    For me, what he is severely lacking in terms of the Premier League is confidence to carry a ball. He seems a bit nervous to take a ball forward at times when he can clearly do it with his ability.

    I don't think his performance last season was anything more than him missing pre-season and the beginning of the campaign due to injury. Players need time in the team, regardless of skillset. I have seen flashes of his quality, and I think his ability is staggering. I don't think Arteta was expecting him to be a starter last season, either. Fans often see a player get a cameo appearance and then freak out when they don't perform, not realizing that every player needs a bit of time to find a rhythm.

    Porto fan, he was good for us but you got him after 6 months of playing at a good level being a starter for us! Honestly, I think the problem is you got him too soon for him to make an immediate impact, just loan him to a club that starts him! Per example, you loan him back to us and he'd still be a starter for us and that's not because there's any difference between our teams, it's because you have Odegaard and we don't

    • @wildchild3862
      @wildchild3862 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@snaggiz thats a good point, ødegaard had to climb the ladder and proved himself 2 leagues before he came to arsenal. He really had to work for it, ive followed him since he played the domestic league and with him you can really see the physical and mental progression from year to year, its like every year he has always come back better and better. There are stories about him from his time in holland how extreme he was, working like a dog, always first in and last out. One of his team mates said he used to take the trim bike into the sauna and just sweat it out like a madman. Arteta commented on ødegaards mentality in an interview this summer, brutal is the term he used.
      Its some Norwegian mentality thing, haaland is the same, just extreme to the point of obsession. You can see how quickly both of them adapted to the premier league physically, you see the work rate in games. This training culture originated in some crazy state olympic training program for norwegian xc skiers. Those guys has the highest O2 uptake in world sports, they clean out the winter olympics every time winning 9/10 medals and this program has been transfered to other sports branches and produced dominant athletes such as ødegaard, haaland, the track running ingebrigtsen brothers who are currently smashing long distance world records and many others.
      Thats what vieira is up against for that right sided nr 8 spot and frankly i dont think he can compete. He doesnt bring anything ødegaard doesnt have and he just gets destroyed in every metric head to head.

    in my opinion for smaller frame footballer, two things are important that help them counter the physical duels. First is close control and second is the short burst in acceleration. I think he lacks in both department. While people may think his control isn't bad but it is one needed for that frame of a footballer, see cazorla,xavi,iniesta,modric and even jack. Also they all had the second part that helped them move out of tight situations. Even when fabio's initial control of the ball is good his inability to move the ball quickly with his feet or have that burst forces him into physical duels

      You're spot on about this, he doesn't seem to have the mobility of a top class player, certainly not near the ones you mentioned. He's a very good dribbler and has good passing and vision, but lacks the other important physical attributes to be a top level footballer, at least in England.
      Looking great in under 21 competitions is a completely different kettle of fish to doing it at the very top level with all the grown ups.
      I think Arsenal took a very expensive, calculated gamble on Vieira and I don't think it's going to pay off.

    For me, you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out his best game was in the Odegaard role. For me, I felt that he was an Odegaard rotation player when bought in case of injury (you know Odegaard would’ve gotten a season ender if we had no backup, it’s the Arsenal way). So, the fact that Odegaard didn’t get injured has stifled Vieira’s minutes and output. I think, this season, with the Champions League, we will see more substantial rotation so he will get more minutes in that role where he (hopefully) will excel.

    I think the main thing for me is confidence, you look at him compared to Sliva and you see Silva running at people and finding space because he knows from repetition and having confidence he can beat players where as Vieira is still unsure of what he can do at this level so doesn’t try to take most people on and becomes quite conservative in his actions, but when he does back himself and feels confident we see signs of brilliance, like some of his assists and goal against Brentford, I agree he needs to add more core strength which will help him become harder to knock off the ball and I’m certain he will be an excellent player for us in the coming years

  • @jamin1051

    I completely agree. He was quite woeful last season when he was given playing time. The main issue for me is that he doesn’t show for the ball enough. In fact he seems to hide from it. That makes him the worst player to rotate with Odegaard because literally everything goes through him. And then separately, for someone who’s supposed to be an assist merchant, he has a real knack of misplaying quite easy passes

    He has probably the best final ball in the team, produce pieces of quality like how ozil did. Everything else he has to improve on but I really think his qualities lie in his final ball. He can be the type of player that can unlock a defense that plays very compact. I think back to these few times last season where he has produced quality:
    - Weight of final ball to reverse pass to nketiah vs oxford
    - Deliberately delaying his pass off to gabi to entice defender into making a decision vs villa
    - Controlling the ball out of thin air, step over to gain yard of space then delivering the perfect cross to holding vs bodo
    - Inch perfect cross to El nenys head vs oxford
    There are other examples too

    • @toddmacadam3888
      @toddmacadam3888 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, he's undoubtedly technically gifted and produces the rare outstanding moment. The problem is their rarity. He needs to be more involved in each game. When Odegaard plays, he's CONSTANTLY dictating the action. Viera goes missing for 90% of every game he plays. His contributions during the remaining 10% are usually fantastic, but he needs to be contributing more often! As much as Ozil was criticized for going missing, Viera is significantly worse. I don't know if it's a confidence issue or a system issue, but it's something he needs to fix.
      It's also not a great sign that his replacement at Porto is putting up similar numbers, which would suggest his success at Porto may have been more about the team and their system, than his individual quality. Or maybe Eustaquio is just criminally underrated (as a Canadian and an Arsenal supporter, I hope it's the latter).

    He should be willing to develop himself as well. Players who are willing to develop themselves utilize this pre-season to work on their body, their strength. I can remember Martinelli did that at the beginning of 21/22 season and he became a different player both physically and mentally. Henderson is doing the same even at the age of 33.
    This season I expected the same from him. I expected he would utilize this pre-season to work on his body and strength. I expected to see a more muscular Fabio who couldn't be pushed 3 feet away with a simple touch by an opponent. But to my disappointment, I didn't see that sort of Fabio at the Nurnberg game. I saw the same Fabio from last season.
    Time could be running out for him. He is already 23. He is very talented and also looks like a gentle lad, but that is not enough. He should be more determined to make it at the top level.

    1. Premier League is harder & faster than Liga Portugal.
    2. His pressure is bigger since he needs to fill in Odegaard shoes everytime Arteta calls him on.
    3. Language, weather, different culture and other non-football related can affect him as a person too.
    I hope everything will work out well for him in London. But I think he's more suited in Serie A than PL.

    Vieira's ability for the half space cross and making it pinpoint is not to be discounted. He has a good eye for the final ball and definitely a good head for decision making. He makes intelligent runs into space but seems unable to carry past that.
    His problem is confidence. After playing as a starter in porto, he now has to contend being on the bench, even with the minutes given.
    With confidence, his agression returns together with his own perception of his abilities which is already there.

    This video is valid. Arteta WILL be more ruthless going forward. Tierney is a more than capable left back, but we all know he starts on the bench because of what Zinchenko can do as opposed to do what Tierney does. We know that Nketiah starts on the bench even though he's a good fox in the box, whereas we need what Jesus provides.
    With Vieira, no one simply knows what he offers that others don't.

    This video is going to look very silly soon.

    There are 2 ways Vieira can earn playing time. 1) individual performances of the highest standard. 2) collaborative performances where the players around him have their best games with him in the squad.
    There are a lot of rivals and pundits out there who think Arsenal's new signings as "this guy is there to improve depth" or "this guy is a winner".
    I don't think Arteta and his braintrust are that shallow. In the past, we've had squad improvement by player exclusion - ridding profiles who didn't add to the team. The flip side is also possible, improvement by inclusion - having players who help their teammates be the best versions, even if they themselves aren't the best player in the world.
    There's subtle parts to this, aside from stat padding. The runs, the presses, the misdirects that open up space. They may not draw the eye nor get in the stat box, but the coaches will notice.
    Do I believe Vieira is capable of making others around him better? Yes I do. Do I believe he needs to also lessen his weaknesses? Yes to that too. Do I believe he will be given time? That depends on the performances of the players he improves. If they are more prolific or more steady with him around, he will be recognized for his contributions. If they aren't... well...

    I think where he might be elite is the nuance in his decision making when it comes to his final ball. I remember the assists he got against wolves and Oxford being really interested in terms of the decisions he made to get the ball to Odegaard and Nketiah respectively. One thing is certainly clear though he absolutely cannot play the left 8 position. He should be used as a back up 10 or back up for saka on the right

  • @stunnerofagunner
    @stunnerofagunner 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For me i'm only worried when he played in the Xhaka position - he does better as a CAM/ CM from the right, he's still young and has a way to go.. The fact he's stayed in the squad thus far and isn't being loaned out yet I think Mikel see's something in him. He definitely needs to work on his physicality, but I think in the next 1/2 seasons after finding out his best position in the squad, we'll see what they bought him for.. Think he's more of a project rn

    Missed pre-season because he had an injury after the purchase, clearly would not have been at the level we needed him to be at as the season progressed and equally I believe that left 8 role that Xhaka excelled at, was initially for him. Now heading into a full pre-season, we will see what he can really do.

    Tbh I get the same vibe from him that I did from Nicolas Pepe. He seems to lack drive in my opinion. I don't feel like he has the "get up and go" mentality where you play the ball forward with intent. He plays quite conservative passes a lot of the time and can't carry a ball with intent and drive. I feel like he goes through the motions a bit too much. I'm not seeing the same desire that he showed at his previous club and I don't feel like he's really sold on what is being asked of him.

    I’ve been preaching this to all that would listen. Vieira needs to acclimatise to the prem on the RW and then eventually be brought back into the middle. Harry Redknapp did that with a certain Luka Modric when he first arrived at Spurs and that worked out alright.

    Personally I'd love to see him hit the gym a touch and bulk up a little. Doesn't have to be a massive change, I just have a feeling that lookin into a mirror with bigger arms and legs might do some good for the lads confidence. Almost like "yeah, I'm bigger now, I'm gonna dominate". Plus, with the extra minutes he's likely to get with all the extra games we have coming I do hope he builds up some momentum and gets stuck in. He's left me frustrated a lot recently but you can tell there's something in there

    Viera's only attribute is his pass. He's an assist machine if given the space which you don't get in the premier league. He can't create his own he's not quick enough. That said it's up to Arteta to see if it's possible to create space for him somehow. Our tactics can change with Declan at the 6 because he drives with the ball, meaning he will beat a man and attract more to defend him as he drives, opening up space. So maybe that'll work. It doesn't with Partey because Thomas will receive the ball and find a pass to our attackers. Viera receiving a ball this way is always met with someone bigger than him forcing him to pass it backwards again.
    I really think Declan's progressive dribbling is going to unlock a lot for us, and I'm not sure people are realizing it yet. Right now we can beat the press and reliably get the ball to our attackers, but they're typically met with defenders who are ready for it. With Declan he's going to force at least one defender to him and he'll be going with pace. Also now that Saliba is back we'll be playing our usual high line. With Havertz and Rice in the midfield it's going to be very difficult for teams to get passed us in their own half. Vierra can succeed in games where we're controlling possession in the opposition half.

    Mate - you said perfectly what I have been thinking for months. Couldn't agree more. I often brought up the Robert Pires argument last year with friends. Pires had a poor first year and looked like he couldn't handle the physicality of England. Then he was brilliant. I also hope we might see the same from Vieira. But I am also worried about Fabio Vieira.
