@@D4Darious end of act one is Morpheus answer on what is the Matrix. That is the question of act one not meeting of Morpheus. Matrix is Hero journey. So end of first act is when Morpheus explains Neo what is Matrix ending with battery and his refusal. Act two is starting with learning martial arts..So you are bit wrong in that.
I like your analysis. Really great. Another layer I found when I looked at this film was the brilliant use of archetypes, from a Jungian sense. Unpacking the use of archetypes in this film, gives a clear picture of how each character is cleverly used and placed to serve the story. Would you agreed that the film is also a great example of the Hero's journey as well, which has a lot more turning points than the 3 act structure? Anyway... that said... I really liked your analysis. The film is also just brilliant on so many levels. Thanks you for your video.
Keep pumping up all these videos. I can spend a whole half day just watching your videos and learn the stuff they didn't had time teaching in school, or sometimes when they miss out teaching us certain things in school. Thank you.
2 questions: 1. Do you like the Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions? (I don't, but to each his own) 2. Could you possibly do a break down of a bad movie that has terrible structure? It's good to know how the three act structure can be awesome and useful and it's good to see good examples of it that we can learn from. But we could also learn some things from movies that completely ef-up the structure.
1. I did enjoy the second two movies but for different reasons. They definitely don't live up to the first in any way. 2. I'll see about doing breakdowns for bad movies later on down the road. I agree those would definitely be helpful aswell. Thanks for the questions Griff!
I enjoyed the matrix sequels tbh. For Reloaded people state that the architects speech put them off it, but that was intentional before the architect gives his speech he tells Neo Most of his answerrs he wont understand as he's a machine he doesn't "dumb" things down when he speaks like a human does. The Rave scene I will admit was unneeded. but apart from that everything else was awesome, The Motorway chase, The Chateau Scene, The Burly brawl, The meeting scene at the beginning and Neo Catching Trinity and kissing her on top of the rooftop was amazing. Revolutions I actually enjoyed the battle of zion scene which most people seem to hate, if you hate that scene understandably you'll hate the film as thats most of the film. But that's kinda been the point of the series since the beginning the Last Battle between the humans and the machines...
I always tell people the matrix had one of the best 3rd acts of all time. It gave you everything a viewer could ask for and a roller coaster of emotion.
That training part of Act II was a slog, though. The whole white room scene has put me to sleep multiple times. I wonder how that lull could have been done differently.
Falling Down is a great film to break down. As simple as it seems, there is a lot of imagery and symbolism in it that most people miss. This Matrix breakdown was great, bravo.
Very well done, Darious. I needed a video to create an ED TED talk and yours was the only one I found where the host acted like an adult, didn't swear every 5 seconds, spoke clearly, and knew his stuff. Thank you for your time and effort. By the way, I've watched the Matrix series movies so many times that I think I've worn out the DVDs. :)
Good breakdown. I saw all of those plot points to the second. Act 3 of that movie is the most badass 30 minutes of film I have ever seen, likely because we get to see a complete nerd turn into a run-'n-gun action hero.
Thank you for making all these videos. I enjoy them, and they are very understandable. I am a newbie in this area, but I have been a teacher for a long time, and I can tell you that you are a good teacher.
This is BRILLIANT, sir!!! :D I was looking for something more "academic", but you crushed this so hard you hit EVERYTHING IMPORTANT quickly and clearly!!! THANK YOU, SIR!!!
A perfect breakdown. I can tell you are as enthusiastic about the structure of this story as anyone who appreciates "the craft". Want to send you the first issue of one of my comics and ask you to give me some notes when you have time. Thanks!
Great video by the way, enjoyed every bit of it. Very detailed and informative (much like all your videos). I personally believe your deserve more subscribers for this content, the effort put into these videos is clearly seen. Thanks so much, have a great day :D
I write romantic fiction but your video is an excellent overview of story structure. I have watched this video dozens of times! Keep the videos coming, Darius.
I loved the way you explained what was good about the structure not just the structure itself, could you do that a bit more in your newer videos please?? :) Thanks heaps for making these, they're super helpful.
I know that this might seem random, but how did you do your copyrighting? I am interested in making something myself but I want to know the CORRECT way to copyright my work. Can you help? Thank you!
Hi Darious! Just wanted to let you know how awesome and helpful all your videos are. You are knowledgeable, articulate, entertaining and I wish you all the success in the world. Please keep these videos coming. I have a suggestion for a video I would like to see: a character breakdown where you talk about the 5 main characters in a movie, describing what roles they play (eg, protagonist, antagonist, mentor, love interest, etc), and describe what characteristics make them effective in that role, what makes them unique, etc. From my own experience, I think beginners tend to include way too characters, especially characters that have no clearly defined role at all or multiple characters all playing the same role that really ought to be combined into the single character. In another video you recommend that beginners stick to no more than 4 or 5 main characters. By my reckoning, The Matrix really only involves 6 main characters (plus a bunch of minor characters that are pretty forgettable and are mostly there to die at the convenient moment). I'm sure many other movies are similar. A few character breakdowns of famous movies would show how easy it is to create conflict and a compelling story with “only” 5 main characters when they are the right type of characters.
FINALLY got around to watching this. Been super-busy the last few months, so I fell off the Darious train. Apologies. Another really enlightening, helpful video. I actually revisited the movie for the first time in years last night, so this video benefited from the story still being fresh in my mind. This really is a classic that holds up amazingly well even today. I really hope you can sometime do a breakdown of Inception, a similar high-concept intellectual-friendly blockbuster.
what's up Jones! I totally understand being busy. Thank you for the feedback :) Inception is a great movie. When I do movie breakdowns again I'll definitely put that one on the list!
Could you do a story breakdown of Cloud Atlas? Would you have to do a breakdown of each of the 6 stories separately, or could you do it as a whole? Was just curious. Love your videos.
Great video! I had a question to ask. How do I put the opponents in the story in a hierarchy? Like how do I know which opponent is more deadlier or crucial than the other?
Hey bruh, I really want to thank you for this video because I have a paper due tonight for my philosophy class. I have to compare Plato's "Allegory of the cave" to "The Matrix"...... long story short....... you saved my ass!!! Bout to go get on this paper..... Preciate it black man.... keep up the good work.
I normally don't post reactions to these types of tutorial vids, but I'll gladly make an exception for you. 90% of the time with these type of vids, it's some dude, douche even, with a nasal voice constantly hassling people to subscribe. Which I in return never do. In this instance though, I was compelled to drop a line. Your video's are great and you seem like a very down to earth guy. Your style of communicating is natural and really easy to listen to. And even more important, your'e very knowledegable. I've Just watched a bunch of your vids, including your short seafood taster, and by the looks of it you seem to know what you're doing when you're on set. I'll be keeping a look out for your channel and definitely send one of my first films you're way. It's set in the Netherlands, where I come from. Aiit all the best from Amsterdam.
Thank you Neal. I'm honored to be one of the few whom you've posted a comment too. I definitely don't like hassling people to subscribe.personally, I hate it when youtubers do that. let us know when you finish your short!
Brilliant brilliant man, u broke down my fav film just the way. I follow you from South Africa. I wish to screen your video (this one) at a workshop i'm conducting - is that cool with you?
Hey Darious, great work once again. I can imagine how much work these videos take, particularly when you're finding and editing those clips from the movie. I've always wondered about these things-- what's your process of editing and putting it together? It's like a chicken before the egg, cart in front of the horse kind of deal. Do you find the clips first and then do your voiceover over them? Or do you do your voiceover, find your clips, and then fine tune it from there? Or is it a different process? This was very impressive and useful. Great job again.
Thanks for commenting Tyler and I'm glad you enjoyed it once again. I usually watch the movie first and do my analysis. Record my voice over, and then find the clips that I need and trip them to fit my voiceover. It does take awhile (longer than I'd like lol) Thanks for the question.
Hey thanks man- I must say this was a job well done! I came to this video after watching a few others by you, and wasn't really expecting much-but wow-the plot-breakdown was pretty impressive and to-the-point! I would love to see you do an analysis of a non-Hollywood film though. There's this series called the Infernal Affairs which I watched a few years back- and it's as non-Hollywood as it gets! The series is full of silences, none of them dead ( Scorsesse did a pretty bad version of it called The Departed).
great I love your film breakdowns, I watched Act 3, and I will watch more ...great delivery, and explanation.....do you teach? write screenplays? Would you consider doing some Indie films...not just big blockbusters, even though I agree, Matrix is one of my favorites and great writing, You're the One Darius! Tree of Life?
Pratik Mathur Inception would probably be a tough on. Great film. I haven't done movie breakdowns in a while, partly because they take so much time to do. When I get back into them I've definitely got Inception on the list.
Hey there Darious. I don't have time at the moment to watch this video, but I'm commenting to tell you I saw How To Train Your Dragon 2 last weekend. I'm curious for your thoughts on it if you have already/will see it. I'd even say you should try an actual review video. Just figured you'd have some great things to say about it, given you did a great job breaking down the first film. Its only an idea; if nothing else, I do recommend the movie!
Very insightful from a filmmaking standpoint... but could you do a breakdown on Reloaded and Revolutions? I've just finished watching Reloaded and hell was it ever weird in its structure. I loved most of the individual scenes, but it basically felt like a bunch of weird sidequests that weren't cohesive enough. Still, gotta love Hugo Weaving.
Great movie. I always thought it was a great example of an action movie that actually has a great plot. Most don't. Not a fan of the second, but then maybe it just didn't live up to the first. Third brought me back to being a fan.
Very impressive breakdown. The Matrix is a badboy film. It changed the game for action movies. One of the things I never quite worked out was Neo's journey plot wise. Is he a reluctant hero? Where is his characters resolution? I don't think they quite nailed that. I think this is one of the failings of the sequels, I never really cared about Neo after the end of this movie.
coolhandnuke I think the sequels were a let down in more than one way. I'd say at times Neo is a reluctant hero. He achieves his resolution when he finally believes he is the one.
Great breakdown of my favorite movie taught me alot of hoew to build a interesting story that is similar to my taste in films well done my friend well done btw there are 4 matrix films the 4th is the animatrix which explains how everything started so in a sense a prelude all in 9 episodes of high volume anime action for those anime lovers ^.^
Nice bro, I don't watch movies the same anymore. Now I only watch movies for camera angles, color grading, lighting technics. I gotta ask, how many times have you seen this movie?
Nice Breakdown D4Darious. But there's one thing I never understood, where's the blood from that "bug" crawling into his skin? I'm not one to pick at movies much but that always stuck out to me when I was younger.
Hahahaha. I actually never thought of that lol. he would be bleeding all over the place with something that size burrowing into him. Wow. I feel a little dumb for never wondering that lol.
Hey D4Darious you mentioned in your 3 act structure video, that if the midpoint was a victory then ACT II part 2 should be a crushing defeat. In The Matrix I see that the midpoint ( the Oracle tells Neo he is NOT the one ), which is not a victory. The ACT II part 2 is also not a victory because they capture Morpheus. So they are both defeats could you please explain this? My knowledge of screenwriting is not very good but I love to learn, Thank you and keep up the excellent work.
good structures but exactly the mid point was when Neo was almost unplug. and bump/pinch point 1 was when Neo was told that he wasn't the One.. would like to see more of these also could talk about bump point #1 and #2
absolutely brilliant ! sorry but mouse is a major part in the matrix movie because he is the voice of the philosophy that allows us viewers to grasp life in versus life out of the matrix construct; he is the guy that makes neo believe in being a human wherever. loved all the rest talk... wish had watched that sooner... agaain: brilliant class ! thanks.
I know this is old and you'll never read this, but the first plot point in this movie is the mother of all first plot points. It is a literal choice that reveals - quite mythologically - the world into which he must now journey.
I've been binging on your videos for a while now. Your breakdowns are clear and straightforward. Keep up the good work. From Nigeria.

could you analyze the plot structure for The Notebook? that'd be so cool
That was excellent! thanks Darious.
Thank you a lot, with your help I did an exam and a universitary thesis :-)

Fantastic - please make more Story Structure videos!

Taylor Mccorriston Thank you T. Could Atlas is a touch one. I think I answered your question on facebook already.
Breakdowns, Love it. Who are your favorite actors?
Thanks for commenting! I like to watch Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, Will Smith. Anthony Hopkins is always captivating to watch.
Your commentary is hilarious. Also, the Matrix is my favourite movie of all time.

I'm glad you enjoyed it O'Rion! That's right there was the animatrix movie. I forgot about that one. I saw it awhile back, thought it was pretty good.
Awesome, Awesome Vids. Love them.
man, you saved my ass bigtimes thank you so much!!!
Nice bro, I don't watch movies the same anymore. Now I only watch movies for camera angles, color grading, lighting technics. I gotta ask, how many times have you seen this movie?
i had to watch it atleast three times to do the breakdown. prob 7 ish.
Awesome!Love Your Channel !
Before I forget, would you ever do a breakdown of "The Room"?
I wouldn't be opposed to it lol. That was definitely a terrible movie!
"we can all relate to existing" - true, true
Hey D4Darious you mentioned in your 3 act structure video, that if the midpoint was a victory then ACT II part 2 should be a crushing defeat. In The Matrix I see that the midpoint ( the Oracle tells Neo he is NOT the one ), which is not a victory. The ACT II part 2 is also not a victory because they capture Morpheus. So they are both defeats could you please explain this? My knowledge of screenwriting is not very good but I love to learn, Thank you and keep up the excellent work.
VERY INTERESTING THANK YOU....
No thank you DJ =) Always a pleasure to hear from you sir!
incredible. 11 outta 10.
Another good 1
Thank you DirtyMic!
Isn't the phone call basically the call of adventure?
NEED MORE!
I love the whole Matrix trilogy. I'm in awe of the Wachowski siblings.
good structures but exactly the mid point was when Neo was almost unplug. and bump/pinch point 1 was when Neo was told that he wasn't the One.. would like to see more of these also could talk about bump point #1 and #2
awesome please make more!
bro... thank you so much...I had an assignment..
absolutely brilliant ! sorry but mouse is a major part in the matrix movie because he is the voice of the philosophy that allows us viewers to grasp life in versus life out of the matrix construct; he is the guy that makes neo believe in being a human wherever.
loved all the rest talk... wish had watched that sooner... agaain: brilliant class ! thanks.
roman bruni would love to put subtitles in brazilian portughese !
THAT WAS EXCITING!!
I know this is old and you'll never read this, but the first plot point in this movie is the mother of all first plot points. It is a literal choice that reveals - quite mythologically - the world into which he must now journey.
