I had Magnavox oddsey 2. It was a really good game system back when I was a kid.

I don't recall every playing on one myself. I was on the Atari mostly. I did get hooked on Intellivision's Tron - Deadly Discs though. Funny how many independent gaming consoles came out together during that time.

Tearing stuff apart to see what's inside has been part of life for a long time now.
Don't plan on stopping any time soon. 😁

I remember tearing something apart at the age of 6... I was so excited I got it back together again. It still worked... but I had 2 screws left, and I did not know where they went. :) Give me a few tools, and I will gladly make a mess. Thanks for checking out the video. I will have a phone system video up next. Probably early next week.

Did I hear you say “…As a scrapyard…”? Did you start a scrapyard?

I have a company for this now :). Been a bit. How are your tree trimmings going?

@@badideametals haha, I like that. I also always rummage through containers to look for valuable things. my wife is then ashamed of me, lol. Maybe you can show your scrapyard? Tree business i going well 👍🏻

@@Boompjekappen_nl lol ... my wife does not love to hear that I have been in the garbage of other people to find some cool things :) And yes, I can show the scrap yard. It is not very big. I am looking for a new place to have the yard, but land prices went up by 10x in the last year to 2 years. So, I work off the back of my truck most of the time. As I pick up interesting things, I record the video to share here. But in general, have a good amount of scrap to process this winter.

That must've been one of the last revisions, it looks made a lot cheaper than the ones I've seen so far.
Has a bunch of games that are still fun, with some really addictive ones too. Not as good as the Atari though, but the joysticks are better, which is surprising given how dirt cheap these were made (my joysticks look the same from the inside).
So the NEC 8048 is the CPU. It's actually not a CPU, but a microcontroller with RAM and ROM and I/O built in, so basically a predecessor of the Atmega / Arduino.
The chip right to it is 6810 RAM which is a meager 128 bytes, but these are getting pretty hard to find and are used a ton in old pinball machines.
The chip below it is an Intel graphics chip. Yes, Intel made video chips that far back. It's incredibly primitive though, but as I said, that doesn't mean it's not fun to play.
NOTE that the CPU also has the BIOS for the console burnt on it, so you can use this 8048 only in an Odyssey² / Videopac / G7000 console. Don't mix'em up!

      Really good information :)
I started paying attention to hardware about the time NEC was making monitors and video equipment, and Intel had already moved over to CPUs. Funny that the 8048 is the CPU (ish). I still have the board. I wonder if there is a good place to post it for the parts that can be reused (even if they don't get transplanted into another Odyssey.
Thank you for your comment :) I love learning more about the hardware.

@@badideametals "CPU (ish)"? It's the CPU, (1/3rd of) the RAM and the operating system all in one chip. OK operating system is stretching it to the breaking point, but as I said, it's got the console's BIOS with a ton of convenience routines for placing graphics and playing music, as well as the pixel data for the charset iirc. Wonder why the sprites on all the early games look the same? Wonder why the music and sound effects in all the early games are similar or identical? They didn't come with the game cart - they're on the console. Also, the "SELECT GAME" screen every early and most but not all later games show up is in there.
The RAM can be reused in many pinball machines and some home computers (the TI 99/4), I don't know if the GPU has been used anywhere else and the CPU is baked to be an Odyssey² CPU and can't be used for anything else unfortunately. These are One Time Programmable.
