I thought Heidi had already started at vet uni and was there for a few months between terms. The fact that she has chosen to work hard at a hard job speaks volumes for her dedication to pursue a veterinary career. Fantastic young lady. Keep up the amazing forward thinking attitude and you'll go far.

Heidi is awesome. She should come up to visit us in the North Highlands and work at our vets for one of her work experience weeks. We have a goat farm down the road, and we have diary goats here as well as little Dexter cows.
I am only 4ft9 and used to milk Holsteins. I prefer my little miniature cows these days 🤣
Heidi is right about the goat vet network being needed. When we had 2 kids come down with poisoning last week, I spoke to a goat farmer in America and the goat farm down the road to get advice as well as having the vet come out. Between all of us we successfully got both kids through it... and figured out what had poisoned them (bought in haylage). It was an all woman gang who got the goats healthy. The American goat lady, goat farmer down the road, large animal vet and myself are all women. Women in agriculture are smashing it! 😀💙👍

Hi Tom a great q and a with Heidi. With regaudrds to the silage we use a thin cling film barrier sheet called silo stop. It goes on top of the silage and then see put the black sheet over that. We hardly get any spoilage as the sheet sucks down onto the grass sealing it in. Might be worth a look to try and help. Keep up the great content.

My Dad grew up on a farm.. not cattle, but growing/picking cotton, etc.. One of the major things he always taught me and my sisters was that making mistakes was OKAY, so long as you learned from them. If you learn something from your mistakes, then it was worth making the mistakes. He always grilled that into us through the years.

Get some clean soil and cover it completely next harvest, on top of the plastic, we have been doing that for years and if you do too you will be milking like a mad man in wintertime because all the air will be pushed out, the silage will never heat up and the cows will be loving it because it will taste so much better so you will get way more silage through your cows means more milk! Common knowledge in the netherlands and the average dutch milk cow produces over 8500 litres milk with 3,65 percent protein and 4,50 percent fat, mostly because off proper silo manegement

Wow what a great vid! I thought you both "smashed it!" It seem Heidi started in the cold Netherlands and is working her way down to the warmer climates! lol. Soon she should be in Spain lol.

You should put cling film layer under the plastic make a big distance also we use wood chip on top instead of tyres gives even pressure all over don't get any waste

No idea...only used the raised pit silo. Packed silage doed with mixed grain overtop for the winter, didn't usually have much down heavily by running the tractor back and forth overtop. Seed by spreading mixed grain overtop and letting sprout...some *would* mould after opening the seal to feed..and any that did mould was chucked to one side, then mixed to the manure pile later in the summer. Some have suggested inoculations of the animals, just in case...which I'd actually like to do..especially with the horses! Ruminants aren't so much of a concern as they *can* if necessary, vomit and/belch, horses generally can't. There are some who can, but generally, they can't, and that proves invariably fatal.
