I was born in 1953 and my father used the M3 when it came out the next year but ended up using an M2 and an M2-R during the rest of his life. For decades I have been using the great M6 TTL and the fantastic R8, but I went digital with a Leica T camera this year to which I can attach both my M and R lenses and still get brilliant photos. I tore down my darkroom in our garage last month which had the amber safelights from my father's 1950s darkroom. I have been using Photoshop since its creation and it has totally met my processing needs since buying the Leica T. And the HP Envy 4520 printer I bought makes absolutely stunning b&w and color prints on HP's semi-gloss paper, surpassing what I got in my darkroom!
Wow, I am glad that I finally found a photographer on youtube that uses film AND produces good images. Your work looks really really good in comparison to some guys on this platform who think that a „good“ camera maked good pictures.
07:44 - Viewfinder Correction: Classic M6 DID have a run of 0,85 viewfinders. Maybe at the end of “classic” M6 production around 1998, just before Leica started making the TTL for flash versions.I doubt they are especially rare or valuable. I had a 0.72 and later bought a 0.85 as soon as I heard of them because I was mostly shooting bands in clubs. Lighting was often terrible and the subject was usually about 15-30 feet away. Higher magnification helped with seeing in the dim rooms and a larger image helped focusing. I got hold of an old 85mm Summarex which was the fastest medium telephoto I could afford at the time. As you touched on I also had a small, portable two lens kit that was very capable and were the only lenses I had for years. I eventually sold the .72. I kept everything else. As a matter of fact the old battle horse, 0.85 M6 + Summarex are set up on.a little tripod on my desk right now. Same basic look, black M6 (that’s black chrome btw) with a silver lens. Maybe I should make a video about my camera too? Take care.
I love that you'd take the time to make a really deep review of a camera that feels like it needs no introduction. But since it's such a classic there really aren't that many deep dives. Really enjoyed it!
I have both 0.72 and 0.58 M6ttl. I also bought a 1.25x magnifier that turns 0.58 into 0.72 and 0.72 into 0.85. It's worth the price. You can still find the magnifier for sale. They are my everyday tools for photoreportage. Thank you for sharing.
I just picked up my first Leica. The M3. I'm a 50mm guy and I'm used to shooting without an internal meter. Super excited to put some rolls through it. :)
Beautifully elegant and lovely photos! Maybe I'll own one some day... Maybe 😀. Thanks for the video, inspiring me to take my Olympus film camera back out
Epic video as usual. The detail macro shots you get of these cameras are so good. Goals for sure. I was dying when you added Zinc in post like I had to on my video Hahahaha.
Bought an M6 last November and I love it. The way it feels in my hands. It just inspires me to take it with me all the time. Loved the example photos in the beginning. Would be interesting to see which films you used.
M6 gang here!!! Haha. New sub!! Love your review, very very thorough. And I'm one of the weirdos that looove a black camera body with a silver lens. So I was watching the entire video gushing at the look of your camera. Silver 35mm summicron is next on my Leica glass list :) Congrats on the channel, production is dope!
Yeah you wrong (Purposely harsh for no other reason than it's refreshing to absolutely correct something on the internet for a change :-). I had a classic M6 with a 0.85 viewfinder. Thank you for your videos and the quality of them, extremely helpful and a pleasure to watch. Keep them coming Benj. Peace
Nice video. I’ve had my M6 for 11 years now. I recently had to get the shutter repaired, so I got the MP finder upgrade done while it was there. It’s perfect now.. I plan to be buried with it.. 😅 You mentioned that speed dial direction is different on the two M6 versions, but I just wanted to note that if you have an older M as well (pre-M6), the classic version of the M6 might be a better option (if you’re not using ttl flash) to use side by side since the shutter dials will also rotate the same direction. It’s a little less confusing when you’re in the moment. Also, maybe I’m weird, but I like and prefer the basic arrows for the meter. It keeps the viewfinder clean and mine’s always been accurate.
I just got my M4 & I absolutely love it. Now i’m thinking about selling it once it’s been CLA’d & going for a M6. It’d be nice not having to carry my light meter around
Honestly your M4 is a much nicer camera than the M6. Don't let the popular opinion fool you. You will get used to the reading the light. I haven't used a meter in over 5 years when using my M2 and M3. If I need a built in light meter for lets say slide film I use my Konica Hexar RF. Happy shooting.
I’m still very much a amateur film photography but I’ve recently been encouraged to take up this beautiful artform and this camera would be such a dream to own especially being that it has a light meter. Also, how nice is that camera strap!
I bought a minolta xgm for like 50 bucks with a 50mm 1.7, included light meter and the vintage minolta glass has lots of unique character. Doesnt have to be leica :D
Benj Haisch I know this is cliche and lots of people say this... but I have never won a giveaway like this. Super stoked to win and excited to use this strap from Clever Supply Co!
I love that the M6 is light and compact other than my 70D that so heavy do kids photography and I'm definitely buying me one especially its image quality and the lenses are so affordable where I live and not alot of technology and easy to use as per your video. M6 for my Kids Photography.
The M6 is not a light camera. It is small, but it is not light. Everything is made from metal, so the body alone weighs about 650g. If you get a Leica lens, too, the whole package can weigh about 1 kg.
More Amazing the Leica MP! :-) flare free finder, newer shutter curtains, smoother film advance, brass iso zink to top plate and I love my MP! the Mechanical Perfection! but the M6 is nice too!
I was thinking what a great special edition this is, but somebody just modified it. Looks really great, though. Bought my classic M6 0.85 a couple of weeks ago. I'd never sell that camera again.
Really like your videos Benj! Thanks you! The M6 is a wonderful camera. Maybe I will buy one some day. 2 years ago when I was in the middle of a decision either for a Zeiss Ikon ZM or an M6 I‘ve decided to buy the Zeiss and I am not regretting it at all. However a Leica M6 is somehow different, especially the haptics. That’s what I‘m missing a little bit.
The MP has an additional central LED for the light meter which makes it feel a little bit more sophisticated!! Not much really considering the price they command and the Viewfinder optics feel a little higher contrast and less prone to flare. Good review and nice simple strap.
Those tiny red LED diodes for light meter were quite common when Leica M6 was new. Just take a look at Nikon FM2 or Zenit 12XP. On the other hand, Olympus OM3, which was much cheaper but also fully mechanical camera, had a full scale, so...
Would love to own a Leica one day. Still on the fence if film or digital. Currently have a QL17 but haven’t fiddled with it that much, always picking up my Fujifilm cameras. Guess a digital Leica fits my needs better. That strap looks super supple, would fit my PD ecosystem well. 😉
For street photography, I only using my Leica 3 times a year, otherwise, iPhone all the time. Another tip, M9 image quality is very similar to this M6 film

A classic! Looks very smart and unassuming with the black Leica dot too

The design of the m6 is the BEST camera design of all time in my opinion. It looks so amazing, and the strap pairs perfectly
Then you need an m3 , it’s a far superior camera

Via a $35 1970’s Nikkor lens :)
Benj Haisch haha amazing!!! Is it a macro lens or you using filters or extension tubes?
The arrows are actually pointing in the direction in which to close/open your Aperture, at least the manual states that.
Nice work Benj. Looking forward to that M6 and M7 comparison video 😉
Love all these videos! You helped me pull the trigger on the 50 lux and I’m so happy with it! ❤️

I've been shooting with the Leica MP and the 50 lux for a few years now. It's hard to put it down. It's one I'm never going to sell.

Right? I never particularly liked the silver M6 models in comparison to the M2/M3/M4, but I do like the blacked out M6 quite a bit.
Got my M6 last year great camera, comes with me most of the time

Very nice. My understanding is that the M6 Classic is easier to repair in terms of the meter.
