Hey! Im guessing you use CentOS? Or, do you not use mp4 footage? I'm having problems using Resolve, because my mp4 footage is not important with video... could you point me in the right direction? Resolve seems to be the best switch for me from Premiere, but I cant solve this simple problem.

@@carbolemons8810 Free version don't support h264 codec in Linux. Resolve use built in h264 codec in Windows and macos. You can transcode the video in DnxHD (1080p) or DnxHR (4K) by using ffmpeg. Or buy the studio version.

Your point about Davinci resolve not having separate programs for compositing (like after effects) and audio (like audition) is surely a non issue given that both of those functions exist within resolve in the fusion and fairlight tabs respectively.
by all means have a discussion about whether Fusion is as powerful as after effects but completely ignoring it seems strange.

I don't know if Lightworks should've been in a top 5 seeing as how the free version is limited to only 720p while Shotcut can actually export up to 8K.
Speaking of Shotcut, I'm very confused about your comments regarding it. You say you "don't like it very much" but the only negatives you list are a layout you don't like even though the layout in Shotcut is completely customizable and that when you drop a clip it plays automatically in the preview window. I have never experienced a clip playing automatically in the preview window as any sort of problem considering you can easily pause it. It's not going to take you by surprise because if you are dropping the clip into the program then you would already be expecting the clip. It's not like clips start playing randomly by themselves in Shotcut while you are editing. Were those the only reasons why you "don't like it very much"?
Also, you say the program is "easier" and "has less of a steep learning curve" than other NLEs but you place Blender higher even though Blender's video editor workflow is about the most unintuative one can possibly imagine. Blender's video editor doesn't even have a proper bin or playlist for media which is quite a basic feature for a video editor to have. Also, Shotcut supports almost every codec out there while Blender has limited codec support which is surprising considering it is one of the most well funded free and open source programs out there.
Blender is a fantastic program but it's clear the video editor is the least developed portion of it. That's why I prefer Shotcut for video editing. However, I would like to ask you something since you are very experienced with Adobe Premiere Pro. How much of the capabilities of Premiere Pro would you estimate can be achieved in Blender's video editor?

thanks for this video! im planning on somehow migrating to linux cause why not? im just the type of person who wants to experiment on stuff, but sometimes scared to do so.. i’ve been a windows user since birth, and i just wanted to try something new, and not within my comfort zone. this video has helped me know what to use in exchange for a cracked version of premiere pro, in which i’ve been using mainly for my videos as of this moment, and i would really want to see the best alternatives possible that can still feel like im editing from premiere pro. somehow, i stumbled upon kdenlive through a special linux distro called ubuntu studio, which has all the tools for photography, video editing, and more, but i don’t know why i haven’t got the feel for using this.. im still having a hard time learning how to migrate all of my stuff to linux because im really planning to.. i just really wanna feel some change when i use my pc, and i wanted to have opinions for all my windows 10 needs, like, productivity, editing videos and pictures, and even programming.. i also don’t know why i even considered switching to linux in the first place and i still can’t think over what to do.. i honestly don’t know where to start for asking advice when it comes to going to linux, even though i have watched a ton of videos talking about linux and what’s best for you.. but i feel like my primary goal for switching to linux is to give up windows entirely, and just to have a feel of something new.. i just really wanna get used to linux so badly, and i don’t know where to begin.. but otherwise, this was helpful in terms on how do i edit my videos professionally in linux, and this had already given me ideas for software i never knew about, cause i was stuck using adobe for a long time now.. i really hope i can get used to the change and that i become part of the linux master race anytime soon.. besides all that, thanks for your ideas on what to use for video editing that’s not adobe premiere pro, especially coming from a channel i know that uses much of premiere pro ecosystem.. i also hope you make tutorials on how to use the aforementioned video editors for your current tutorials in using premiere pro.. sorry for ranting my whole dilemma in one whole comment wherein its just for praising this video and giving insight to new and unheard of software.. i’ll be gladly to try it and i hope i get used to it.. anyways, thanks a lot!!

would be nice to get DR running, I have a desktop that had windows on it and i was running Davinici Resolve without issue. I have loaded Linux Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS and working nice. I downloaded the DaVinci_Resolve_16.1.1_Linux and put the makeresolvedeb_16.1.1-3.sh into the folder and ran it how everyone online is showing you how to do it. I get a deb file and run that without issue and then when i start Davinici it shows in the top section like its trying to start but nothing happens. Has anyone else got it to work in this setup? thank you all in advance! Wayne

You should get a Nvidia GPU with 8GB or more VRAM. 2070 might be sweet spot. Or if you can wait, then 30xx series. You can also use proxy to edit 4K videos. You only need actual footage if you do color grading. If you are using free version in Linux, you need to transcode the video to DnxHD (1080p) or DnxHR (4K). You can use ffmpeg for that. Specially handy for batch transcoding. You can also use www.shutterencoder.com/en/ to transcode. Also Premiere prep youtube channel use Linux(Ubuntu or CentOS) and Resolve for video editing. You may want to look into that.

You totally forgot how much of a pain it is to get Davinci to work on Linux. Unless you have very specific hardware and software, (CentOS, Nvidia GPU, Xorg, and all the specific drivers) than running Davinci on Linux is going to be a real pain. Also, the free version on Linux doesn't support many video and audio file formats that the windows version does, most notably MP4.
    Great video nonetheless.
