    We've spent over a month with all three of Apple's M1 Macs, and one of the main issues is that you only get two Thunderbolt ports, especially on the Mac Mini.
    However, this accessory from OWC fixes that problem by giving you two extra Thunderbolt 4 ports, for a total of four available ports.
    On top of that, you also get an extra USB-A port which is actually faster than the one on the M1 Mac Mini.
    And if you have an M1 MacBook, this hub also supplies 60W of power with a single cable, replacing your power brick while at home.

    External SSD such as Samsung T7 and Sandisk Extreme are slower (up to 30% reduction in performance) when connected to this device on a Mac M1. Some USB flash drives are 50% slower when connected to this hub. Some video adapters do not work. However the same devices connected to a Caldigit TS3 Plus do not exhibit this behaviour and the SSD are fast and the video adapters work .. Tested on a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Air M1. When I googled this I see a lot of people are seeing these same issues. I am now worried other devices may not work or have reduced performance. OWC tech support confirmed what I am seeing and will say its a Mac M1 issue, however why does the Caldigit TS3 Plus work?

  • @marcoschram222

    I still think the Caldigit TS3 Plus is a more versatile dock, especially for M1 MacBooks seeing it also has Ethernet, DisplayPort and SD card reader built in 😊 it is more expensive though.. this looks like a nice dock for Mac Mini for a better price

    Like, in this video, it shows that the M1 Macs have 2 controllers, and each controller can have up to 2 ports!
    They just only have one port per controller!
    They should have tried out 4 ports to make sure that they worked before releasing it to the public!
    It’s sad that we have to buy an external accessory to get more ports...
    Let’s just hope that they include 4 ports for the M1X model!

    I think the reason for Sabrent Rocket performance anomalies is due to thermal throttling. I experienced wildly different results using BM disk test with the 1TB Q version and sent it back. The OWC Envoy enclosure for TB3 only uses two of the four PCIe lanes and returns consistent 1200 MB/S for read and writes. Looking at your spreadsheet, it seems USB-C/A is where the 100 MB/s slowdown is prevalent. This has been (I think) a confounding issue for much of the analysis into this M1 external SSD performance problem and I greatly appreciate your raw data and exploration. You guys rock!

      I'm sure there were lots of constraints & they hit a deadline & decided it still made sense to release the mini w the MBA on launch. it's probably also part of the reason they discounted it $100. I'd be surprised if they don't address this on the next rev - it cost them money def to mold a separate mini shell with 2 ports when they could have gotten away w reusing the old shell 100%!

    • @williamp6800

      Because, just like there were two variations of the Intel Mac Mini, there will be two variations of the Apple Silicon Mac Mini, with the second using an M1x.(or similar name). When it arrives in Stage 2 of the transition, You’ll see more cores, more ports, and with luck, the return of 10Gb Ethernet.
      But don’t expect any ports on the front. They could have been doing that for the last decade and didn’t. I don’t expect that to change.
      That chip will also power the replacement for the higher end MacBook Pro13”, the MacBook Pro 16”, and the lower end iMacs.
      I expect it to arrive sometime between March and WWDC in June.
      And then it will on to stage three...

    Possible related benefit:
    Another channel suspects that the Bluetooth issues the M1 Macs have been having is due to the Bluetooth controller doing double duty as the USB controller. If you can use one of these hubs and avoid connecting anything to the USB ports on your Mac, supposedly the Bluetooth issues vanish.

    If i remember right from an interview with Larry, the new M1 Macs do not have TB4. They have USB4/TB3. There isn’t the same technical specs as TB4 or you’d be able to hook up more displays than what they support. This may change with the new M2 or M1X ones coming.

    • @glenallan6279
      @glenallan6279 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup... And the M1s don’t use TB4, hence not all the support. Here’s looking to the next round of ASi to see if they do go full TB4.

    • @glenallan6279

      Speeds are same between 3 and 4. I think the main thing is that it (The M1) only uses 2 PCIe lanes instead of 4 which would still give good speeds but at up to 2500MB/s (per port). And it doesn’t support the required amount of Display port connections, which is why less monitors on the M1.
      Anyway, it’s not about the hub, it’s about the Thunderbolt controller in the M1 Mac. The hub seems a great way to expand it for sure!

    • @johngwheeler
      @johngwheeler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the hub won't give you more video outputs, in the same way that connecting an M1 Mac to 2 external monitors via the TB3 connectors also doesn't work. The only solution I'm aware of for getting multiple monitors are:
      1) On the M1 Mini, use 1 x TB3 port plus the HDMI port for the second monitor
      2) Use a dock that supports DisplayLink (video over USB), to connect to multiple monitors (which is what I do).

    Pay close attention to the host (computer-side) requirements for this solution. In other words, as cool as this is, if you only have TB3 on Windows, sorry, but you're outta luck with this particular solution. The only TB3 machines this will work with are Intel Macs with MacOS 11 Big Sur. At least that's what I inferred from reading the OWC docs on this unit a week or two ago. If I'm wrong here - someone please confirm - and I'll order one right now for my 2019 MacBook Pro with Catalina! :) [Many of my music production apps aren't yet updated for Big Sur so I'm stuck on Catalina for a while. DOH.]

    The port placement is a bit uncomfortable... I would want 2 C port and 1 A port on the front, and the DC, uplink, and 2 c port on the back so everything could easily tuck away while giving me 2 c port to hot-plug when I need it. If that is coming out, I would drop $200 easily for that.

    It would be very interesting to see how this hub performs with a tb ssd + tb sound sound interface for the musicians. The M1 Mac could be extremely interesting to a music performer that need extra disk space for sound libraries than the standard Macbook provides if it will not ruin the low latency of the tb sound interfaces. Most sound interfaces do only require tb 2 but the key reason to choose them is the much better latency vs usb interfaces

    I don’t think the TB/USB4 situation is going to be this messy again with the next Apple Silicon Macbooks. I think the reason the M1 can’t drive two 4K 50Hz displays is because the M1 is essentially the A14X chip that is rumored to be going into the next iPad Pro, and they did this to streamline their M1 & A14X production line because pandemic. Next year we’re hopefully going to get proper Thunderbolt 4 ports and we’ll be able to drive two 4K 60Hz displays from the two TB4 ports directly on our next Apple Silicon Macs instead of having to buy a hub. Speaking of which, can you test if we can plug in two 4K 60Hz displays into this new OWC Hub next if you have two 4K 60Hz displays in your hand? The real question is if Apple really has two Thunderbolt controllers integrated into the M1 why did they not wire both of them to the two Thunderbolt ports and leave us in a janky situation like this?

    Received this Hub today from OWC but after running tests with Mac Mini M1 I do not get this speeds. Even changed out the cable with one of those 10gb cables purchased from Amazon at a cost of $26. Now when I get on my MacBook Pro 16” I get extremely fast speeds. Testing with the Sandisk 500gb usb-C 3.2 Gen 2 which is suppose to get up to 1050MB/s. Get about half of that speed on Mac Mini M1 via hub. On MacBook Pro get nearly 900MB/s. Go figure.

In theory it should work as both are 20V with around 4-5,5 A. I know the original Thunderbold Hub Charger has 110w but 87w should be enough for most use cases plus you dont have ro carry that monster brick! :) the only thing i could not find is a dc adapter for this specific power input. It seems like a special Plug. If this OWC TB Hub could be used with a Macbook 87w (15") or 97w Charger (16") with the right USB- C to DC Adapter...this would be Huuge!!!
