Hello, I just found your very detailed Sennhieser review, thank you! Back in the late 90's I bought a pair of HD 580 Jubliee, HD 565 Ovations, and HD 545 Referance headphones. Family members made off with the Jubliee and Ovations and I gave HD 545 to my wife to use with her computer.
Well she didn't use them so we sealed them and put them in storage. Just rediscovered them a couple of weeks ago - mint condition but replaced ear pads and head band - sound really good so got to thinking I should get some new Sennhiesers, I just received the new HD 490 Pro Plus which are flat out wonderful. I now have the newest reference and a like new 25 year old reference pair. 🎉

Great take, I never considered Silver Screens as an attempt to remove the veil.

I have to give you credit for a very detailed , in depth, time consuming video.
My hearing has deteriorated over the years. Listening to single tone sine wave frequencies with 1khz. As loud I as I could tolerate, by the time I get to 10 khz. I can just barely hear it, by 13.5 Khz., nothing.
So for me, I only care about frequency response below 10 khz. , which isn't as bad as it would seem because 95% of music happens below 10 khz.,
Yea, I found out about the three dots on the left earcup and why they were there. I think that's pretty cool.

Thank you so much for saying that! I made this video three times and this actually was my first attempt. My other two attempts were to try to shorten or condense what I said, but in the end I decided to just let the first version because it said all the things I wanted. So thanks again!

Great review. One thing I didn't know when searching for headphones is that you don't want to aim for a flat response (unless you have a particular reason related to your hearing) as the headphones' responses are tailored to complement the ear's.
I guess if you are serious about your headphone listening you could always have an audiogram done before trying any so then you'll know better what it is you're hearing with different sets.
For closed vs. open caps: I cannot think of how anyone could get used, let alone feel comfortable with closed caps.
I'd pay very close attention to the comfort factor and anything feeling like it's compressing your ears too much, I'd avoid. Some foam pads leave more room than others but your ears and head are also different than others' so I'd make sure I feel comfortable and the ears have room inside those caps. Now, your choice might affect the bass response you'll get but I wouldn't put bass response over long term comfort or the ears' health any day. Bear in mind that the longer you listen to headphones, the quicker your hearing is going to deteriorate. It doesn't matter that you never exceed certain volume levels, have breaks etc.: prolonged exposure to headphone listening will cause progressive loss of hearing. Having said that, ambient noise is also a factor, so in some cases headphones might appear like the right solution. I'd also experiment with ear plugs in those cases.

Nice seeing someone talk about all these esoteric differences I've been reading about on forums (mainly SBAF) lol.
Have you heard about Custom Can's copper mod? They are sold online from the UK. From what I understand the idea is similar to JAR, its a copper ring your adding for weight as opposed to a full on brace the JAR has. The mod is also reversible where the biggest challenge involves getting the center foam back inside the spider.
That's all I can really add since I'm Just a dude looking for a new Headphone from a 598.

I have heard OF the copper mod, but I have not heard them. Although some trusted people I know say it is not quite as good as the JAR mod.
