The Tiger is very unreliable only 30-40% of the fleet are active at a time the rest is in maintenance. The Aussies are already replacing them cause of high maintenance and cost. Supposedly the new upgrade the French are working on is to fix that but Germany wasnt on board with that one. The H145M is a stopgap until a new system is developed. So Germany will be lacking a dedicated attack helicoper in the near future. The H145M can't fill that role it just dosent have the payload capability.
The Tiger was meant to compete with the AH-64 but the problem for the Tiger is the fact that AH-64 main user is the US Army The US army consistently pushed for more and more upgrades to it as well has been in combat through several conflicts By the time the Tiger starting going to combat, it was 2009 and the AH-64 was established by then Case in point, the Tiger MKIII is the same Longbow capability that the AH-64 has had since the late 90s The same growing pains that the Tiger operators have, the AH-64 and US army already resolved during the 90s and early 2000s Combined with the fact that there over 5000 AH-64 built while their is just 180 Tigers the writing is the wall
I think to some degree its that attack helicopters arguably are becoming obsolete. The next 20 years will see massive (re-) introduction and development of SHORAD systems. And they're gonna be everywhere. If it can kill a major UAV at range, it can kill a helicopter. At the same time, said UAV will pick up some of the attack helicopter's strengths at a much lower cost. A kitted out attack helicopter now approaches the cost of some fighter aircraft. The cost/benefit of an attack helicopter arguably will not be sufficient anymore.
It is not clear that there is much use for attack helicopters in near peer conflict anymore, now even less with massive strengthening of short range air defense against drones is a given -- with most of that working against helicopers, too. This is a safe medium size short term measure and therefore a good decision.
It is more of a late successor to the Bo 105 than to the Tiger. The question is whether the concept of a heavy attack helicopter still makes sense in today's world. The Ukraine war shows quite well that these can also be easily shot down. The H145M is cost-efficient and has good operational readiness. Its modular capabilities make it possible to respond quickly to mission requirements. Which makes it the more sensible solution overall. The German version of the Tiger has always been a flawed one due to its design as a tank destroyer without a nose cannon.
I see it the same way as you, why throw millions of money away when in the end the cheaper helicopter can stay in the air just as long as the expensive one - today even the expensive attack helicopters are shot down just as quickly as a cheap H145M. If the tank destroyer characteristics of the civilian model are just as good, why should you throw extra money out the window unnecessarily?! In addition, the BO 105 shows how successfully and well a civilian helicopter can be used if the tactics are adapted to it.
I also see it this way. It is great that some start to think realistic. The future does not leave much space for a slow moving chopper near any modern enemy.
I think specialized attack helicopters can still be useful in modern conflicts. All helicopters are and always have been vulnerable to ground fire. How ever, the Tiger is mainly useless because it's just a terrible helicopter that never works most of the time.
It was a sensible and very economical decision to purchase this tried-and-tested helicopter instead of a US helicopter or even a new combat helicopter of our own. The concept of the ‘combat helicopter’ has recently suffered noticeably in the Ukraine war, as helicopters are easy to locate and combat. As a liaison and light transport helicopter on its own territory, a helicopter naturally remains indispensable.

Don’t know about it replacing the Tiger, two very different machines. If they want a AH then the Apache or Viper would be a better option. The RAF and British Army are purchasing six for use in Cyprus and Brunei.
This is an airbus eurocopter advertisement video - nothing else. The german Luftwaffe was so frustrated with the performance and the maintainability of the "Tiger" that they simply refused to start any modernisation- or mid-life-improvement-programm for this helicopter. And so the Luftwaffe searched a replacement for the "Tiger". What they wanted was something like the "AH 64 D Longbow-Apache" or even better, but the german government made it clear that any new helicopter HAD TO BE an airbus-eurocopter model. And the H145M was in use as a liaison and transport helicopter in german military and police units - so airbus-eurocopter "bolted" some more arms to this helicopter and PRESTO - Luftwaffe had to swallow it as the "ideal" "Tiger-replacement"... - to make things even better for the Luftwaffe, the german government ordered not the 150 + helicopters that the Luftwaffe had determined as their "minimum requirement" to fulfill all of its duties, but only 62 with an option of further 20... But to make things even better, the german government was willing to pay eurocopter for the now 62 + 20 ordered H145M the same amount of money that the originally planned 150 + costed in airbus-eurocopters first offer... Stupid german money at it´s best. The H145M is a stopgap-solution, nothing more. It cant do the jobs it is intended to do, and there will be too few of them to fullfill the operational requirements that the german government and the german military assured NATO to fullfill. The only people happy about the H145M are the people at airbus-eurocopter. Germany again gifted via it´s military the european aircraft industry (nearly completly situated in France!) a lot of money to receive not-suitable choppers in much to few quantities (and secured with this order with a lot of german money a lot of french jobs in France).
yes. youre right. Its fking embarassing.. What we germans (?) or at least our goverments always make clear, how good they are in throwing money around, payed by the tax paying working men (and women). Recently I read some news, that retiring age in china was lifted... to 55 😂. We will be working ourselves straight into our Graves, retiring age like what now? 75? wtf.. no wonder 30% vote for far right parties nowadays
You don't seem to know much about Airbus. The helicopters are produced in Donauwörth, Germany. Not France. Military production of Airbus is also mainly in Germany. Manching, Bayern has the final assembly line of the Eurofighter and a ton of other military production.
Thats nonsence. First, Airbus is a european company, not a french one. Of course the German economy is going to profit from the helicopter. Second, even if the higher price is true, the helicopter is still highly useful to the German military regardless of its costs. 62 helicopters are much better than none at all.
The German army had huge success with the Boeing 105 helicopter even though it wasn't actually a specially developed combat helicopter. Special tank destroyer tactics were developed with the Bo 105 and these were very successful. I can imagine that this helicopter, together with new tactics, will also be very successful even if it doesn't come close to the capabilities of the Tiger. You can also talk about quantity rather than quality here - for the money of one Tiger you can almost buy two H145Ms. The H145M also has some major advantages over the Tiger that the Tiger couldn't offer, such as troop transport and medical transport. But apart from that, it is stupid to make comparisons here anyway, since the Tiger is a pure attack, i.e. combat helicopter, and the H145M is a multi-role helicopter which originally came from the civil, not specifically military, sector.
@@michaelburggraf2822 Ya right my father was working at the MBB at Ottobrunn near Munich, I have no idea why I was so stupid and wrote Boing even though you are of course right and my father was himself involved in the BO 105 production and was employed in the materials testing laboratory.
Dedicated attack helicopters are MANPAD fodder in a near peer war as seen in Ukraine. Drones will be used for direct fire support missions and helicopters will be used to ambush mechanized assaults. This helicopter is perfect for that. Smart choice.
If only the EU actually United across the board to include a Unified European Armed Forces it will be a substantially better and cohesive force compared to what's available now. They should have been put this into play when the idea for the EEC/EU was first drafted, a united European Defense Force is a need, not a pipe dream, if the conflict in Ukraine doesn't show that then drop the EU as a whole and get on with the trivialities of the status quo
In my oppinion it is rediculous to assume that this civil-aviation-offshoot can replace the tiger in its role. I also highly doubt that this helicopter is suited for highly contested airspaces as for example ukraines battlefields, in which even the tiger would probably very fast reach his limits. Way to much glass in highly probable hit areas, very dangerous for the crew.
Ukrain has shown that attack helicopter do not fit the modern days. something to provide nothing more but fire support over your position is the concept of the new h145
The only reason why the Russians can use any attack helicopters at all is because of their overwhelming air superiority. Otherwise attack helicopters are obsolete. I guess we have seen the last generation of manned attack helicopters.
It could be a varsitile addition to the helocopter fleet to fill a gap of a light attack helicopter. Bowever, with a dedicated attack helicopter like a apache or even cobra, its just not going to work. Imho, airbus should learn from what whent wrong with the tiger and build a medium attack helicolter with a nose mounted autogun, able to pepper APCs. 30mm in addition to a coax mounted 7.62mm minigun. Add some amounts for gen 4 anti tank missiles / unguided rockets and this thing would slap.
This is a step back to the Bo105. It shows the desaster, the German Tiger is - mainly for technical reasons. Why were the French and the Spanish able, to make the Tiger a sufficient attack helicopter, but the Germans were not?
tbf spanish tigers are ina very serious state of disrepair, everyone has the same problem and its money. spare parts arent ordered and some airframes are cnibalized to repair and keep running other airframes, its shameful
That's a replacement for the BO-105 anti-tank helicopters at best. Though of course 20 years to late and not as many as needed. Which is still great because those were pretty good. But it will never replace the Tiger especially if we're preparing for a new high intensity confrontation with Russian mechanised armies. If they don't want to keep the Tiger in service, fine. Then buy Apaches. But that wouldn't be "cost effective" (aka cheap). Anyway, maybe that's completely wrong in the age of drones and nobody needs an attack helicopter any more. 🤷♂
who needs a multi million dollar chopper anymore ? ... an octocopter strapped with high explosives is way more cost effective and nearly impossible to shoot down .. those days are gone
Are the drones are immune to ECM methods to keep flying to their attack missions? Until independent and trustworthy A.I. used for drone ops are here, then the dedicated human operated gunships are the way to go.
Its is a great civilian and emergency services and police Helicopter. But its no front line combat Helicopter, is there currently any programs in place be item a multi nation project for a European front like Battle Gunship or support Helicopter?
A real fake step for the Germans. The Tiger wasn't at all a great attack heli (not even a great omnirole heli) full of issues to fix and not so good as his counterparts. Now that the Italians have released that beast of the AW249 Fenice (an UAV mothership with more firepower than an Apache and with Datalink, multidomain warfare systems and an huge data space for future AI applications) they should have chose to buy the Italian Fenice instead to go with this useless thing.
It’s still not a dedicated attack helicopter, but it’ll be good for the light attack role! Germany just needs to invest in a dedicated attack helicopter.
Dedicated attack helicopter are either shot down in large numbers or not used at all out of fear it gets shot down, as the Ukraine war demonstrates. Why would Germany waste billions of euros it desperatly needs for other requirements for a concept that is appearently obsolete?
Ridiculous.... you replace a gunship with a civil-aviation based helicopter. What is the point of a helicopter any soldier can shoot down with an assault rifle?
A choice that reflects decades of abandonment by the German political class, which has a myopic view of geopolitics. A country that treats its armed forces as a burden and an unpleasant obligation of its functions that justifies everything in the name of a collective defense that understands Romanian, Portuguese and Greek brigades and battalions will defend the country. Any military enthusiast knows that these helicopters are no substitute for a thoroughbred attack aircraft. A primary error and when there is a need to use it in a real battle situation it will be a resounding failure. I feel sorry for German society that spent decades criticizing and trying to erase the country's history because everything that came from the past was wrong (fascism, that's a mistake) and in this justification it sailed under the umbrella of US defense and always failed to collaborate decently with the collective defense of the alliance. It appears to be a cowardly and opportunistic country. The SPD, Greens and FDP coalition should have suffered such a huge defeat at the polls due to the unpatriotic opinions of its members. That didn't happen. It's losing, but nothing so significant that it can't recover soon. I have the impression that the population is complicit in all the mistakes made by the politicians of this current government. If the US left Germany alone to learn and fight with resources and without decades of abandonment about its responsibility to defend its own country and not outsource its security to others.
It's also true that Germany is suffering a severe crisis, shops are closing as they become increasingly poorer, the Tiger has probably become too expensive. If anything, they lived until the end of their lives given the economic situation
The Tiger is an attack chopper, the H145M is not. I'd say it's an economic decision/settlement more that a replacement.

Useful video, more knowledge for everyone, thank you for the hard work of making this video😑😑😑
The Bo 105 wasn't produced by Boeing but by Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm in Germany.
@@michaelburggraf2822 Ya right my father was working at the MBB at Ottobrunn near Munich, I have no idea why I was so stupid and wrote Boing even though you are of course right and my father was himself involved in the BO 105 production and was employed in the materials testing laboratory.
Drinking game. 1 shot every time they say H145M. Good luck.
The Tiger is used by the Germany Army, not the Air Force.
Dedicated attack helicopters are MANPAD fodder in a near peer war as seen in Ukraine. Drones will be used for direct fire support missions and helicopters will be used to ambush mechanized assaults. This helicopter is perfect for that. Smart choice.
Need to star the tiger 2 program fix the mistakes that come from the tiger, or buy the AH64 apache
Dunno anything about helicopters and am no military man but it sound well thought through to buy a modular multirole helicopter.
It should be redesigned to a new form, like MI8 to MI24, like the development of AH1 Cobra.
New Agusta Westland attack heli leads the way.
@@Vatnik_tschistilkano, he is clearly not aware of that. A lot of the comments under this video are just incredibly stupid.😐
Australia even did a quick exit, getting rid off the Tiger.
Tiger'$ are a desaster. Germany need a Multipurpose Heli at first...
And the H145 M is well thought out tested & flexible... .
the war industry sure is fucked up but they make some cool toys
Hope Tamiya made this scale model😉
02:04 min - does anyone know why there are EoTech sights attached in the cockpit?
To fire unguided weapons like Machine Guns or small rockets.
Somewhere similar to HAL Rudra.
🤷♂
Can We Get Updates On War In Ukraine
reporting from ukraine is the best channel for accurate updates (ukrainian bias but the best on u tube in my opinion )
why would you put ballistic weapons on a helicopter !!
AI generated? everytime a shot, when H145M is sad and you're drunk....
they should put the billions in the development of autarc small attac drones with high range. all other things make no sense anymore.
🇨🇦 Griffon replacement (?) 🤔
who needs a multi million dollar chopper anymore ? ... an octocopter strapped with high explosives is way more cost effective and nearly impossible to shoot down .. those days are gone
lmao what a fool you are holy shit
Are the drones are immune to ECM methods to keep flying to their attack missions? Until independent and trustworthy A.I. used for drone ops are here, then the dedicated human operated gunships are the way to go.
How close do you need to get to the threat to operate that kind of drones?
How many troops can your octopussy reallocate?
The Tiger failed totally.
They go back to an updated Bo.
What a joke to the taxpayer
Thats rubbish. The tiger was very useful in a number of German missions. You seem to have very little knowledge about the German military.
ITS SIMILAR TO HAL RUDRA
Let me guess, 4 orders will be delivered in 5 years? 🤦🏼♀️
If Pistorius becomes nxt german chancellor, thats a maybe, if not, 4 is very optimistic.
Are those glass screen and windows bullet proof? If not even an enemy with a pistol can cause a lot of damage.
Why would Germany waste billions of euros it desperatly needs for other requirements for a concept that is appearently obsolete?
but it's a civilian aircraft with a paint job ! does it have armour plating or just wishful thinking ?
It´s armour are 2 rolls of duct-tape for "quick-repair"...🤣🤣🤣
The H145M is not an civilian aircraft. The M stands for military, so its a military helicopter based on a civilan module.
@Taxisch it has additional armor but nowhere near the level of certification vs typical assault rifles like ak47... completely useless
That's like sending a Suzuki micro car againt T-34s
This thing is never gonna survive in true battlefield situations
This is just garbage and way worse then the Tiger ever was!!!
Ridiculous.... you replace a gunship with a civil-aviation based helicopter. What is the point of a helicopter any soldier can shoot down with an assault rifle?
If your assault helicopter can shot and hit 10-15km, then you're welcome.
One of the most laughable decision the Bundeswehr has made ever.
Everybody keeps hating on attack helicopters but the Russian KA-51 has been very successfull regardless
They do a circuit, fire off their rockets while they're at it, and land again. It's more like, "since they're already there..."
this looks very conventional compare to apache..
❤😂😂😂🎉🎉😢😢😮😮😮😮😅
Doofer billig-Ersatz.😢
Rather you should have bought a Indian Rudra Mark lV helicopter which is better in everything than this one
This is a waste of money. I feel like this helicopter is already out or something like this already exists.
Hey look food for Ka-52 & Mi-28.
It's also true that Germany is suffering a severe crisis, shops are closing as they become increasingly poorer, the Tiger has probably become too expensive. If anything, they lived until the end of their lives given the economic situation
