    2:00 I believe judging a broken panel by measuring "Open Circuit Voltage" is cheating yourself - and in the case of the guilty installer, your customer. Open voltage does not tell you much about the remaining power generation capacity of a broken panel, so when the panel is loaded, the power generation capacity is the one you should pay attention to measuring. The current that the panel is capable of delivering after the glass breaks down is the real thing - not the voltage. 3:48 Why don't you move the second panel further? Now you have a measly 6" wide Walkway between your two panels, and you really have to balance so you don't fall over one or both of them. I don't understand this kind of stupidity.

    what a waste man the amount of gold u get of that is not worth it man i have recovered a ton of gold from stuff like this i got alot of gold bars and silver ur better off selling the ram bro your not getting no 600$ worth of gold hahahahahaha i recover the most gold from computer parts made in the early 90s they had thick gold plating now adays not so much i also make my own nitric acid from scratch

    • @badideametals
      @badideametals 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My experience with RAM recovery has been pretty close to what I said in the video. DDR3 is pretty good to recover from. That RAM may not get $600 ... it is an estimate, but the last run I did got me over $1K ... but I did not count the sticks... just the weight of the chips. And that did not include the fingers. But at the end of the day, the machine was saved for me to do just this with it. It was an old enterprise machine that was to be dismantled for parts. So, it is now dismantled...

      I am glad you sub'd too :) To answer as many questions at once as I can: - I have been programming computers since I was 8 ... ya, that labels me as a nerd. I was building computers at 15. I graduated school before the Pentium 3 came out, so building computers meant (back then) that I had to be able to recognize ports, chips, and card slots for compatibility. - I went on to be a hardware and software tech for a help desk while getting my CS (Programming) degree. My first job out of school was to work for 2 companies getting servers configured and maintained as well as other hardware repair duties. - Now I kind of do a little of everything, including recycle ... Most things I knew before starting the channel... many things I learned as I have been going. When I identify things incorrectly, there are enough smart people that help me in the comments ... I am grateful for those who call out the correct identity of things when I slip up. I have a server teardown I am posting here soon. I hope to post Friday. Then a gold recovery to edit and post. Followed by an Apple M1 that went nunts and needs to be openned up. That one may be interesting too ... that is for next week.

Hydrochloric Acid is also called Muriatic Acid and can be picked up at home improvement stores near the paints departments. If picking it up directly is tough, look on ebay. Some of my best providers were on ebay until they got bought by bigger companies. I am sorry if I did not grasp the purpose of your comment. Thank you for leaving one :)

    After 2 years of this repair, how have the panels held up? Has anything happened to the clear coat after being the >120F temps the panels can get to day-in/day-out??

    • @badideametals
      @badideametals หลายเดือนก่อน

      They still are in good operating condition. I don't put too much load on them anymore. I had to run power out to my shed so I could run a greenhouse fan 12 to 18 hours a day. I did not want to risk my plants to a small capacity battery pack. So I use it for lighting. I have not had to resurface or treat the coating since recording this video. Hard to believe that was so long ago. The panel has not yellowed or cracked with the heat of daily exposure to sun and weather. I may get a new charge controller that would allow a wind turbine to be added to the system. That would be my biggest disappointments is that I have too small of a system for what I would want to do with it.

    Not good for the environment to destoy working parts as need 142 billion tons of water to produce one chip and minerals need to dig out according to the specs 15 000 trailers. @@badideametals I work for military and government with data security, even IBAS can't recover a single thing on the hard drive with the right erase tool that rewrites the disk bios and changes the rotation in hard drive and overwrites with zeros and changes the rotation again to ordinary and overwrites one more time with zeros. On SSDs, the chips are swapped and overwritten with zeros and swapped several times. The SSD Bios has been upgraded after solid deletion and can be used completely again. However, to get the contract (or in this case, the agreements), sometimes we have to do things their way... and in this case, they have asked for drives to be destroyed. So I made a video explaining the process I use when I am asked to destroy the drives.

    You are spot-on to flex the outer lip. Use a "bucket opener" to flex the lip open as you press down with your other hand. No pounding with a mallet needed. Also handy to have the opener to remover the ring if a bucket gets damaged. They can be found for less than $4 US.

    I've never even heard of a gamma lid. So there's that. Home depot should sell those with their buckets.

    • @badideametals
      @badideametals 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some people do sell them already assembled. These are good for sealing food and material that you want to keep dry. We keep rice and flour in bins like these in a food storage, as well as in our pantry. I was surprised at how difficult they are to put together when they are sold separately. There were enough videos showing how to jump on them to seal them, that it implied that a number of people have trouble getting these together. When I got the first 2 together in just a few minutes, my wife recommended that I do this video. The other ways (like jumping on them) must have some people going to the hospital after the bins squeeze out from under them. I fear for those trying the "acrobatic" approach. I do have some fun videos coming out. I have 3 started ... none finished. I hope to drop all these videos soon :) I can't wait to show everyone what I have been up to this summer.

    That Dell looks like a 20 MHz 386 to me. You don't come across 386 laptops very often. It seems like 286 ones held on for pretty long* and they were superseded by 25 MHz 486s without much of a 386 age in between. The thing you thought was the CPU was probably the SVGA controller. I'd keep those "cache" (no they're not, they're probably just normal RAM) RAM modules from the Dell, back then every expansion was proprietary, so hunting down the right module for your ancient collectible laptop is getting haaaaaard! Sucks that you have to scrap those whether you want it or not. *) if you compare a 16 MHz 286 with a 16 MHz 386, well... turns out, often enough, the 286 ends up being the faster of the two. It's certainly the cheaper of the two. It just won't run 32 bit software though.

      It is sad I destroy so much history. Most of what I tear down off camera are Core2 systems and old Power Edge Dell servers ... much of these are so common, many people and companies just drop them into landfill. That is sad for so many other reasons. However, there are some machines that come to be for recycling that I am asked to deconstruct for the benefit of the channel, and for those viewers who are also curious to see how they are constructed. That Dell, I was messing with computer upgrades and building my own before that machine was constructed... however, laptops were hard for my family to come by when they were new back in the late 80s to mid 90s. I bought my first computer in 1991, and upgraded it after I sold my drums and walked away from the band I was in at the time in favor of computer graphics and animation... huh, that was so long ago. And laptops were for the rich. So, that was the first time I have ever looked in a Dell that age. And those Compaqs too for that matter. To your point, those proprietary modules such as RAM and other add-ons are sometimes very hard to find. I will keep the boards and see if there is any value in a re-use market instead of a recycle market. Thank you for your comment.

      I like to turn the circuit boards into trophies as well… most of the time, the systems come to me with cracks and holes, stains and missing parts… the boards inside are usually still clean and worth putting in A-frame displays. But hey, I can’t save everything either :) … some things get torn apart for the silver and sometimes gold… like these. I am saving that 486 though. That was a rare find.

    What kind of fumes come off the lye?

    • @badideametals
      @badideametals 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sodium Hydroxide can cause major irritations which lead to nausea and vomiting, and even necrosis or dying tissues which can be very serious if not treated. When sodium hydroxide turns into a vapor due to boiling, the lye compounds are transported with the evaporating water in the form of steam. It can get in your eyes and burn. But worse yet, it can get in your lungs and do nasty damage. In short, be aware of where and how you are working with Lye. Know how to protect yourself. Masks and eye protections are recommended.

    • @badideametals
      @badideametals 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I share the steps in previous videos... but the basics: 1. Soak fingers in HCl for 1 week with O2 injected in with a bubbler 2. Rinse and isolate fingers with water 3. Refine using 3 parts HCl + 1 parts NHO3 until Au is in solution 4. Neutralize with Sufamic Acid 5. Drop Au with Sodium Metabisulfide 6. Rinse and Melt with the help of Borax Those are the steps. The art of refinement is ratios, and filtering. But do be very careful when dealing with acids and heat. Accidents can be fatal. Always understand what can and will happen. Have a plan for when bad things to happen.
