    Personally, I refused to watch the movie when the trailer itself revealed Donna's mother to be alive in the first place. I did not mind the fact that Cher makes it look as if Donna was born when her mother was 3 years old (I can suspend disbelief to an extremely large extent and would be more than happy to pretend that her mother just looks as young as Donna due to plastic surgery). But one line that stayed with me when I watched the show onstage and when I watched the first movie was Donna telling her friends that "Somebody up there has got it in for me. I bet it's my mother" which clearly suggests that her mother was dead and she couldn't have possibly made an appearance as a living human being in the second movie. Discontinuity at its finest. They should have presented Cher as a sister or a cousin of Donna's.

    Definitely not my thing, but I’ll give the sequel this: it has an interesting idea for a plot. A main character from the previous straight up died in between movies, and the movie alternates between her past and her daughter also becoming a mom in the present. I think that’s actually a neat setup. A setup that happened because of not wanting to pay for the mother’s actress again, but a neat setup nonetheless.

  • @p0lyxena

    Cher's character ruined this movie for me.
    The Mamma Mia movies are all about Donna and Sophie and exploring their lives and experiences. Donna's Catholic mother who disowned her for getting pregnant out of wedlock was the reason Donna ended up staying on the island in the first place. Sophie is so devoted to Donna *because* she knows Donna struggled to raise her and run a business alone. Donna is so fiercely independent and refuses to rely on others for help *because* she had no one to turn to when she was younger.
    Yet in the sequel, she turns up nonchalantly with no real remorse for missing the first 25 years of Sophie's life, or for *missing her own child's funeral.* Not because of Sophie, or because of Donna's death, but because SKY finally convinced her (offscreen!!). She even tells Sophie "being a grudge holder makes you fat." She is the WORST character and her presence in the movie completely ruined it for me. I don't really care about all the continuity errors, but having the woman who caused so much difficulty and pain for the main characters get to come back and have her own sympathetic subplot and happy ending without working for it FLOORED me. That's not a grandmother/great-grandmother, that's an egg donor. They couldn't have written Cher ANY other character????

    • @Cheezbuckets
      @Cheezbuckets 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Proposal: Cher in the role as Donna’s estranged sister who stuck with their mother when Donna was disowned, but she came to regret it after she gets out from under her mother’s thumb and leans about life outside of her strict Catholic upbringing. In the intervening years, a combination of guilt, thinking Donna will be too angry to see her, and not knowing how to even find Donna has kept her away, but she finally finds some promotional material for the hotel and at last steels herself to visit and try to make amends. When she arrives, she is of course heart-broken to find out that Donna died, but she vows to fix the family rift by being there for her niece and new great-niece and shares tender stories of her and Donna growing up. Fernando can even be the guy she once rejected out of fear of her mother’s judgement, but she no longer feels shame for her feelings towards him and wants to reconcile.

    I feel the acting in general makes this movie. Yes, Lily James is the standout, but I feel everyone in the cast managed to make even the more ridiculous parts of the movie feel at least somewhat genuine. I was particularly impressed with Amanda Seyfried (who nails this more grounded and mature Sophie who feels the weight of her mother's legacy on her shoulders, so much so that I found myself rooting for her, which I never was in the original film) and Pierce Brosnan (his grieving Sam was very moving and even that little bit that he sings, he does it a way in which it's clear he's singing to himself rather than an audience, which works quite well for the emotions of the moment). I also feel the comedy works better here and I think that was mostly Richard Curtis' contributions (this is the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually after all).

      It's probably more to help the audience connect who's who across the time gap instead of be realistic. Otherwise they would have to stop and establish who's who. It's easier for the brain to go "oh, young young brunette with the sharp bob and the old brunette with the bob are the same person!" when the rest of the plot is happening.

    In theory, the half sequel/half prequel _MAMMA MIA!_ PART 2: HERE WE GO AGAIN shouldn't work. The scenes in the past show us things we were already told by the characters in the previous movie, with a couple of continuity errors (for example, the younger versions of the 3 boyfriends aren't dressed as hippies nor rock & roll fans). The scenes in present day have a couple of conflicts that, from the beginning of the movie, you can tell will be solved in the easiest way possible. As it happens with many sequels made 10 or more years later, we're shown a new chapter in the characters' lives, even if there's not a new arc, which should be the real reason to continue the story. But you know what? Thanks to the performances (mainly Lily James'), the songs and the humor, the sense of fun is more contagious than ever! The musical numbers are more visually creative this time around. It's disappointing that they use some songs that were already sung in the 1st installment, but the new cover of the title song is the best I've heard since the A*Teens version (shut up, I'm a 90s kid). Most people agreed that Pierce Brosnan was the worst singer so, this time, he only sings alone once and it's while his character is on the edge of crying. It works because he's not asked to go beyond his vocal range and because (again) he focuses on the emotion. It's heart-wrenching. You'd think that Cher (the only cast member with a music career) would be the best singer of the franchise. Especially since she's the voice behind IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME and THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (not that I don't like BELIEVE, but the excessive autotune doesn't help me prove my point). However, she's among the weakest. She's not terrible or anything, but I didn't expect her to sound like her mouth was filled with walnuts. There's a plot twist in the last part where 2 characters are revealed to have met before. Have you seen BUBBLE BOY? I don't think it's a good movie overall (and I know most people agree with me), but there's one element in it that I think it's great, which is why the movie can easily come to mind when talking about plot twists. Yes, that movie does this type of twist too, but it's not meant to be just a surprise. The revelation shows that one of the characters has hidden layers, so it's a form of development. You'd expect the movie to have a scene of the protagonist discovering this information, so the character development can be spoon-fed to the audience... but no. It's surprisingly subtle. Back to this movie. This twist doesn't work because it happens like 2 minutes after 1 of the characters is introduced, so we don't know them. We also didn't get to really know the other character by this point, despite appearing a few times before. We don't know how this reencounter affects their lives. Actually, both installments have this "We have to give as many main characters as possible a love interest by the end" attitude, even if that doesn't contribute anything.
    8/10

    The younger castings were the best I’ve ever seen. Jessica Keenan Wynn (Ed Wynn’s great-granddaughter and the original Heather Chandler in Heathers: The Musical) was *perfect* as a young Christine Baranski, and Lily James worked so well as a young Meryl Streep. And as a fan of Hugh Skinner and Jeremy Irvine, I loved them being young Harry and young Sam. This movie is Not Good, but every so often these actors made acting choices that made me really enjoy watching them. It’s a fun movie, even if it threw out details already established in the first one. I enjoy watching it with friends and laughing about it.

    I went with my grandmother and my aunt to see the first Mama Mia when it came to theatres and then after my grandmother's death in 2012 I went to see Here We Go Again with my aunt, younger cousin, and my mother who fell asleep halfway into the movie. My grandmother raised me after winning legal guardianship in court when I was a baby due and had raised me all the way from 1997 to 2012 and was more of a mom to me than the woman that gave birth to me, and I have to say Sophie seeing Donna's ghost at the end actually made me cry so I honestly cannot find it in me to hate these movies.

I was so disappointed by what they did with the Benjamin and the cup scene. Joseph's brothers offering themselves in place of their brother because they didn't want to lose another one, then Joseph revealing himself to them was always a really powerful emotional moment in other adaptations. But Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice decided "cheesy cod reggae is perfect for this moment!" Even the MANGA adaptation of the Bible got the tone right.

    Okay, here's the thing about this movie. I am literally getting two master's degrees in Shakespeare studies, and probably a PHD in Musical Theater studies. I'm specializing in dramaturgy.
    If I wanted to analyze the flaws in this movie I could. BUT, when I come home after school, after literally spending all of my time doing anylisis of theater and movies, I fucking love this movie. I was excited when I heard it was coming out! When Cher shows up, I do not think, wow this is unnecessary and random. I think "Of FUCKING CORSE CHER IS IN THIS MOVIE! SHE GONNA COME OUT AND BE CHER AND DELIGHTFUL AND THIS IS FUCKING RAD!"
    This is a movie that is fun to watch. Plain and Simple. This is not a deep movie, it is not trying to say anything, and one could argue that it is a waste of space for not being that. I could argue that! I could argue that by classical definition it's not even A Musical.
    But it is full of joy. And the overwhelming amount of ridiculous joy that I get from Cher Showing up means that I will forever enjoy this movie and never be able to defend it academically.
