I wouldn’t say this it’s a kids show; it’s a HUMAN show. I’m 30 and still go back to rewatch this masterpiece. Lots of thought provoking ideas, especially this one.
I don't think Princess Bubblegum is selfish per se, but definitely egotistic. Everything she does she does on behalf of others but she also assumes that she is always right. She simultaneously puts everyone's needs ahead of her own while giving them no autonomy and making all of their decisions for them. She's a benevolent tyrant, and the series is going to play with that a lot going forward
considering how old she is and how much she's gone through you can understand her being the control freak she is. Between the apocalypse, her family and a few other things i can't say because it would spoil Nux. Bubblegum eventually concludes that the only way for things to be safe and peaceful she needs to micromanage all of society.
It wasn't until some years after Adventure Time finished its run that I learned Lemons were bred through human cultivation and not discovered in nature, so Lemongrab being a take on Frankenstein's Monster almost makes a tiny bit more sense n~no it's still bonkers.
That's actually a really cool fact! I never would have guessed that lemons were a man made product and not a natural one. That really does add an extra layer to the lemongrab lore.
22:28 She made Lemongrab a long time ago, when she had very little experience with candy life. She didn’t purposely make them like this. You saw how she reacted when lemongrab first woke up, she was shocked at how he was.
She says that but much later in the series, we can see that she’s been successfully making candy life ever since she had the appearance of a very young child. The only explanation is she was trying something new, to create a new type of candy life. And she failed.
She literally made copies of herself/candy people since before she ever started the whole "Kingdom" thing. Lemon grab was after, she made him intentionally dumb so he doesn't turn out like her family, same with most/all candy people.
@@UnluckyLilly I think the implication is that she was trying to created something of average intelligence, smarter than the child like candy people, but not as smart as herself. She must have suceded at some point because Peppermint Buttler is a thing.
@@at5203 her “cousin” was one of the first candy people she created, and he seemed to have around average intelligence. I believe she said “he’s my first creation so he’s first in line to the throne” which was an outright lie as we see later. His creation was basically retconned.
I was wondering, why in the last episode lemongrab just seemed really hungry like he just wanted to eat that entire episode. And now that I know that this particular episode is right after it it makes a lot of sense.
One of the show's favorite topics is the relationship of creation and creator. This show was aimed at the generation that will start to dabble in the creation of sentient-like intelligence. Adventure Time literally gives you a step by step on how to ethically make a sentient intelligence
I always thought of lemongrab as someone made acidentally broken, not intentionally. And no ammount of nurturing would have changed him. He is "just like that". At that point fixing him would be the more fucked up thing to do. Even if possible. And its not like she doesnt care about him. He was alone, Pb gave him some of her people to acompanny him. He treated them horribly, torturing them to make them more like him. She them made someone that is like him to keep him companny. Gave them food, they chose to screw that up. She them gave them seed so they can grow their own food. They chose to screw that up also with zero though. Now she says she just have to keeps a closer eye on him. The message i took from this is, this is not in fact "all her fault". Accountability needs to be taken even if you were made broken. She does have a god complex but... is she not thou? She is just letting one of her creations choose how they live while trying to nudge them in the right direction.
True. She also didn't just make him for fun. She made him hoping he would be a good heir. He was not. But she gave him his own kingdom anyway and still took care of him. The same with Gilliad(sp?). She didn't make him/her (?) just because. She wanted an heir. It just keeps failing. The others she made to be friends with. Others she does seem to make as an experiment. But most she legit seems to want to have a relationship with. She was alone, just like them. She just did a better job not being pure evil lol
Thank you for bringing the adventure time analysis videos god bless 🙏 Also a heads-up; in 5 episodes from this one, you're gonna absolutely lose it. Big lore episode.
It feels like it wasn't just the idea of PB creating life friviliously and not just the Lemongrabs. But the fact that she didn't teach them to treasure life through her own inactions as a parental figure. A familial link of irresponsibility and lack of accountability. But, without giving much away, I think PB was never taught to be close or even trust her family. (Besides her brother.) But her family was just born into the world without parents. So who's fault is it really?

Nux casually forgetting that the entire reason Lemongrab 2 exists is because Bubblegum cared enough to make a companion for the first Lemongrab because he was feeling lonely.
If you really think about, there’s a lot wrong with Bubblegum, but she has a lot of love for her creations, faults and all. Sometimes people are made evil by circumstance; others just because they can. That’s the whole point of Lemon John here. He learned compassion through a beating heart because he was a faulted creation and was born that way and only given the chance through artificial means. The lemongrabs don’t have that biological defect, implying that they always were capable of compassion, but choose otherwise, hence “There’s nothing wrong with them; they are just like that.”
@@estebanbr7596 I guess, but the current hypothesis is that she can’t do anything else. The whole point of that episode was her trying to understand what she did wrong with him. He can’t “act normal” because his lemon heart doesn’t see that as normal. There was *technically* nothing wrong with him, so there was nothing to fix like with Lemon John. The solution is that if he can’t get along with normal candy, he would only get along with himself, hence, the second lemon grab.
@estebanbr7596 The first Lemongrab was feeling lonely but was unable to get along with others. And since Bubblegum wanted him to be happy but also didn't want him hurting her, she created a companion for him, one who understands his weird ways of thinking. The second Lemongrab was in no way worse than the original. He gave the first Lemongrab companionship and made him satisfied.
I'll say this much: all the lemon creatures are not Princess Bubblegum's fault. Lemongrab is essentially and by this point is entirely aware she is better than he is at creating a fairly self-sustaining ecosystem. He lacks the capacity for self-delusion to believe his creations are better... and he knows she would have been willing to attempt making him subjects had he expressed the need. This was a result of him deliberately choosing not to involve her... and the reason he hasn't already tried a coup is because he also realizes that generally she's a better leader. His motivation in not involving her, possibly after the first couple of attempts at making candy life that turned out this way, was spite. She bears some responsibility for his base capacity for spite, but he's also never either attempted to work out a more effective means of self-management to avoid his driving need to indulge in it nor has he even asked for help with that - and he is aware it's a destructive tendency that isn't doing him any good either.
