I'm not your channels target demographic (62) but I love what your doing, please don't become jaded, stay, well stay you! I mentioned in one of your Unicorn Corvette videos(which is how I found your channel) that I want to use a car restoration to try to get in the head of my autistic grandson and hopefully take advantage of his focus on cars and connect on a level that allows me to teach him the skills involved. I'm in Canada and I'm searching for a corvette project here first because I've rebuilt a 76 from a basket case before. I know what is ahead in that journey, but there's a part of me that wants to share my love of that particular platform when he and I get to take it back on the road, and see if I can connect with him in the emotion of shared joy. Once I find a project I'll share the progress with you and your viewers.

Simple solution how to decide: if the sweepstakes talks more about the car that you could win, then it´s bad. When the emphasis is more on the charity, then there´s a bigger probability that it´s legit!

I love the snarky comments. LOL! I actually just took down my facebook because of people harassing me about my views on the covid-19 virus. It is really hard to think outside of the box. It is super hard to call out people you think are doing something wrong. Keep preaching! People need to hear it and hopefully one day more people will open their eyes and understand.

the only thing you need to know about COVID-19 is that its all Trump's fault and the republican's fault. It actually being China's fault is a lie, the only way to fix this is more socialism and over-arching government control forever....and all hail Mighty and Virtuous Communist China.

A while ago I nearly got snookered into a club subscription to Restomods via a giveaway they were having.
The prize was I believe $10,000 in cash as well as a cherry-looking 1969 Charger.
Cut to today, and either they have the things in a warehouse someplace, or there really is no car and they're just blowing smoke, as roughly the same ad is being aired at the start of youtube videos, with the same car as a prize.

I've never entered a giveaway. I have no intention of being part of the band of people that supports this type of thing. I have donated to certain people that needed assistance. And once we figure out our finances after this pandemic. I will be making a donation directly to genius garage.

My local church/private school has a festival every Fall. Free to get in, the rides and foods cost money. They always raffle off a new BMW 3-Series or similar. They park the car there with dealer info, and you can check it out, etc. Tickets are $100, and they sell between 1,000-1,500 tickets. It’s a great way to raise money for the school. I usually buy a ticket, but dont win. But you DO see who wins! And you know where the extra money went. That’s the only car sweepstakes I ever participate in. (I put a 20 in the basket every Sunday without the chance of winning a car...)

I totally get this, I always said with the internet in general, there are so many resources that show you, but never really show you what you want. They’ll teach you just enough that they make money of off. It’s people like you, people that are doing it because it’s their passion that make the internet worthwhile, so good for you, we all appreciate it. Keep it up, I’ve learned more from your channel, and other small channels with similar levels of passion, than any big company or channel.

In the video game world, the big name in charity is called Humble Bundle. It offers bundles of different video games and you name your own price, the more you give the more "tiers" of games you unlock. then when you checkout, you have three sliders. A slider for the Game developer, A slider for Humble Bundle, And a slider for whatever charity the bundle is for. and you use these sliders to set where you want your money to go. even up to 100% to charity.

Awesome content. You've gained a subscriber! Thank you addressing this issue. In addition to this PSA, I don't register for retail registry, get discounts ect... Went to a great discount home decor store and was offered 10% off to sign up for continued discount. I looked at my wife and replied, "no, my information is worth more than that". Cashier then scanned my 2 items, and announced, "by signing up with todays purchases you will save $5.00 and something cents". I chuckled and then smiled. Kindly answered, "no thank you". Without skipping a beat, I tapped my credit card and went my merry way. My question to myself, along with what I learned in todays video, by using this credit card, how much information did I give away even though I didn't sign up for anything?

I will share a secret with everyone. If you read the fine print on any car give away sweepstakes(TH-cam ect). Everyone can enter for free by sending a 8x10 or a 5x10 card with your name on it to the said address. There is also no limit on how many times you can mail in a entry. TH-camrs some times make it hard to find this information. But by law it has to be there.

Since I don't have cable anymore the only sweepstakes advert I've seen is one on Facebook for nice looking restored muscle and pony cars. Other than that I see StreetSpeed717's car giveaways all the time but that's because I watch his YT channel almost every day. While he has given away a wide assortment a vehicles from a C5 vette plus one modification (winner chose a procharger), to a modified 2012 Jeep Wrangler 4-door, to a $80,000 dollar modified C7 GS vette (the current most expensive). He just gave away an older lifted Duramax in brodozer configuration, and the new giveaway that just started is an older Hellcat Challenger. He always does the builds/modifications on his channel. He even did a video breaking down the cost/profit of doing the giveaways. Which I think it was based on the C7 GS Vette and him and his business partner only made about $10,000 each.

You must not read the fine print, “no purchase necessary, purchase will not increase your chances of winning” you can mail in to sweepstakes for free n get just as many chances to win as anyone else that is paying. Most have a cap, the last I read was 900 entries per participant regardless of entry method. You can send you entries in all by mail, for free, minus the cost of stationary and postage, which are a lot cheaper than purchasing merch or entries. Most sweepstakes also do a 3x and 2x entry period so your mail ins would count more you could get 900 entries in a 3x month in you send 1 per day. Most count 10 entries per 1 mail in

My parents told me in the 80's Hand-A-Thons were a thing. Stuart Toyota in South Florida in 1986 had one, pay 100 dollars put your hand on the car and have a chance to win ect... so my dad put his hand on this 2WD Toyota Pickup and yea 4 days later he ended up in the back of an ambulance and he was a runner up. Someone asked my dad how he was and my dad asked what he was doing and they said you're trying to win this truck, meanwhile, my mom had it traded in already on a funny enough MR2... and my dad was like I don't want this truck I have a truck and pulled his hand off...

Sounds like everyone is winning. Charities are getting more than they would be if nothing was being done. Someone gets a cool ride, and someone is making money for putting it all together. The social media person gets their attention. At least they're cutting the charities in because most people would be happy to participate with 0% going to charity.

I agree completely! I think the underlying issue is that people are interested in instant gratification. That's how these schemes arise. You, on the other hand talk about how long it has taken you to get to this point. The difference is that you are doing what you love and these guys are doing it to make a quick buck. On the side note, I love your rants. If you are ever in Cleveland area, I'd like to buy you a beer.

Although kinda cringy, agreed. These charities are getting "some" money they wouldn't otherwise have. This from an even SMALLER influencer than Genius Garage. So I'm ok since no one is forced to give and the sweepstakes organizer does have some risk and the charity has zero risk. Maybe it's not as we think it should be but it's better than nothing I would think (from the charity point of view). Great content my man!

These influencers are probably getting paid to shill this garbage and the company is using them like you said.
Telling them things like you will get a larger audience, likes subs whatever thusly make more money.
Of course none of that happens for the influencer but the company is making money off their contacts/viewer base.
I smell shit in a lot of this non profit stuff.

I was also surprised to hear 15%, and not closer to 1-5%! Just as I was initially surprised to learn that the March of dimes only gives 10% to actually affect any sort of actual change. Meaning 90% of each dollar they receive just goes to the organization! There’s a real difference in those types of things, and what you are doing here. Your motives are altruistic Casey, because you actually DO care. There’s a reason I have subscribed to your channel and tapped the bell. Also, I was “all in” from the left lane episode 😊. Someone really needed to a call that one out. Thank you for that. Simply put, I’m not seeing the sort of things you are doing being done really anywhere else in social media. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to be entertained and informed via a plethora of other sources as well. I’m hopeful that what you are doing here does gain in reach and influence, and isn’t overshadowed by the others. The problem I’m seeing currently is what sells vs what doesn’t sell as well from a marketing standpoint. Like you said, search engine optimization, and generating buzz, etc. It makes me worry about people in general. Then again, a lot of things are cause for concern with the overwhelming majority of people these days. Perhaps our current state of events will be a great opportunity for a lot of people to take inventory, and really assess what is important. But then again, I’m probably being overly optimistic. At any rate, if you can keep sustaining with what you already have going, and it is working, then maybe don’t tinker with any of it. In the meantime, I massively respect you for being unwilling to “sell out”

I give to Charity but I research the charities that I support. I don't give through charities that force employees to give part of their paycheck so they can keep their job. That is like Coercion on a grand scale. They also don't let you direct your donation fairly. If you designate money to say Boy Scouts They deduct that amount from the overall amount going to that charity. Give to charity but be careful about it.

  • @MIKE-kz7ld
    @MIKE-kz7ld 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I gotta disagree on some points with this. So let's break it down you have
A: Audience (the people you want to reach and have participate in the sweepstakes)
B: Promoter (the social media celebrity)
    C: Sweepstakes Company
D: Charity (that works with the sweepstakes company)
Now the Charity either reaches out to the Sweepstakes company or the sweepstakes company reaches out to the charity. The end goal is still the same, for the sweepstakes company to raise funds on behalf of the charity; funds the charity is having difficulties doing. So the sweepstakes company uses a social media influence to get the message across, it's the easiest way to reach alot of people. Now the term influencer has a negative connotation but I'm sure many here will agree there are many wholesome automotive youtube channels(we're clearly talking about youtubers and it's a car giveaway it makes sense to advocate on car based channels). So we have the influencer advocating for the car giveaway on his/her channel as a way of both building their channel and/or raising profits.(neither of which are neccesarily wrong). The funds are raised the car is given away and in return for setting up and running the sweepstakes the sweepstakes company takes a percentage as profit, because well, that's what they do as a company. The charity also receives funds. So where is the harm here? The sweepstakes company isnt a charity it operates for profit. The influencer got paid and regardless got their followers to indirectly donate to a charity. And a audience member received a car.
If the charity doesn't choose to be named in the giveaway then that is on the charity itself. And if the sweepstakes company wouldn't allow the charity to be presented in the giveaway the charity is free to find a alternative sweepstakes company to use.

I get where you are coming from for sure. The social media influencers promoting this stuff are getting money from these sites like “Omaze”. They aren’t doing it for clout. If the charities were not happy with the ratio of the money split they wouldn’t do it. Yes there are better ways to give to charity that are more direct and worth while. I for one do not give to charity because I work almost paycheck to paycheck, but if I give $10 and get put into a hat to win a supercar and some of the money goes to charity as well. Who loses? It makes car people more likely to give up some of our precious build budget where other wise we wouldn’t even think about it.

Oh heck, look at Goodwill. They pay out such a low percentage to their cause. And they do it with free stuff. Look at all these things. It's a better percentage than Goodwill that's for dang sure. I think a 30 10 60 split would be better and make them disclose like most foundations do. It's not as charitable at all.

Real talk for a second you need to focus on real content. You are a fantastic storyteller you are a good driver and a good mechanic, in short you are an interesting person. Don't just make videos ranting about things the average car guy doesn't care about. This is meant to be constructive and make your Channel better, I want to see you do really well on youtube, keep at it.

Who cares if they are doing it to make themselves more famous, of course that's what they're doing. Its a win-win, they get more money, omaze gets more money, and charity gets more money. It's better than a valvoline sponsorship or whatever where its just companies making money (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Have you noticed lately that behavior of “the influencers” whether they be a group, company, politician, political group, or “celebrity” (I use quotes because many of these people are famous only because they look good and have no other talents or abilities to justify their fame) seem to be promoting their own agendas with an heavy undercurrent of desperation? It is as if they must make all the money they can, as fast as possible before either the world catches on to how completely phony they really are, find out what they have really been hiding, and their career or business fizzles or, alternatively, they know something about the future that the rest of us don’t (...and it ain’t good news) that is forcing them to make as much money as they can, as fast as they can, right now ... while they still can?

Think about it they don't post your chances of winning even through out averages like a lottery does which it basically is. Also 70% over head lets them pay how ever made people they want and crazy salaries which they don't seem to post ether. If you take two seconds to think about it you know someone or many people are getting rich and it isn't the charity. Donate locate to somewhere where you can be involved in the community.

    • @filmandfirearms
      @filmandfirearms 4 ปีที่แล้ว

They aren't, they're making it back on the sweepstakes. The one I've been getting the most ads for is their McLaren GT with $20,000 cash. That's $230,000 in expenses. Entries start at $10 and go up to $100. At the $10 mark, they have to sell 23,000 entries to break even. That's not that many, considering many of the TH-cam channels and influencers they partner with have individual followings in the millions. If 50,000 people buy at the $10 mark, and we all know that not everyone goes for the cheapest option, then they'd be looking at more than a 100% profit. Of course, a decent percentage goes to the charity in question, but I'd be willing to bet they sell well over 100,000 for each one

I've always found those omaze giveaways shady AF, giving away Mclarens, Teslas and whatever goes north of 100k USD. The lack of videos promoting the winners makes me wonder if this is really working for the greater good.

That's why I stopped giving to the United Way, take a look at their books... The Better Business Bureau's standards, published in 2003 by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, recommend that at least 65 percent of the nonprofit's total expenses should be for program expenses. The nonprofit's total expenses should not include more than 35 percent for fundraising.
