    Something had to be done because those boards at tv tournaments get shredded like crazy but in my opinion the new rules are a bit harsh. My Sniper Ripple points have never damaged my board in any way but I always twist them and don't just pull them straight out.The transition to the barrel on those points is just perfect for the condor axe flights and there is not a single better flowing transitioning point out there.
    Let's just hope more company's start making smooth transitioning points that are easy on the condors.

  • @JustinMurray170fin
    @JustinMurray170fin ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Having a rounded tip was essential for the old round-wire boards (a fine point would bounce off the wire whereas the round one would tend to slide off and in)
    I also used to scuff the side of the points with an abrasive material (sandpaper/sharpening stone) for added grip - it works well, try it.

  • @brockseeman7808
    @brockseeman7808 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always try to keep mine as smooth as possible, whenever I get a burr on the tip from hitting a wire or the number ring I take a smooth mill file and smooth any burrs, saves the board tons of wear. If you're throwing a dart nice and straight, the smoothness should let it slide farthest in, keeping it in the board

  • @svwjoni
    @svwjoni ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I think the changes are way too harsh. I use the target diamond pro grip points and since playing them I havent felt any difference in the wear of my blade 6 single core. I see why they would ban the whitlock points but that is just too harsh of a change. Will be interesting to see if there is any backlash on that from the players.

    • @BS-jn9kh
      @BS-jn9kh ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe rule changes like this will prevent players like you from wasting their money on overpriced laser engraved gimmick points.. you know why they dont damage the board? Bcs they dont hold in the board better than standart black points.
      ANY point that grips in the board more, will damage it more...

    • @svwjoni
      @svwjoni ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@BS-jn9kh even if they are gimmicks they shouldn't be forbidden. fancy flights are more expensive than simple plain white ones and behave the same way than the white ones but no one would make a case for them to be forbidden.

    In my opinion the rules go to far. That they not allow players to destroy boards i can understand.
    I always repoint my darts with points that are not smooth but don’t damage the board.

    Never understood why an aggressive point was needed. Also even when only smooth points were the only points an old timer taught me how to remove my darts from the board with respect to the board. Always twist and turn as you remove it. A board courtesy technigue I guess. Still do it without thinking as opposed to yanking them out.
    Those aggressive points, they definetly mess with the bristles on a dart board and shorten its life. Always shot with smooth points. When the point started to get polished from play and start to fall out I just rubbed them with 320 grit emery and they got nice and sticky again.

    @matt_dobson0614 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use the Eagle Darts "talon" and "hawk" grip points in some of my sets. The talon grip definitely won't be legal anymore. I thought the less aggressive hawk grip might qualify, but looking at that VDI scale it seems like the points basically have to be smooth. I don't find that these points cause significantly more damage to the board than a smooth point though. They certainly don't tear it to pieces like Whitlock or Sherrock's points. Imo a max level of maybe 27 or 30 on the VDI probably would've been fine. Will be interesting to see what players are using at the Pro Tour this weekend!
    Also, reading point 2 of the new rule, does that rule out Unicorn Volute points as well? Have heard very good things about them and apparently do next to no damage to the board. Perhaps the grooves being somewhat parallel to the point length will save them.

    Interesting stuff for discussion!
    DRA rule 5.1.2 still has a lot of doubts I think... What is for example the exact definition of "generally parallel" (5.1.2 ii)? Do all the dart referees have the same "standard of decision making" regarding dart board damage by dart points? And if all players damage the board equally according to the "expert referee", just continue playing then?
    By the way: these new rules might still be finetuned, since they start to be effective from the start of the 2024 season.
    So for now : Game - still - On! 🎯

    You can still use some of the points, that have the grip but it has to be 15mm away from the tip so it doesn’t shred it. So if you busy points with grip at the top you should be ok. Not to mention now they are going to come out with tips that will meet this code. But it is a big shock that right off the bat.

    I know the Unicorns got a bad rep. Whilst not a problem for me as a light thrower, some guys in my league have no end of trouble with the Winmau Blade Sponge Boards!
    These rules seem to go a little far, don't think the return of more bounce-outs can be a positive change.
    Maybe we can go back to round-wired board with staples too?
    On a serious note, it reads to me that my Volutes would still be ok, as their groove is parallel to the Point?

    I can see the need for a call for a standard, but unlike the weight allowance for darts, the point standard is a bit stringent. I’d die if Whitlock switched to 50g darts with the first 15mm “clean” on the point followed by death. Tail up dart throwing is about to become the standard.

    • @WorldwideDarts
      @WorldwideDarts  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. The weight "rules" are idiotic aren't they? It used to be a 50 gram max and I think it's been lowered to 42g or something like that. Like anyone is ever going to use a dart that heavy. Hell, Ryan Searle is the oddball out and he uses "only" 32 grams. Nowhere near the max limit. Yes, these point rules seem harsh imo. Strict anyway

    I wonder if this going to be the end of Silver points all together. The first thing I do with any new darts I buy is re-point them with 38/40mm points. Mostly I use black points but I do have some darts that Silver points just look way better to the setup. With the Silver points tho, I 100% of the time use sandpaper on them and scuff the hell out of the points. Silver points (as you already know) are trash at staying in the board. A question I have is, does a silver point that has been scuffed with sandpaper not qualify under these new rules. I would think they would be illegal now. If I made my living throwing darts there is no way I would trust a standard Silver point that has not been scuffed. Thank You WWD for passing along this new rule change. I love you work. Cheers.

    at first i thought that since everyone has to follow the same rules, it's fair. who cares points destroy boards, they are pros and have sponsors give them boards. But on further contemplation this rule punishes the people who have a softer lob kind of throw. They could get away with those danglers by using grooved points, but no more. Now you're putting the players who throw soft lobs at a disadvantage. Do they think it's an unfair advantage for players to use aggressive points since they stick better in the board? So what the rules used to permit it so everyone could do it. Kind of a dumb change if you ask me

    These guys play on premium boards and aggressive points probably aren't needed. However, different story for us mere plebeians that play a lot of pub darts where the boards are more often than not beat to hell. Twice it happened to me that my game winning shot hit the double bull and fell out. Give me a decent board and I'll gladly swap out my Diamond points.

I don't care if the dartboard gets used and abused its supposed to get ruined. Not happy with this rule at all. Get points that are an extra 15mm longer and smooth and you are sorted ? It is only the the first 15mm of the point that the rules effect ; I would doubt any one uses the entire length of their points as a grip area . Also am I right thinking that the PDC has no control of non professional leagues regulations , or any other league at all ? I don't think us amateurs need worry . If you really get paranoid that the manufacturers will stop producing 'board wreckers ' go and buy a few sets as spares . If enough folk rushed out and bought up the stock of the points I bet the factories would be rushing to make more of them !

As we can see in lot of matches, dropped darts can cost u a lot, like matchdarts or can cost u a lot of points which can cost you a leg. And now if players cannot use points with "grip" it will be clownfiest at the board, i hope they will add one extra judge for pick uping darts. :D
