This isn't pedestrian infrastructure, this is car infrastructure. This isn't designed with the convenience or safety of pedestrians in mind, this is designed with the convenience of motorists in mind.

OK now a little confusing. Tells you on flashing yellow to prepare to stop and then solid yellow to stop? After crossing then if no one in the crosswalk you can proceed to go with flashing red? Isn't that backwards. We slow on yellow and STOP on red, regardless if its flashing or not!!

Yeah, according to national DOT standards, this video has that incorrect. The flashing yellow is to get your attention that a pedestrian has activated the signal, and the signal is about to go through the sequence... just like any flashing yellow light... it means caution. The steady yellow light, just like a steady yellow light on a normal traffic light, means "prepare to stop, the light is about to change red". You are not required to stop until the light changes to steady red. Once the flashing red starts, you treat it like a stop sign. Come to a full stop. Then, if the crosswalk is clear, you may proceed cautiously. www.statesboroga.gov/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/HawkPedCrossing.jpg

Were they really screwed up on Hawk signals all over the country is the alternating left right red where they want you to stop and proceed if clear where as alternating left right red has always meant stop do not proceed until lights are extinguished which is used on railroad crossings.

Pedestrians always must keep an eye out for cars at all traffic controlled crosswalks as there are millions of blind drivers that will plow them down!!

When it comes to the flashing red, I will not go until the HAWK signals turns off completely. Cars and bikes crossing the intersection had intersection have the same right of way as pedestrians, and I would rather avoid a collision, so I will not go until the flashing red lights turn off. If other drivers behind me don't like that, tough, I don't care. Safety is first with me, not matter who behind me gets irritated

What is the advantage of this VS a regular trafic light? I am confused.

    • @ArcticFire23

felixantoinetremblay pretty sure it's just more convenient for cars. I'm not sure it's any safer than a regular light.

In most jurisdictions, a flashing red light (as opposed to a solid one) acts like a stop sign so one can proceed if there is no pedestrian in the crosswalk. Otherwise a car would remained stopped till the light changed. The light operates on demand rather than a timer so traffic only stops when needed.

All the city of Tallahassee knows how to do is add traffic lights on every block. They have ruined Tennessee St, Monroe st and when the power goes out so does the Tallahassee police department. During hurricane hermaine, the traffic lights that were working, there were 5 tpd officers standing and laughing in that parking lot. We rode further up N. Monroe and low and behold there were 2 more sitting at that gas station where that traffic light was working. We went down Tennessee ST and seen no TPD where trees were down. I finally called LCSO who did respond and blocked the street from the tree that had fallen with power lines down. My question is what was the 7 tpd officers doing standing outside their cars laughing. When are the people going to realize that the LCSO does more for the citizens of this city/county. The red head officers doing her nails at a fsu game and had traffic so congested and when she did start doing something she did it with one finger. So many people were yelling at her. I was afraid someone was going to attack her. I am handicapped but I would have done anything to safe her even though she was worthless. I would help any tpd officers in trouble because I respect them. But they fail us in many ways. LCSO SERVE better than tpd. Sorry tpd, your so concern about getting home after fsu games, you run lights and let others do the same.

Since the signal is not lit when not pressed, how do you know when the signal is defective?
