When you think of Christian Bale in movies -- what do you visualize? An overweight Vice President? A future war fighter against rebellious machines? A 120 pound insomniac? A tough as nails boxing trainer? Or perhaps Batman. Yeah, we all know you definitely thought of Batman. While Batman may be Christian Bale’s most iconic role, the method actor has run the gauntlet when it comes to movie acting choices. But just how far does he go for these roles? Christian Bale: A giant middle finger to anyone that’s ever struggled with their weight.
Ye dude, i'm trying my entire life to gain weight and he just does it in a blink of an eye.. Frustrating xD
Trying to lose weight and I’m thinking if I could afford to hire a personal trainer and work out three hours a day I would be a size 6
What he does isn't healthy. Yes you can gain weight by pounding doughnuts but what's that doing to your blood sugar ? (diabetes ) Sure you can starve yourself but you'll pay a systematic price (heart, kidneys etc.) not to mention malnutrition and energy loss. (Look into the issues associated with stomach reductions ) He is a phenomenal actor but he really is messing up his body

Yeah. It's just a shame that the films rarely if ever match his dedication in terms of quality. The Machinist is not a bad film, but it wasn't worth nearly dying for.
Hoze 123 for real

And this is why Christian Bale is by far my favorite actor. He puts his body, heart, and soul into his roles, and it is truly amazing

Yea, but it might "change" him way too prematurely! Its quite bad for the body!
He's a shapeshifter.
To bad he can’t atleast act a nice personality in real life a friend of mine met him irl and said he’s a dick can’t help but think that’s the toll method acting does to you, you loose yourself and become a kind of scitsophrenic embodying all the charecters you’ve played

For Christian Bale, drastically changing his physical appearance is super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Eeww, dude!
"is going from 120 pounds to batman going to be hard?" "no actually it'll be super easy, barely an inconvenience"
We see Christian Bale and his amazing art... We are amazed by his body transformations on the outside, but believe me, his insides, his heart is taking a beating. This constant metamorphosis has side effects.
Pretty drastic ones I imagine
Yeah. I’m surprised he’s even still alive.
He’s also 44 years old. Time in such of a profession fades with the body as it ages. In his 20s’ and early 30s’, his metabolic rate was high enough to handle the physical stress. As he pushed into his late 30s’ and early 40s’, his body’s metabolic fluctuations caused a major stutter in that rate. His body’s slowing down, so he probably needs to start slowing down.
@@MetallicaKing48 i feel like he will want to keep on doing it the way he has always done it or just quit. He's a hardcore actor
Indeed, it could be quite bad for him!
Christian Bale's acting technique is astouding and his intuition serves him extremely well. Gaining and losing weight is the absolute least interesting thing he does as an actor.
Well said! This video almost entirely distilled his work down to a workout regime...
Yeah right. He's my favourite actor, but I don't know why people highlight his physical transformations rather than appreciating his acting performances. His performances are great and he's very versatile, but that's mainly because of his acting and not his transformations.
Dio Falkner this video has nothing to do with his method acting skills. It has to do with his character research.
Imagine if Heath Ledger lived and they cast Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in the third Dark Knight movie. Three great method actors together, each the best at their iconic roles. Not to mention Tom Hardy, also a notable method actor.
Heath Ledger was amazing, but I really don't think they would make the third movie about him again even if Heath were still around. Nolan wanted to tell a new, different story with each movie -- there's no point in doing another Joker thing. And honestly, there's no topping The Dark Knight.
Living Myth actually Nolan wanted joker in the third movie with Bane. But ofc ledger died. He had a big plan for it but scrapped it
None of those performers are method actors. Ledger watched his takes back on camera so he could adjus, that is literally antithetical to method acting. Tom Hardy isnt even vaguely a method actor.
FarawayTreeVideos did you just say Christian bale and heath ledger aren’t method actors??
@@fromomelastocarcosa3575 heath ledger put him self near dangerous chemicals and kept the face paint on and did it him self so yeah he kind of was a method actor

That's a quality movie. Batman vs Wolverine and not to mention the presence of Nikola Tesla and an unfit Andy Serkis pre-Avengers
BOWIE!!!
I think he means the character. Bale's character in The Prestige is a far more normal and a far lighter person than Trevor Reznik and Batman for example. The movie itself is dark, but the character isn't so much.
Spartan057J You think so? I thought his character in The Prestige was still quite dark 🤔. You may be right, though. Maybe it’s just the movie.

A massively underrated Bale film is Harsh Times. If you haven't seen it highly recommend.
yes criminally underrated !
He is one of the most underrated actors anywhere. Many don’t even recognize him in some movie because of him much he changes.
Empire of the sun has always been the fondest of memories from my childhood as I'm a film student at heart
To say the very least I am a die hard Christian Bale fanboy
I am somewhat DISAPPOINTED that "Harsh Times" is not mentioned in this video as it is an incredible performance from Bale
He completely immerses himself in every role
Which I appreciate and show my appreciation by watching every one of his movies
Bale wasn’t “physically similar” during Rescue Dawn. Dude got almost as thin as he did during The Machinist...
Aaron Lancaster yeah but what they did was they filmed the skinny scenes first and filmed the scenes before he went to Vietnam afterward
+A really high person That's what De Niro did for Raging Bull as well. First he got himself into the best shape of his life, and then he went to Italy and got obese.

Christian Bale's performances are all brilliant. It's ridiculous that he only won one Oscar for a minor role. He deserves many more; at least as many as Daniel Day-Lewis.
If he would have offered the role of Joker in Dark Knight, he would have nailed it.

Bale is my favorite actor ever. Love that mans work. His performance in Hostiles is extremely underrated too.
Christian Bale as Dicky Eklund is one of the greatest performances in cinema. If you’ve seen footage of the real Dick Eklund, it becomes even more apparent how much Bale nailed that role.
This is what makes Christian Bale one of my favorite actors of all time; he really goes above and beyond for his roles
Oh my God. He is unrecognisable. Even without much makeup for the film.
I saw three films with Bale as the lead and I thought he looked familiar but I didn’t know that he was the same guy. It was a jaw dropping discovery.
Bale is one of my favorite actors of all time
And we really -really- don't care.
Method acting is not just about weight loss, and it looks to be a fantastic approach to role playing indeed.
Christian Bale is the best actor in Hollywood today. Chane my mind.

Christian bale is on the level of Daniel Day Lewis when it comes to method acting and he is the best actor of his generation.
@@dawsondjodvorj2408 on the level of daniel day lewis?! LOL. Changing weight dosen't make him a good method actor as DDL. And he can't even touch joaquin, so did joaquin change his weight either. "I'm on the verge of tears by the time we arrive at Espace, since I'm positive we won't have a decent table. But we do, and relief washes over me in an awesome wave."
For the last question, yes, method acting is far better than standard acting. Method acting is the ultimate form of acting because you are literally becoming a whole new person. Daniel Day Lewis once said that sometimes it takes him weeks to get back to his true self once he's done filming. Honestly, I always wondered why all actors aren't method actors. It's really the only kind of true acting. I don't see the point of being the same character every movie but just have different lines
Well done both Christian Bale with movies like Empire of the Sun to Batman the Machinist, so very good to his next Vice and you also Screen rant! Keep up the good work! Both of you :)
Honestly Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun was just amazing, I love that film and I just can't imagine how he was that skilled even as a child. amazing!
Sheer willpower. hats off to Christian Bale. The Man indeed is a human chameleon.
"Ima dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude"
Man if Christian Bale was a UFC fighter he would be able to fight in 8 different weight classes!
Ever since the Fighter I think he's one of the greatest actor's of all time.
This is why he’s one of my all time favourite actors. You can tell he loves acting to the max.
The best actor of all Time
HotasChilli there is no such thing.
The best joke of all time
Acting is an artform and a way to express yourself,
therefore I feel like it only makes sense that Christian Baile would get so emotionally attached. I feel like he’s been using his own emotions, and altered them in to the emotions of the character.
He hasn’t only “acted” and mimicked the emotions, he has actually felt them and expressed them through his own personal feelings.
Now that’s high class acting.
This is why he's one of my favorite actors, he is so dedicated.
Every time I watch The Machinist, I feel restless. Like as if I needed eat. I still feel strange thinking of how someone voluntarily lost that much weight.
Thank you so much for not spoiling The Prestige! I want to see it so badly!
Another very underrated performance that required some weight cutting and mental turmoil was Werner Herzog's 'Rescue Dawn', which I believe he filmed immediately after 'Batman Begins'
fascinating dedication.
I used to dislike Christian Bale, but then seeing him in American Psycho, Batman, The Prestige and others just makes me realize Christian Bale is pretty great
Almost as good as Steve Guttenberg. Almost.
I think I mainly disliked him for what he did on the set of The Dark Knight (Rises) where he was a complete dick to the crew. But I can’t hate the guy for 1 thing that he’s done
Man I dont break character until I finish the DVD commentary!

Christian Bale IS The Batman!
He doesn't get the credit he deserves.
I just wish we could find a more accurate term for the type of acting done by Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, and so on and so forth. Sure, maybe they're method actors, but method acting isn't the idea of being a character through the entire production. Method acting is a set of tools used to create characters and stories, the biggest tools being improvisation and sense memory exercises. You use sense memory to bring yourself to an emotional state you've experienced in your life that can give you something similar to what the character you're portraying is feeling, so that it's lived life and not just "pretending". Improvisation is used as a tool beforehand, improvising on the scenes and situations you will later be playing word by word, so that you can get the feeling of what you might have said differently, or what feels most natural to you, in order to put more meaning and understanding behind the lines you'll be saying. Diving extremely deep into a character and staying there even while off camera is not the trademark of what method acting is about, and is in no way taught, or required, to and of a method actor.
Bale:
"It's not who I'm underneath, but what i do that defines me."
I feel badly for Bale he started as a child actor and was pressured to support his family at least that is what I've gathered from interviews. The Machinist is my favorite Bale performance.
My fav Bale role? Prestige. And not coincidentally jackmans too
This man is amazing
One of my favorite actors of All Time
I don’t normally comment on stuff, and while I appreciate the analysis and thought that went into this, I feel compelled to comment. Method acting is a widely misunderstood process due to tabloid stories and rumors around famous actors. What is being described in this video is not the actual “Method” practice. Do some research on Lee Strasberg, who could be considered the father of modern acting. He was inspired by the work of Stanislavsky, and from him we developed other acting techniques such as that of Stella Adler and Meisner. The Method is not transforming in the character by extreme physical or mental measures. It is not existing in the role off set. Sure, these actors including Bale have committed themselves fully, and done an immense about of research to prepare. But while these actors or the media may claim it is “Method acting,” it is not the Method created and coined by Lee Strasberg. Not to bash these actors, because I truly love their work, the extremes they go to are not healthy. As you discuss in the video, it takes an intense mental toll on the actors, that effects their lives. In some cases it results in unhealthy habits such as drug use, and that is most certainly not part of real Method acting. Again, I enjoyed the thought that went into this, but I highly suggest researching Strasberg and the real Method. It is an intense method of acting, true, but not like this. Sorry for the long post, and thanks to anyone who read the whole thing.
EDIT: I realize that this video reaches a very wide audience, which is why I felt the need to comment. I don’t want this to be a negative comment, but it is media like this that can spread the bad or extreme reputation Method acting gets.
THANK YOU! was thinking the same thing, you put it in to words.
the “method” was created and coined by Stanislavsky and the three popular modern day acting coaches Stella, meisner and Strasberg took what they learned from Stanislavsky and made their own interpretation of “the method” Stanislavsky was very miss understood and he even claims himself that he wasn’t going to live long enough for his true interpretation of the “true art of acting” to be understood the way it was meant to. He was way beyond his years and didn’t know how to put his thoughts down on paper
Devin Hill Ok, what exactly is this particular "method" exactly? You say CB is doing it wrong yet you do explain what he should do instead
This poor poor man his body must hurt terribly every day going through these super drastic changes all the time but I do appreciate and respect the dedication to your craft that’s very impressive
Sid Vicious I do watch his movies in theaters most of them at least
Bale is one of the best.
awesome video, it won me over when i see Bale, homer, ledger, shaun of the dead ref. My favorite Bale roles are TDK trilogy, equilibrium, reign of fire and ofcourse the prestigue, thats a master class, you could have also mentioned that 3;10 to yuma and he even did extra research for the film public enemies
EQUILIBRIUM!!!
yeessssssss!!!
The movie I first saw him in and fell in love with.
I'm glad he got help when he needed it. Method acting is incredibly straining from the look of it and I'm so glad Bale was able to get a hold of it. I hope his mind's okay as well.
Why is screenrant making decent content and not badly made and inaccurate top 10s?
Really well done Screen Rant. Sems very well researched and thought provoking
Sorry but method acting doesn't mean that you portray a charactet during the whole production. It means that you use your own emotions and experiences to portray a character.
Vasse Manousaridis not true. That is one form of “method acting”. That way is actually more unhealthy. Method acting has been turned into many things over the years since it was coined a term and practice by Stanislavsky (the acting teacher who invented “method acting”). The way screen rant explains it with Bale is he truly tries to live the life of his characters even when the camera isn’t rolling to fully engulf himself into the role. Daniel Day Lewis does the exact some thing. Lewis would spend month away from his family and normal life just to live as his character before starting filming. Heath ledger did the same thing. He left and stayed in a hotel for a month away from everyone to engulf himself into the joker. Yes some of yourself is always going to be in the role but just like he said in the video Bale didn’t want to see himself when he looked in the mirror he wanted to see his character he was portraying
@@devinhill9514 Yea, they all did that...still not method acting. Stanislavsky taught the method and that's what the method is. It really doesn't matter if you think "staying in character" is "method"...it's not. It's just what people who don't understand the craft like to call it.
Howard Roark to each their own brotha. Go ahead and tell Daniel day Lewis that while he’s holding his 3 Oscar’s
@@devinhill9514 I'm not sure you know what you're arguing for. DDL isn't method and he's said as much himself. He studied Stanislavsky when he was younger in school, said he appreciates it as a framework, but now he does his own thing. It's not method. He stays in character on and off the screen. That's not what method acting is. It's BECAUSE DDL isn't method that he has 3 oscars. Sounds like you think "method" is synonymous with "great". It isn't. DDL will happily tell you that his staying in character is not method acting.
Howard Roark I’m not trying to argue with anyone haha. I agree with all of you guys. Everyone thinks of things differently and everyone has their own “method” of doing things. I’m not trying to Argue about anything

But after your mentioning and showing the fact (Through pics) that it is actually Bale, again Total Mindblown!¡
And for me personally, Bale's performance in "The Machinist" will always be my personal favorite (Until I see what he does for his role in "Vice" first, of course 😉)

No one in the history of acting has done so much extreme physical transformation as Christian Bale. He's the KING of kings.
This inspired me to become an actor.

When I think of Batman, I think of Bale. 👍🏻
i’m actually friends with the kid from american hustle, irving rosenfeld’s son. he doesn’t remember the role that much but i think it’s pretty cool that he was in the movie
I still say that the most impressive method acting was Daniel Day-Lewis playing The Butcher in Gangs Of New York. If you've watched several other Daniel Day-Lewis movies, watched interviews with the actor, and watched Gangs Of New York several times, it might even be difficult to wrap your head around the fact that The Butcher is indeed Daniel Day-Lewis. The character is such an extreme opposite of the actor that it's a challenge to comprehend that they are the same person. Daniel Day-Lewis is such a calm, rational, and kind person, but The Butcher is so unbelievably vile and toxic that it borders on being cartoonish. Christian Bale and Heath Ledger are of course amazing, but Daniel Day-Lewis and his portrayal of The Butcher is the main reason I never get bored of watching Gangs Of New York. I despise the character so much that you end up wishing that somehow he suffers in the end more than he does. At the end of the movie you just want to say "See you next Tuesday jerk!" :D
please keep making videos like that ❤
“Batman has no limits.”
He is more dedicated to his work about body changing than anybody does in the field. If you want to dive in a character, you have to change your voice but also to your whole body to match that person's character. He is exceptional!!!. He need to get achievement award or Nobel prize or exceptional person award in the cinema field by the time he reaches 50. So, this is how he has to be respected.
