I love Margot's non-political honesty during her interviews. I saw her on David Letterman (at the time promoting Superman IV) and mentioned she still thought Superman: The Movie was the best from the series (written within the context of promoting her current film from the series rather than hindsight of how 'IV' was a dud!)
If you ever see her doing publicity for this movie she may seem a little off as she's basically publicising a film she thinks is terrible. Check out the 2006 documentary "The Curse of Superman" to see what she REALLY thought about Superman IV.
Superman 4 was a step to far. The costume looked very dated by 1987 and Reeve and Kidder and the rest of the original cast looked too old. Obviously the cheap budget made the film a disaster.
Chris Reeve looked too slimmed down for the role, which was seemingly reflected in his appearance in the suit (much less mighty looking than in Superman III th-cam.com/video/xrggI-ISIQc/w-d-xo.html),. His hairline (which I found out he wore a hair piece throughout the films) looked odd. If Cannon Films didn't hijack half the budget for other projects we would've gotten a much stronger product.
Brendan, I like you take on this. Great comment about the costume at that point in 1987. I saw this film in the theater back then, and there was zero appetite for it. It was just “there” with little interest.
