reasons, to deter predators, but also to alert non prey or predators of their presence. Very similar to the species in this video, but not as big.

  • @N7Tigger
    @N7Tigger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I've seen people keep them without an enclosure at all. They hang a large wooden ring on a string from the ceiling and it builds a web in it and just stays there. Just throw pray items in it's web and you have a free range spider.

    As others have said, this is actually a species of Argiope, not Nephila.
    However, don't despair! Argiopes are awesome spiders. They build beautiful webs and are a joy to watch. They like it a little dry, so I would suggest turning down your misting system a bit. Feeding them is actually a bit easier than you made it out to be... their webs are quite strong, I often feed the ones around my home but simple tossing insects at the web. They get caught easily and Argiopes are quick to attack and subdue them

    • @bigfoxki
      @bigfoxki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More awesome IMHO, I saw one similar in Taiwan with an adult female Nephila very close to it, the Argiope was actaully a lot bigger. I have seen a lot of Nephila so I know how big they can get, and the Argiope's legs were a lot thinker.
      The huge white X pattern with it sitting in the center was terrifying.
      I wish I had a camera back then, but it was in the era of cellphone only for calling, still can't believe it can grow that large.

      @@bloodmoney88 No. By definition, venom is a toxin that must be injected into the body in order to do its job. Poison must be injested. Venom is not typically poisonous, which is why people can drink it without any effects. If you are bitten by a spider or a venomous snake, you have not been poisoned. If, however, you eat the wrong part of a puffer fish, or someone puts arsenic in your food, then you have been poisoned.

  • @Turtlesism

    These spiders were the greatest part of living in Australia. I found one that had almost 5" legspan and was unbelievably beautiful black/gold. One thing I learned quickly while photographing in the bushes was not to accidentally walk into the web. The main strands are essentially like walking into nylon and can be damn near unbreakable. Not to mention the spider throws a complete fit at the intrusion and shakes the web very violently - so you'll have a spider butt smacking in your face while you're trying to remove the incredibly sticky silk. I'm going to miss them a lot now that I've moved back home to New Zealand, where we don't have any spiders nearly as impressive.
    The biggest web I saw from one of these was around 5' long and went 7' from top to bottom. The spider in the middle was massive, but she was not happy for photographs and stayed well out of my reach (as I am, sadly, not 7' tall).
    Edit: Also they are easy to keep in captivity. You need to mist the web now and again for them to get water. Also don't stress the spider out by removing their meals corpses if you see it leaving a lot of dead stuff behind the web. It's normal for many Golden Orb weavers to do that and they're intentionally doing it.

    The Scheflera is getting burned from the light as the waterdroplets stay on the leaf are magnifying the streinght. It's also probably being over watered by sitting right under the nozzle. Roots need oxygen to thrive, otherwise the plant suffocates. I would suggest a peace lily (Spathiphyllum lynise) in that spot. Cheap to get from any hardware store or garden center and it likes it wet 😏

    • @louibeans
      @louibeans 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey there! Waterdroplets magnifying the light and causing burns on leaves is a common myth. If the plant is burning, the light is simply too strong. You're right about the roots though and a possibel issue with water clogging.

    • @Psychodeathification
      @Psychodeathification 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi. I work with plants my whole life, and to me it seems that Petko is having a pest problem, looks like the Thrips are damaging the leafs. Aerial roots on Schefflera arboricola are normal and it actually can thrive in very wet, humid but hot conditions. The light is not a problem in this case. You can see the Thrip damage especially on the Tradescantia zanonia plant.

    • @JELLYSKA
      @JELLYSKA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thirps are the bain of my existence!!! It could be that you are both right. I'm always a bit careful to suggest pest damage as when I have it, its usually all over the place. In Petkos case it would be difficult to treat it too, since there is already a resident in that enclosure 🤔

      The shape of the ophistosoma (abdomen) resembles that of an _Argiope lobata_ , but I've never seen a reliable record of any _A. lobata_ with such ophistosomal colouration. The reason why it didn't bother to remake its web is probably because you just fed it so it doesn't necessarily need to make a new one until it gets hungry again. I doubt if it will wait that long but it probably just wants to digest it's food right now.

I took it outside and released the next day where it could catch bugs. A few years ago I had one in my porch. She stayed there all summer and left me with an egg sac. I didn't see any hatch but I'm hopeful some did.
    They shake the web when they feel threatened. It makes it harder for a predator to perceive them. They will get used to you eventually. My porch spider did that at first but it settled down. Also I have heard that they build their web at an angle to the breeze to maximize the chance that an insect will get caught in it.

      yes true most likely the Zigzag orb weaver (Argiope cf. lobata or levii), he couldn´t get a golden orb weaver, but both are orb weavers

      It is an _Argiope sp._ and it won't get much larger nor will it live much longer unfortunately. :(

      It's not St Andrews cross spider, they have stripes on their back and are called cross spider as they weave a magnificent cross into their web to make their legs appear larger (probably to deter becoming a meal to other spiders). It's actually st Andrew's cross spider that transformed my arachnophobia to curiousity and I created a wonderful breeding ground for them. They are such fun spiders, and I'm thinking about buying a bunch of them and seeing if I can establish then on my balcony garden. I laughed when I seen them for sale, I had no idea the gold mine I used to have in my yard. Also many golden orbs too which was awesome and even funnier when someone went through their webs. I used to live in Brisbane, Queensland Australia, now on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia

      @@pamelahardy2907 Yeah I know it's not a St Andrews cross spider, but being unfamiliar with this Spider (he got it from Germany?) it's what it reminded me of - hence the Agriope species as a group to look at.
      Definitely not a golden orb weaver that's for sure!

    I’m not 100 percent sure but i think they shake because it throws off potential predators while they wrap there food makes it harder to lock on.

    That is a very pretty new inhabitant to the Dark Den. Hope she will settle in nicely!
    I also hated it when I got clothes as a kid... My grandparents on my father's side of the family always got me cheap, knock-off brand stuff from Hungary... I barely wore any of that awful stuff 😅

    It’s weird watching this after the news about felix. Seeing him dangle like that it’s easy now to see the early warning signs but at the time you’d just think he was messing about or something.
    Hope he does ok.

    I'm terribly arachnophobic, but I love this spider. They're very rare around where I live, and I think of them as good luck.
