Loved the video! Very funny. I'm glad you enjoyed Welcome to... I couldn't have imagined that someone could make such a cool video review of my game. Thanks!
well, if you want to be able to crack another pistachios, in the form of an extension for Welcome to..., you might just have to live up to your words and do this video... ;-)
I think the most innovative game in the genre right now is "Let's Make a Bus Route" by Saashi & Saashi. While each player has a personal board to mark stuff, there is also a shared map players draw on together. This creates a lot of interaction as each player attempts to navigate the map to reach various stops and mark them off on your personal board. It is on the lighter side of the spectrum but it plays quickly. Unfortunately, this Japanese game does not have international distribution. The games comes with English rules so you can get it from import retailers like boardgamebliss and nicegameshop but you will be paying import prices.
Finally someone has explained some of these games that are filling my Twitter feed, thank you Efka! GSC and Welcome To look good, I'll have to try them once they cross the pond.
For what it's worth, I played Ganz last of those three and it's definitely mine/our favourite in the house. The other two have the main difficulty that their respective rhythms will make you more frustrated at the end (as a result of inevitable failures) while at the point in Ganz when that might happen (you have less options) you get the cascade of bonuses. In an ironic way I feel the better you can sense the numbers for "qwinto" and "welcome to" the worse they seem to be because the puzzle is a bit more obvious to unpick - you know where you should put 1, 3, 7, 15 etc. On the otherhand Ganz seems to hold its mystery a fair bit longer (and having an objective barometer of the quality of your win in the back of the rules is really good for the game too).
Love the end segment with the M & Ms. By the way I have just brought and played Clans of Caledonia, as a result of your recommendation.Thank you, I am one very happy chappie.
Watched this video when it came out. Forgot about it. Played a couple of roll and writes over the next two years. Decided to add some to my collection. Coincidentally they happen to be Qwinto, Welcome To and That’s Pretty Clever. Randomly stumble upon this video and I feel like I have a bigger trust in Efka than ever before, there were many roll and writes which I didn’t care for.
Omg, Efka, this whole video is me 3 weeks ago.. I seen a buzz building up around Ganz Schön Clever and although I'm usually more into heavy and euro games, I ordered it. Before this only roll n write I have played and own was Saint Malo (which is good but bigger, not really a travel or lunch break game), and when It came and i started playing, I was literally like you in the opening of this video, I simply couldn't stop, I think I played at least 15 games in a row.. I was instantly hooked.. Now I wanted them all.. I have looked a few videos and started ordering.. And then.. The problem..!!!! None and I meen none other roll n write game managed to scratch that same itch as Ganz Schön Clever, ok some came close like Noch Mal and Octo Dice but even they were inferior to GSC.. I'm hoping I will some day get my hands on Steamrollers couse that one looks like it could be great but for now for me at least Ganz Schön Clever is the best one out there.. Definitely deserves its Kennerspiel nomination :)
Great video! You should try La Granja: No Siesta. It's the most "gamer" roll and write I've played so far, with special abilities, self-determined scoring, etc.
Just got into x-n-writes...thanks for the vid. Picked up Hadrian's Wall and Three Sisters, will look at Qwinto now. Like cool names I do. Haru Ichiban. Qawale. Just like a good chocolate scotch. Expansions are out of this world.
Efka, like a sausage joke, you are the wurst! Had been eyeballing both Castles of Burgundy Dice Edition and GSC, and since you provided links to easily pick it up on amazon... then of course most people buy 'The Mind' when they buy it, so of course that had to go in the cart as well... unfortunately that meant stuffing the cart fuller than a membrane filled with mince.... and the sausage jokes come full circle... like boerewors
I think roll and write games are turning out to be my favourite, is that bad? Explorers and Cartographers take a lot of my time these days. Though I guess they are flip and writes.
King of Tokyo has the dice (though Welcome To and Kokoro both use cards for their RNG) but it doesn't have the box-filling part - what you do with one round does very little to limit you next round.
I can appreciate where this is coming from! But... I think "too much randomness" is a bit of a sweeping statement. It's not the randomness I dislike, it's how the design utilises it.
Four years later, I'm sick of hearing about roll & writes! ...and I just bought three more of them. Granted, some of them are "flip and write", but still the same mechanic. Random result, mark your sheet. I think they're just getting to the point where some really interesting games come out with this mechanic. And look, you were on the cutting edge!
so you deemed CoB dice as "bad" (I disagree) and you don't bother to set the WB... and then I have to watch a blue video with smashed muffins that made me order 2 new R&W games. Argh it's so hard but I have to thank you for yet another great experience. Great video and thanks for remembering me I have to buy muffins and M&Ms...
Roll n Write games are what got my girlfriend into board gaming in the first place. Her favorite one is the new Castles of Burgundy the Dice Game. My favorite one is probably Dice Stars. Thanks for this video!
I am a wannabe hardcore gamer. The kind of guy that has a closet of games (gameboardgeek type games) But struggle because 1) family man with kiddos. Limits options #2) collector addiction. if something is new and hot.. I gotta have it. even if I do not have a play group for reasons above. All that said.. i really enjoy you're vids. My wife is not a gamer and plays along. my son and daughter LOVE games (I>e king of tokyo) but are limited due to their age. (10-12yo) So thank you for giving me options. Standing in my closet is a copy of Twilight Struggle for example. Too much for the kids, and me getting lucky with my wife trumps me trying to force her to learn that game. #thestruggleisreal.
Have you looked for any boardgame groups in your area? They can offer a nice chance to play games you don't play normally. You may make some friends. I've saved money by borrowing games, and because I feel the need to own something I can play every week. I found my group on Facebook, but check meetup too
Welcome To... is available at Philibert for Europe. :)
Loved the video! Very funny. I'm glad you enjoyed Welcome to... I couldn't have imagined that someone could make such a cool video review of my game. Thanks!
If you enjoyed what I've done with your game, wait till you see what I can do with a hat, a wand and a pigeon.

I always enjoy seeing what albums you’ll display in each video, but seeing Courtney Barnett might be the best surprise yet

that's some very excellent analysis!
Glad to see another video. Was worried when there hadn't been one for a few weeks. Great stuff as always
Nothing to worry about! Expo got in the way and then we just had a lot of trouble writing this video. Should return to regular frequency now.
No Pun Included our one regret was not seeing you guys at expo. Was just a little late for my daughter. Maybe next year!
Sorry we ended up with the dead-o-clock slot! We'll have the show up online as soon as expo sends us the audio feed.

Awesome! Glad you're enjoying it.

Many have come out since, and these are still some of the best.
Great video! Do you have a link for that cool tray seen at 04:03? always needed a soft solution for errant dice throws
Jeff - my guess is here www.allrolledup.co.uk/catalog/catalog.html?type=Accessory#FF-Port-of-Peril-DT
Jeff found one at Target in the $1-$3 section.
Oooooh. I spy Stuffed Fables. Looking forward to your review of that. I saw it at the UK Games Expo and the pieces were gorgeous.

Fleet: The Dice Game comes with it`s own custom pens :)
Just got into x-n-writes...thanks for the vid. Picked up Hadrian's Wall and Three Sisters, will look at Qwinto now. Like cool names I do. Haru Ichiban. Qawale. Just like a good chocolate scotch. Expansions are out of this world.
I always thought of roll and writes being a bingo evolution because it has the same input for everybody
I was actually made aware of brutalist architecture just recently,
courtesy of comments on an Imgur album called "evil buildings." :)
"where is.. the GAME yo?!"
Eating candies non-stop while losing weight at the same time is brilliant! :)
Very cool to see a 3 game niche review, neat format.
Have you played Harvest Dice? Lovely little roll n write.
14:36 Ok this is the "pretty clever" joke that made me actually laugh out. Not sure why.
Efka, like a sausage joke, you are the wurst! That little bowl thing that you roll the dice into - what's that called?
Lyndsey Winnington I found them at Target in the $1-3 section.
@@susanscandles thanks, I'm UK based - i got a nice one online once I'd figured out what they were called though 😆
Really great stuff- i'll look up the games... but please tell me the muffins got replaced...
Thank you for doing a video on the gendra!
"genre"
OK, almost through it now. I think the all should be mine.
Roll Through the ages the bronze age and Roll Through the ages the iron age are still, years later, the best roll n write games i played.
I'm a fan of Steamrollers. A heavier roll and write pick up and deliver game. Scratches that same itch but with some tougher choices.
Clever is great. Also, Cartographers is awesome.
You need to try Fleet the dice game
I think roll and write games are turning out to be my favourite, is that bad?
Explorers and Cartographers take a lot of my time these days.
Though I guess they are flip and writes.
no Qwixx ? :O
Yeah i remember Yahtzee he's on the escapist all the time :P
Muffins from Lidl were always excellent, cmon
Crispy M&Ms are the best they've ever made. Pretzel ones come close, but... not quite the same.
Yeah it's called King of Toyko these days
King of Tokyo has the dice (though Welcome To and Kokoro both use cards for their RNG) but it doesn't have the box-filling part - what you do with one round does very little to limit you next round.
It is so weird to hear Efka praising rolling games, I thought he really didn't like games with too much randomness.
I can appreciate where this is coming from! But... I think "too much randomness" is a bit of a sweeping statement. It's not the randomness I dislike, it's how the design utilises it.
I love qwinto!
Four years later, I'm sick of hearing about roll & writes!

VivaJava: the Coffee Game: the Gice Game anyone? No? Just me? ok.
so you deemed CoB dice as "bad" (I disagree) and you don't bother to set the WB... and then I have to watch a blue video with smashed muffins that made me order 2 new R&W games. Where did I say it's bad???
you did say "not good enough" comparing CoB to Qwinto. But I wonder if everyone liked yellow what would happen to blue?
Was a little surprised by that myself. Around here Kokoro followed by CoB dice definitely get requested the most!
There is absolutely not much wrong with either of them but if I have to compare them to the other three they pale in comparison.
Roll n Write games are what got my girlfriend into board gaming in the first place. Her favorite one is the new Castles of Burgundy the Dice Game.
My favorite one is probably Dice Stars. Thanks for this video!
Hey man, you are looking great!
Have you lost some weight? You are looking good 🙂
1:45 There is no Efka, only ZUUL.
Clever's sheets look some kind of lottery scratchcard... times infinity.

Courtney Barnett! ❤️❤️❤️
Courtney Barnett is awesome.
But Lidl cookies though.
Lidl in-store bakery products are delicious, and their ukeleles are second to none
DistantBikerPlanet True story.
Lidl is dope, but I wouldn't trust their bakery...
