  • During his decades-long career in stock car racing, Junior Johnson has revved plenty of engines and changed plenty of tires. But did you know he's as comfortable in the kitchen as he is in the garage? Let's head to Yadkin County and a feast for the ages.

Yesterday, December 21st, 2019 a true Southern Legend and gentleman went home to be with The Lord. Junior Johnson was truly a man for all seasons and his life was full of adventures and accomplishments. Yet, he never forgot who he was and what mattered in his life. To me, he was a true American hero.

My dad and I were wiring his new racing shop right behind that building. Every morning we would show up to work and Junior would come out, always in overalls, and say "you boys eat yet? Come on in and get some breakfast." Ate many times at that table.

I worked at a car wash in Wilkesboro. One day a black Mercedes drove up, Junior stepped out, always in overalls. A buddy and me cleaned up his car and when it was done my friend said "I'd like to have a car like this one day." Junior said, dead serious, "all it takes is money. "

this is what's lacking in today's society, this new generation of me me me, and no giving just taking.I come from a racing family my grandfather and my dad both raced the original Daytona track, and I've run dirt tracks for over 30 years and I can promise you this you won't ever find a more friendly and giving group of people than you find in racing, no matter what happens on the track it all disappears after the race, and junior Johnson is the ideal image of what racers truly are and stand for,the man is a legend and him along with cale.Ralf Earnhardt the pettys and the rest formed one of the greatest family oriented sports we have

We have a similar thing for the Indy 500 every year. There are a bunch of us that eat at the same place every morning. Hell, I make the trip back every year more for that, than I do the race.

During the early days, my nextdoor neighbor in Jersey, Al Goldstein, used to drive that moonshine from Yadkin County down to the military bases in the flatlands of the piedmont in his army five ton. He was also good friends with Junior Johnson, and his wife actually came from Yadkin too. My son and I were traveling with Al in the '90s from NJ to Fla and back to NJ, and I was looking forward to meeting Junior at his farm; unfortunately Al and my son had a disagreement, so I missed a chance to meet one of the greats. Al went to visit Junior, we stayed in the motel. Anyhow, I love what Junior has to say about the NASCAR of today.

I would bet you any amount of money if a black came up to eat they would be treated better than the regulars. White people are really not like they are stereo type. Neither are blacks, hispanics or Asians.

I met the real “Radio” (not Cuba Gooding Jr)” and the coach that took him in as well as the last living Tuskegee airman at Juniors just to name a couple. That man in the white shirt is my grandfather he loved being there every morning.

My childhood hero. Too bad PBS has gotten away from stories like this and have become the Propaganda Broadcasting Service.
