Sambuca di Sicilia is the town of my great great grandfather, though my great grandfarther was born in San Biagio Platani. Someday I'll be moving to Sicily, coming back to my roots.
Thanks DauvO and Meredith for this video, i've always been curious about these €1 homes. I too am going through the jure sanguinis process to gain citizenship, my family is also from Sicily.
My great-grandparents are from there, and I'd like to figure out how to move back. I did visit Palermo and am learning Italian. The mayor of Sambuca has the same last name, as well as palazzo ciaccio.
My family is from central Italy and I plan to buy something there one day soon...it would be great if anyone that can and has a desire... buy in Southern Italy....reclaim your roots and help out this amazing part of the world
I have 20,000 AUD - what could I get for that in Italy - perhaps in the country or by the beach? I work online so would need a connection to make money but would also like to eventually open a small cafe. Love you videos. Veyr inspiring.
In most comune organizations there is a registry office called, 'ufficio anagrafe'. This office is responsible for tracking everything. I can ask some advice since I haven't done it myself, but I believe this is the office that will have access to past documents. But you would need to know which community to search in for this method.
I am very motivated to invest in Italy thanks to you! very very educational your work! For non-EU (non-European) foreigners, do you know what documents we require for the property purchase protocol? any special permission? any special procedure? Italy has a property under the program to repopulate the towns of southern Italy and activate tourism, is there immigration support to apply for residence in Italy? Thanks for your support! Ok
Dauvo, I want to purchase a home in Italy. I just sold my home in California and am a free agent. Is there anyway doing this during this virus? Do you have any recommendations?
How much would it cost to renovate a small house such as this? can anyone give a rough estimate? Are you allowed to do the work yourself, if you have the necessary skills and tools? Thanks!
Hi Oren, there are some things you can do yourself, but structural work and trades like plumbing and electrical need a specialist. So it's not like some other countries where you pick up the hammer and start doing a rehaul. A rough estimate would be 700 euro per square meter for the really run down properties. This is from a quote that is more than 6 months old, so I'll be updating information soon.
I have loads of questions for this young woman! I too plan to obtain my citizenship (grandparents from Sicily) and ideally purchase a home in Termini Imeresi for my retirement. (Not a 1 euro home though). Is there any way to reach out to her? I'm curious about the community of people she Whatsapps with, as well as getting work done while she is out of the country. Thank you!
If you want to send me a message I can forward it to her and see if she is willing to respond. We definitely don't want to swarm her with requests so it is best mandated this way for now. My contact info is in the about page is the channel.
Love to follow her on Instagram, can you share her information? Also, would be good to know of the group she mentioned, as well as budget for remodeling. Thank you both!
Hi Janet. I've never lived in Sicily, I hope someone from there can answer better for you. What I do know is if you are dependent on a job once arriving, it might not be the best choice for you. If you are set regarding finances, that is a different story altogether.
I think it's great that she will easily be able to get italian citizenship, but what about those of us who don't have family from there but would love to live there??
From what I gather from this video she bought that place sight unseen and looking at some of the footage you and Carl have provided on the one Euro homes I think she dodged a bullet . she could have wound up buying a very bad property.
She did find a decent one. It had some strange spaces originally, but that was really the worst of it. Now she's purchase the place next door and really opened up her options.
Like the US... hard to answer. I'd say the majority of taxes are lower or at least for the majority of the people. I have a series of videos explaining how taxes work. You can find it here. th-cam.com/play/PLHjU53uyDJzi4qfknW57afAU6dvTfPJA_.html
Interesting video, for sure. However, most Americans would find Meredith absolutely crazy for what she did. First, who has $5000 to wire to some bank in Sicily, without any guarantee that you'll get your money back? Is Sicily less corrupt now? Second, who in their right mind would bid on a seriously old, vacant, stone building in Sicily, from a photo on the internet, without seeing it in-person first and securing engineer approval? Third, who can afford to fly to Sicily every month to look in on a major construction project? Fourth, who the hell knows where someone will want to be, or the health status of the person, by the time he/she reaches retirement age? Fifth, what return on investment is possible, when many of these ancient cities are dying or dead, and there aren't enough modern people interested in living this ancient lifestyle? I'm glad Meredith found a connection to her dad. Maybe that's enough to motivate all this madness. For me, all I see is one very risky gamble after another, and the odds of success are almost borderline delusional, if not absolute delusion.
Have heard many horror stories about 1 euro purchases, it usually costs way more for the renovation than the property is worth afterward.. Most people say that it is better to buy a home in good condition, a lot less hassle and more cost effective.
I've not heard them as horror stories, but it's true that your money can go further in other markets. Do you know someone personally that has purchased a €1 home? Just curious.

That's awesome! I didn't see San Biagio Platani, but I'll check it out now on google!
That was helpful info that you dont get ownership till the work is done ...great interview as well ,,Thanks for sharing !
Thanks got watching Carla. Just remember every community follows different rules

My wife is Italian-American and we're looking to buy in Palermo. We're in Chicago so maybe we'll see you in Sicily!
What a great outcome. Great story.

Wow very cool! Start by an extended visit. It might not be the same as you expect to live there. Really cool story!
That little balcony room would make a nice sewing /craft room.
I'm sure I could find a use for it too!

Thanks for saying so Joanne!
Lovely great job lady!! Love it DauvO Im next Thank you for a great video Ciao !!!
You mentioned or Meredith did this retire in Italy webpage. I googled it. Couldn't find it. Can you pass it along?
Sure. Can you contact me on Facebook and I will send you the info and some other references as well.
Great video and channel, Davido. One question. Do you have a link to that website Meredith mentioned about retire to Italy? Thank you.
My Sicilian Granmother was a Tabbone
Wow! Did she pronounce it like an American? or an Italian? just curious...
@@DauvO she never left Italy. So the only pronunciation she knew was Sicilian
If I need to purchase a home in Italy would I be able to reach out to you for advice and walkthroughs?
Really want to visit sambuca
It was a pretty cool town, I'd like to go back and spend more than an hour there. That's for sure. In the summer next time.
I want to see it when it’s been remodeled.
So do I! She said she would share her progress over time. Too bad she has to postpone the work for a bit. Hopefully she can start up again soon.
You can follow her on instagram. She gave me permission to share it. I think she will be posting updates over time. Instagram: meredith_tabbone

DauvO thanks a lot and all the best to o you too
DauvO this is helpful, thank you! Any idea if the restrictions on these programs will lift after we move pass the virus?
They should move towards as before, but it is hard to say when everything will be back to normal 100%

Are there any country homes for the 1 euro
Typically, no. These are usually in the historical center of town which is packed with older properties
Good content. 🇮🇹
Thanks a lot! Always looking for more!

Is Scicily a good place for permanent living?
Hi Janet.
I've never lived in Sicily, I hope someone from there can answer better for you. What I do know is if you are dependent on a job once arriving, it might not be the best choice for you. If you are set regarding finances, that is a different story altogether.

I completely agree!
I think it's great that she will easily be able to get italian citizenship, but what about those of us who don't have family from there but would love to live there??
I want to buy.dont have us or eu passport. Can I buy
It depends on what country you are from. If your country allows you to purchase real estate in Italy then it is a yes!

It would be nice if she can teach English so it can help with the tourist promotion.

Even so, isn't it still cheaper than anything in a major US city? Where I live the average home is over 300K.
Very deceiving this “1 EURO” 🤔
