So outraged at what I had just learned, I repeatedly replayed a recording of the broadcast in an effort to comprehend the scope & significance of Loftus' accusations & spent the next 20 years self funding research to verify them. And you? [2] Albeit I watched both versions in the silent company of millions, other than Dr. Charles Kremer, it soon became apparent that I was the only private US citizen who then actively sought out, identified, uncovered the war time significance, tracked down & pressed OSI to prosecute Nazis in America. What about you? [3] Research revealed hundreds of war criminals who essentially climbed to power over the bodies of their fellow countrymen living within 45 miles of my NJ home. Former OSI Director Allan A. Ryan, Jr. speculated, "If only 2% of the 500,000 post war emigres collaborated then 10,000 Nazis entered the US." [4] 8.1990: I pressured then OSI Director Neal M. Sher to file denaturalization proceedings in federal court against Sergis HUTYRCZYK, a Koldichevo Concentration Camp guard in Nazi occupied Byelorussia, turned Somerset County, NJ resident & AT&T security guard in Piscataway. Regrettably public humiliation of Sher to do the right thing as he addressed a Philadelphia Jewish group the night before he filed it, proved both necessary & pivotal. I prepared & that evening distributed hundreds of information packets including an eyewitness photo spread wherein the Koldichevo Camp barber escapee identified HUTYRCZYK as an armed guard whose hair he often cut & shaved daily. After the war, that barber immigrated to the U.S. settling in Englishtown, NJ, 1/2 hour from HUTYRCZYK's home. The camp soon to be closed & remaining detainees killed, another guard gave him a loaded gun & told him to escape. [5] What occupation within a mini society places 1 so often/close to another's head & face such that decades later, they can recall & this 1 in fact identified them as a former client? A barber! [6] My criticisms of Sher & his side kick successor Eli Rosenbaum: (1) who, (2) the huge number OSI refused to denaturalize/deport, (3) basis for deviating from their congressional mandate, (4) case closure deals (stay & sin no more parting gifts) for Nazis akin to Let's Make a Deal, the envy of Monty Hall. [7] For the crime of publicizing criminal activities of US intelligence agencies dating back to WW 2 via 60 Minutes & The Belarus Secret, OSI threatened & for years mercilessly attacked Loftus for what Eli condemned as "kiss & tell" disclosures "instant book for the instant buck" & "I love John like a brother but he wouldn't know a Nazi if he met one." This vicious defamation/disinformation campaign devised/led by Eli ultimately earned him Sher's sedia gestatoria as director after the latter's scandal spawned dismissal for ordering the destruction & dumping dozens of boxes of evidence it had gathered on John DEMJANJUK into an adjacent McDonalds dumpster. [8] OSI naively sought info on suspects from the same agencies who recruited & slipped these Nazis into the US, hired, immunized them from prosecution & regard as protectees. Loftus' disclosures catalyzed those agencies to then stonewall OSI inquiries. Given a choice between enforcing the law & supporting OSI prosecutions vs. continuing to cover up, secrete all they knew about each & protecting them, the agencies came down on the side of enduring values & refused to cooperate. To appease those agencies bruised & humiliated by Loftus' disclosures, Ryan, Sher & Eli agreed to absolve countless war criminals along with those Americans still living who illegally smuggled them into the US. [9] At a time when OSI refused to denaturalize/deport a litany of Byelorussians, neither effort, nor opportunity to undermine Loftus' credibility, accuracy & reliability of his disclosures was spared, illuminating new cohorts of OSI's own Nazi protectees not limited to Piotra ORSA, Minister of Economics & Agriculture in the Nazi puppet government of the Byelorussian Central Council. Orsa had a phone directory listing at 7 Union Ave & SS Col. Alexander BUGALAJ of Appelby Ave, both of South River, who did not. [10] My 1st encounter with Nazi collaborators in the US occurred at age 3 then living at 4013 Harvard St. in Lake Charles. On 8.21.62 my father sold our 2 bedroom home to Arnold S. AKMENTINS, an Estonian post-war emigre who, like thousands of other Nazis, illegally entered & resettled in the US in the 1950s. As a wartime railroad engineer, he transported civilians to forced labor & extermination camps, German & Estonian troops & armaments. As a Harvard St. resident, he became a decades long McNeese policeman & student. In 1983 he became my classmate in an evening Russian History class taught by Dr. Thomas Fox, PhD, a gifted professor & Vietnam war based intelligence officer. On 1 occasion the topic of Nazi collaborators in the U.S. came up. "I'm very afraid of the INS!" he declared. I eventually discovered why. [11] During a 1982 PBS `Late Night America' program hosted by Dennis Wholey, I called & was able to question Loftus directly, the first of many conversations we would have. "I have three (3) questions." Initially Wholey protested asking for one. "How many Nazi collaborators are still living in the US?" "I like your question, what others do you have?" Wholey asked. "Where in the US are they now? What are they doing now for a living?" [12] I convinced friends in McNeese Student Government to invite Loftus as the university's annual guest lecturer. G. Gordon Liddy appeared the year before pocketing $5,000 for a pompous account of his Watergate activities in the Nixon administration. Nixon respected & protected Nazis, inviting Romanian Bishop Valerian TRIFA & war criminal to bless & open congress with a prayer. Liddy's was an enthusiastic standing room only audience in McNeese's 2,000 seat Bulber auditorium. [13] 3.25.83: Despite Lake Charles KPLC 7 airing a detailed & insightful interview of Loftus earlier that day, the presence of less than two dozen at Bulber hours later stunned me. I knew each of them by name. Loftus' preference was to fly in & speak on a Friday evening, a sacred time slot for Lake Charles bar hopping. Citing its own Friday services, even the local synagogue refused to publicize Loftus' appearance. [14] 3.29.83: 1,000s of copies of the university newspaper covering Loftus' lecture were distributed at the entrances of every campus building. My then US-Soviet Relations teacher, turned Florida based banker & rabid pro-Petliura Ukrainian nationalist whose relatives collaborated with the Nazis, together with local ROTC students he supervised, gathered unopened bundles of the paper as quickly as they were distributed & threw them into campus dumpsters. The same instructor had provided English translations for the Cyrillic lettering on more than 100 Byelorussian (St. Euphrosynia Cemetery) & Ukrainian (St. Andrews Cemetery) tomb stones of former Nazis buried in South River & South Bound Brook, NJ respectively, 8x10 B&W photos of which I gave Loftus. [15] Research revealed few if any former Nazis in the US actively hid, either their identities, residences, religious, cultural based institutions they frequented & belonged to, attitudes toward groups they once persecuted & murdered, or their accomplishments, either during, or after the war. Much of the evidence regarding their war era criminality & post-immigration whereabouts resides as untouched public records, available to whomever looked for & wanted to find it. Albeit OSI proved to be something less than diligent at gathering evidence of individual criminality, preferencing to sit back & wait for it to show up unsolicited in the mail, Loftus proved himself the exception. [16] I spent countless days in essentially empty, lineless county tax record offices & historical archives photocopying thousands of documents containing the names, addresses, immigration histories, war time titled positions, & even photographs of Hitler's uniformed henchmen in the US. Then there was the occasional denaturalization & deportation proceeding in, either one, or another federal court, wherein I was consistently one of less than a half dozen present. Where was the public? Where were the protests? Where were the outraged consciences? Not even the media bothered to show up relying instead upon OSI press releases which came to them. [17] Many nights I crawled through ethnic Eastern European cemeteries noting the identities of those who had died which led to their obituaries enumerating details of their pre, wartime & post war lives. Sundays I cruised church & cultural center parking lots throughout NJ, PA, Ohio, NY, & Illinois recording license plates later looked up by police, detectives & members of congress to whom I reported. Every few months an emigre group held a convention, opportunity to photograph attendees, record speeches & more license plates. At Romfest `88 in Cleveland Ohio a Romanian Catholic Bishop delivered an anti-Semitic joke after reading a welcome & best wishes letter received by event organizers from Howard Metzenbaum, Ohio's Jewish senator. The room was packed with & I was surrounded by more than 400 Romanian Iron Guardists & Valerian Trifa adherents, many of them likely mass murderers. [18] Most astonishing, public apathy & indifference, particularly among the religious leadership of communities identifying most strongly with the holocaust. Save for Albany's Rabbi Paul Silton, no other rabbi in the country took to the streets & sponsored public protests on the subject.
