Mt Katahdin via the Knife's Edge is one of my top 3 mountain hikes. The approach up Pamola was an amazing scramble, the Knife's Edge was epic and the views were incredible. I am so glad I spent an extra day after my Allagash Wilderness Waterway trip: th-cam.com/video/P5NZx2y8KEc/w-d-xo.html
I’ve been across the Knifes Edge several times but the first was the most exciting. We went up from Roaring Brook via Chimney Pond and Dudley to the top of Pamola. The Dudley trail was a great scramble but it’s been closed for several years now due to a slide and unstable conditions. Then the daunting Chimney! About midway across we came upon a family with 2 kids who were practically skipping along without any fear, the mother calmly following, and the father on his butt scooting very carefully. Hilarious! It became my favorite hike and still is many years later.
I was definitely impressed with this hike. The terrain and exposure were some of the best I have been on. I wish I would have filmed me going up and down the chimney. It might have been the sketchiest part of the hike.
I hiked Katahdin in 1998, also from NY, but back then, it was first come, first serve with the parking. No reservations necessary. I hiked up via the Appalachian Trail, side tracked to do the Knife Edge, then down via the Cathedral Trail. I also picked a beautiful day, August 16, crystal clear, no fog or rain on the summit. It had been on my bucket list and I figured at age 45, I wasn’t getting any younger. When summited, there was a couple who’d hiked the whole way in time to celebrate their 20th anniversary, so everyone there got to join in a champagne toast! Last summer my nephew and his son did the same hike. The only down side was that despite being slathered in sunscreen, I was red as a boiled lobster the next day!
Great story, my friend passed on a tradition of a shot of whiskey or tequila. I have shared it with my sons. Kahtadin is a great mountain! See you outside!
I'm pretty sure they have a zero tolerance no alcohol on the mountain rule. I recall when Scott Jurek broke the AT speed record someone in his party broke out the champagne and Scott got a ticket for it. So probably best that guy didn't bite on your traditional celebration shots. This route is on my bucket list for sure... after I do the trap dike - oh yeah, and after I finish my 46 next week.
I hiked it in 1998 and met a couple who finished the AT in time for their 20th anniversary. They had a bottle of champagne which they shared with six others on the summit. Nobody got in trouble. I do think things were a bit looser back then as reservations weren’t necessary for parking. It was first come, first serve. They didn’t make you register although you could. I did, because I was doing it solo. There were no smartphones, and even if there had been, I doubt the signal in Baxter was very good.
That was awesome Mike! Another one for the list for sure. Very cool to see those guys finishing the AT! My wife and I are looking to possibly head to Acadia/Bar Harbor Labor Day week. May have to squeeze in Katahdin.
Thanks Mark, Katahdin is a long way from Acadia, but worth it. I was not expecting to see AT finishers, but it was a special moment to be able to meet and photograph them.
Love the video man! I am planning on hiking Katahdin in a month or two and just wanted to clarify, Helon Taylor leads to keep ridge which leads to Pamola peak correct?
@@OutsideChronicles Knife edge , How wide is the trail. Been to angels landing which parts are 3 feet wide. Was trying to get a comparison. And how scary it really is. Headed to Baxter in October.
@@NBay_ I have not done Angel's Landing, but I do not think the Knife's Edge is as narrow. I would not do it in the rain or a very windy day. It looks narrower in the video than it really is. There are a few narrow, steep spots, but not bad. The chimney is much steeper and more exposed in my opinion.
@@mradomski Thank you for the info.. Just trying to plan ahead on what trail to take and of course watching for weather conditions. Im not that brave to trek knifes edge in bad weather …

One of my favorite too.
Now this is a hike!! So much exposure, and the views must of been incredible. Cool shots of the ridge and knifes edge

I just climbed it last weekend. Great video. Knife's Edge was def the best part
Awesome, hope you had clear skies.
Thanks for this terrific and inspiring video! We typically stick with hikes in ADK and the Whites, but I added Mt Katahdin to the list!
You will not be disappointed. The mountain and hike is incredible and the North Woods of Maine is beautiful.

Cool hike dude, I'm hoping to get up there some day.
You will love it. Definitely one of the best summits I have experienced. Make sure you check with the park rules and reservation system before hiking.

So what are the other two of your top three? Inquiring minds want to know 😁
@@markrichmond7859 I knew some one would ask. I think Haystack is up there.
DANG!! Nuts I had a smile on my face that whole time!! I've seen that before but this was great! Very cool footage man. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you! If you could not tell, I was smiling to whole time too. It was a very memorable mountain.
@@OutsideChronicles im sure it was! Good for you. Keep posting videos too!!
@@dirtbagoutside You bet brother, love making them.
To the guy at the end. Pa-MOE-la. 🙂 1st guy nailed it

Cool, it is an amazing hike. Helon Taylor takes you to Pamola, then the down climb/up climb of the chimney to Knife's Edge to Baxter Peak.
Surprised you did not hook in Katahdin Hamlin on the way out. So if you want all NE 115 you have to go back.
I know! I was a bit time constrained. I am going back to paddle the Allagash next summer. I’ll pick it and North Brother up then. See you outside!
Woo, they weren't joking when they called it The Knife's Edge!
It was sweet approach to the summit. The down climb and up climb on the Chimney was also memorable.
Geography very important your Chanel I like best idea and nature .map Lesion good
Nice video. You tore that shit up! 👍
Thanks! See you outside!
Did you shoot this with the ZV-1?
No, I shoot all of my hikes and paddles with a GoPro Hero 8 with a windslayer. I use the ZV-1 for my tutorial and gear review videos.
Looks great up there, another spot added to the list 😂
I was amazing, highly recommend Baxter State Park
How many miles was the loop?
It was about a 6.5 mile loop. Are you climbing Kahtadin soon?
Great info
Kahtadin is amazing, are you planning a trip? See you outside!

Amazing footage at the summit! Looks a tad sketch... haha.
Could be sketchy under adverse conditions, but enjoyable when blessed with a beautiful day.
@@OutsideChronicles not saying I wouldn't do it. Might have to one day!
