Police threaten to arrest ‘openly Jewish’ man for walking near pro-Palestine protest

  • Scotland Yard are allowing no-go zones for Jews in London, a man has claimed, after officers threatened to arrest him for “antagonising” pro-Palestinian marchers.
Gideon Falter, head of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, was wearing a kippah skull cap when he was stopped by officers last Saturday in the Aldwych area while on a walk with friends after attending synagogue.
Mr Falter was walking along carrying a bag containing his prayer shawl when he came across a pro-Palestinian march.
In an exchange that was filmed and uploaded to social media, Mr Falter was told he would not be allowed to cross the road while the march was taking place because as a Jew his presence could create tensions among the marchers.

The elephant in the room is, Gideon knew what he was doing. He wanted to get up close and personal with the marchers. He then hoped they'd identify him as Jewish and attempt to attack him, physically and/or verbally. He wanted a disorder. He would then no doubt have renewed his call for the matches to be banned.
This sort of behaviour at marches is incredibly frustrating for the police. And it's precisely the reason so many officers are required, i.e., to keep rival factions apart. The police are damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

I think the issue is the principle that he's trying to cross the march, but is clearly Jewish from the cap (don't know what it's called) and is being told he can't. The assumption being that anyone else not easily identifiable as Jewish may have been allowed through normally. If he rocked up with an IDF flag draped over him fair enough, but he wasn't...
Though I don't know what happened before. In another video of the same incident the officer said he was previously "standing in the middle" or something like that - so not sure if he was actually trying to cross the road or not, or if his "standing in the middle" was recorded or not.

I think the police were well intentioned but poorly articulated their concerns. I'm not sure how they could better articulate their concerns though. They said they weren't accusing him or anything. They said they didn't want provocation from either side. They said they were worried about his safety. In a protest march keeping the peace and using common sense seems maybe reasonable. The police don't know the intentions of the nice Jewish chap or the random protesters. They just want to keep the peace and minimise the chances of harm or disruption to the peaceful nature of the protest.
If the guy happened to get into an argument with the protesters and it escalated either deliberately or accidentally from him or the protesters....there'd be a different outrage.
The story is political more than genuine I think.

In London On November 11 I was arrested for breach of the peace. It was for "antagonising" a masked gang by recording them at the Winston Churchill statue. I only recorded them briefly before they told me to stop and threatened me when I didn't. I verbally retaliated and was told by the police I was antagonising this group, besides the arguing, because I filming them on an historic protest day they chose to be involved in without their permission.
And looking at this, this is apparently the threshold for antagonising. How about use some resources to protect these people's basic freedom of expression. Police will often construe this as baby sitting, as if wanting to not capitulate to a mob on grounds of basic freedom of expression is being a trouble making baby. The mobs are taking advantage of the police's robotic thinking when it comes to individuals and it's fear of restricting group protest.
Show these mobs the police will not tolerate intolerance as blatant as this.

I don’t see why anyone would think that this man would be attacked when peaceful protests by extremely large groups (including many members of the jewish community) have been happening week after week after week for months without anyone being attacked
I also do not understand why his openly Jewishness would be an issue when the protest is against Zionism- a political ideology that enforces apartheid and is killing innocents. Openly jewish people are in the frontlines of these protests.

I was actually there on the march. It was very peaceful, unlike the propaganda press reporting, and was calling for a ceasefire to the war in Gaza! There were several jewish men with skull caps that freely walked past the marches, with no problem. When we got to Aldwych however, there was a counter protest, which resulted in the chanting getting louder and becoming more raucous (not violent!). It was at this point that this man wanted to cross the road!! That is, walk through a whole crowd of demonstrators! Why I wonder? This protest march got absolutely NO coverage by the main stream media despite it being peaceful, until this incident that somehow has grabbed the headlines!!
