    I hiked the knife edge alone in 1996. There was a moment when I said to myself "You got yourself up here, now get yourself down". It was a life lesson.

    A group of 4 of us climbed Cathedral trail in early September. We climbed in pairs. My hiking partner and I got to the summit first. . He wanted to do the Knife Edge and come down Helon Taylor. but after discussing with the Ranger, she didn't recommend it. Despite clear weather when we got to Baxter Peak, the clouds on the Knife Edge were exactly like in your video within 15 minutes. Reduced visibility and wet conditions. We waited for about an hour for the other two and they wanted to go on the Knife Edge despite the ranger's warning. So my hiking partner and I didn't, argue with them and came down the Saddle trail. At Roaring Brook we waited two hours for the other two. It turns out they did about 5 min on the Knife Edge and turned around because of the weather and came down Saddle. I had done Cathedral-Knife Edge-Helon Taylor 10 years ago with an experienced hiker (AT thru hiker) and I know the Knife Edge was tough on a nice day, especially after climbing Cathedral. We were lucky to have great conditions. Here is our video from 10 years ago in case you are interested: (my friends fooled around with tilting the camera for more dramatic effect at some point): th-cam.com/video/m_UKUYWRGHA/w-d-xo.html

    I did this 39 years ago when I was in prime condition. Had just returned from an adventure in Alaska the year before. The "Knife's Edge" was all I wanted and hoped for and more. I had much better weather in September and could see for miles.

    Thanks for this video. My daughter and I just hiked Knife Edge this past week. Most of the trail ended up like it was at the end of your video. Could not see a thing. It was CRAZY!!! We are both very proud of ourselves but it was scary and dangerous. Advise to those thinking about hiking Knife Edge. Take your time , be in decent physical shape and if you are afraid of heights do not go! Again thanks for the video, we were so scared we didn't take any pictures.

    Congrats - best vid on TH-cam on the Knife Edge. You've supplanted the GoPro one from 2012, beautiful framing! I've been climbing that route (always in reverse to your direction) dozens of times since I was a kid. Last hiked it the month after you in 2018. Watching this on my 4k TV brings back memories (and some knee pains) and made my wife leave the room!

    One of the better KET flicks...for some reason, it really captures the feel of the hike...not overly exaggerated by usual GoPro distortion, but still showing the drop and slope. Thanks for the true to life soundtrack. That's what it sounds like. Missed the usual raven antics and quorks...

    I climbed this mountain in the driving rain. The only advice I can give any soon to be climbers is bring your all weather gear because it changes quick , no matter how hot it is at the bottom it’s cold at the top, and give yourself enough time. This is a long hike so get moving you don’t wanna be up there in the dark. It’s all worth it though when you hit the top it’s breathtaking and to be up there in the clouds it’s a really cool experience.

      A good place to check weather is NOAA's "rec report" for mountains. Gives weather by elevation in the mountains.

    Not sure why people are wondering what kind of recording equipment he used/why some are thinking it’s a drone. It’a most likely a helmet-mountain GoPro on a gimbal. There may be some video stabilization in post as well. Also, a drone would not fly that close to a person or to those rocks when in follower mode. And you’d have to be insane to even attempt to fly a drone in that wind.

      Research "bug season [insert state here]" to see when bugs are out in NE states. Black flies usually only hang around a few weeks, and mosquitos are not bad most of the year. Bugs were not bothersome this day, and when I hike NH mountains mid July through April, they are not a nuisance either.

      We took Helon Taylor Trail/Keep Ridge up, to Knife Edge, to Baxter Peak. I recommend taking same way up, and when I do hike again, I will take same route. We couldn't finish Hamlin Peak to Hamlin Ridge Trail down because storms came in so we cut out via Saddle Trail. Saddle Trail (lower portion, not tabletop) sucks big time, and Cathedral Trail looks just as bad. I'd avoid those if you can. So if you can pull it off, take Helon Taylor, Keep Ridge, Knife Edge to Baxter Peak; then Saddle to NW Basin over to Hamlin Peak; then Hamlin Ridge to Chimney Pond down.

    • @LeviDunn
      @LeviDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hike is hard, but going up I didn't feel like it was that bad for the amount of elevation gain you do. Pamela to Chimney Peak to Baxter Peak along Knife Edge is the most technical trail I've done in New England, but also the most fun. Hopefully it's dry for you when you go, as I imagine going down any of the trails when it's wet would suck big time.
