Thanks for the video. I just picked up a TI-82 for my kids and didn't know before I bought it that it had this issue. I used a hot air station at 100C and a flat blade jeweler's screwdriver for pressure. Fantastic!
I used a clothes iron, lowest setting and used the very tip of the iron on the calculator. It was hot to the touch and I couldn't leave my finger on the iron for more than a second, but could touch the iron briefly. TI-83. WORKED!! THX
I also used a clothes iron. Lowest setting didn't work, but "Rayon" (roughly 190 C) did! Matches well with the 200 C temperature applied by the soldering iron in the video.
Thank you for the tip. I was able to fix an old TI-82 super easily. I used a temperature of 180 degrees C, maybe lower could work too, but 180 degC didn't cause any damage.
Now I'm traveling to my home after a working week in another city. I cannot wait to rescue my TI 82 with your method!! I will share the results once I've done the fix!
Glad I found this video before I used one of the other methods suggested, which was to remove the plastic ribbon tape and solder individual wires on. Your soldering iron method worked on my TI-83 & TI-83 Plus and was very easy to do. My soldering iron is temp controlled with a temperature display and I set it to minimum at 205deg C. thanks for demonstrating this method.
Watdahel: Holly Smokes, this worked! Dude, you have a mind like a mad-scientist electronics repair genius! I had this same problem with a TI-83 Plus. I was about to throw it away when I found your video and tried your soldering iron solution. And "BAM" it worked. Note: My soldering iron doesn't have temperature controls, so I had layed a couple of folds of aluminum foil over the plastic covering to keep it from melting. I then ran the iron gently over it. And to my surprise, it worked. Thanks for posting! Blessings upon you.
Hey man! Thank you. I lived in Italy, now I am in Brazil always caring my TI 68. For a long time ( was depressed) left my Ti 68 packed without use...A few days ago, I tried do use it again but it's display did not show all the numbers. I opened it trying to find out what was happening but no clue. Your video was the first and probably the last hope. Tried to solder the flat cable terminals as you sugested (used a 250°Celsius temp) and voilà, there it is, feito! Thank you very much, man!
Wow, thank you. I actually went to a thrift store and also bought some TI calculators for $3 each, the TI-81 and TI-86, both have this problem. I'll be trying this method later
i'm going to try to fix my voyage 200, having the same issue. it hasn't been switched on for over 15 years. so this trick should work. thank you for spreading the love..
Besides the fact, that this upload is already quite old: I just took my soldering iron, spent two hours of my time and slowly, carefully pressed the thermal connectors of my TI 200 back in place. I had 4-5 horizontal lines working before, now EVERY single line is working again. Genius! Thank you so much. :-)
Didn't have a temperature adjustable soldering iron so I just used it as soon as I plugged it in. Some solder fell off from a previous repair and freaked me the fuck out that I broke my calculator, but it ended up working great! Thanks.
I always liked the square-like directional pad on the TI-82 more than the TI-83 and so on. The TI-82 is an underrated graphing calculator. It can run asm programs. It's just as fast as a regular TI-83. It just has a little less RAM and lacks the asm features of the 83+.
Have you ever come across ones where the ribbon able itself was apparently deteriorated? I can bend the cable on a ti86 I have without touching the connections and the lines come and go. Great vid. Never thought of using a low setting on the iron. Iusually use a heat gun or hair drier.
Unless the cable itself has a cracked crease it's usually the ends or the contacts that have come loose. So any movement of the cable with a weak or detached connection will cause those pixels to turn on and off seemingly at random times throughout the year. Even a simple change in temperature or climate can cause it. Heat and pressure is needed to reactivate the conductive adhesive. Basically, the adhesive is impregnated with microscopic metallic beads. It's the beads that complete the junction between the cable and the board. The adhesive pulls everything together.
Good tips watdahel, got most of my verticals reconnected without burning up the ribbon. Make sure you support your right-to-repair legislation (seems like common sense but .. politics).
Sir You have done really great job, I've got the same problem with my Texsa Ti 83 . Do you think I can do it with soldering iron Antex with 18 watt. Thank you very much. indeed.
Hi Watdahel........I have a few TI Voyage 200 graphing calculators and when I do an LCD 8 bit checkerboard check everything shows but when I do an LCD 1 bit checkerboard check the checkerboard pattern doesn't show, pls help!
@@watdahel It's hard to upload a picture but I know if the display is off, it's the ribbon cable as you mention. The resolution on the 1 bit checkerboard is non existent but the 8 bit checkerboard resolution is fine. I just reinstalled the OS for the Voyages but it did nothing to improve the issue.
I would imagine the 1 bit pattern would be very small. Very small checker pattern. Increase the display contrast and use a magnifying glass if you have to. Even if it looks like just a a solid dark screen then the display should be fine. Then there is no missing pixel which you would also see in the 8 bit pattern.
@@watdahel I have a new Voyage 200 and the 1 bit checkerboard display shows clearly though! Ok..changed the contrast...it shows! Thank you Watdahel! :)
Hello! May I ask you for some help? I have a Texas Instrument TI-82 STATS. I works sometimes. Sometimes it just doesn't turn on, until I push hieps of differens button and squeeze it in different ways (I know, stupid), than its does turn on. I have changed the batteries. I had one vertical line of missing pixels and after trying your method I got more vertical and horizontal lines of missing pixels. Should I try again? Can you suggest me a solution or this may be the end of it?
That means the connections were barely making contact and you nodged them off. Repeat as I did and perhaps your not applying enough heat and pressure. Heat each pad and dwell for a good amount of time while applying slight pressure.
@@watdahel I think I ruined it completely. Now I lost almost the whole screen and I believe to have left burn marks on the tape. Probably this is not recommendable for people without experience on similar issues. I have some memories as this calculator accompanied me for almost 30 years. Can it be fixed if I take it somewhere? Thanks for your reply in advance.
@@danmartin7823 You could try heating up the iron for a few seconds and then unplug it. Notice in the video how I touched the iron with my finger to feel the heat. You should do the same to roughly get an idea how hot your iron tip is. You should be able to touch it for half a second. Your skin should not be burned. Otherwise it's too hot.
I've used a hot air gun (a specialized rework station for electronics) at 200 Celsius, and put pressure with an eraser (probably you can use a piece of plastic or something like that) to fix a similar problem in a radio's LCD screen. It worked just fine. The key here is the right temperature. If it's too high you can damage the cable and/or the screen. If it's too low it won't stick well enough.
You'll probably need to find another unit to swap the screen with. It's probably more economical to just get a new calculator. These calculators are cheap enough.
