    Donovan's mix of creativity, fluid athleticism, and shooting is incredible to watch. He's everything, everywhere offensively
    Also: this game was, like Kobe's 81, necessary for team success which makes his shot attempts not only acceptable but respectable. Unlike many scoring outbursts simply being great players on bad teams deciding to give the fans a night to remember.

    What I love about Mitchell besides his great skill and him being team oriented is how nice a guy he is. One example: a while ago at Cavs pre game shoot around a youngster with an item of Evan Mobley apparel (jersey I believe) seeing Spida but not Evan, asked the former to sign the item. Not only did Mitchell do so, he even sought out Mobley, obtained his signature and returned it to the young fan with 2 signatures. How many players would made said young fan's day by going out of his way like he did? My guess is not very many!

      Like the only era that comes even kind of close would be the early to mid 2000s, but even that dosent quite match it.
      Makes sense too as basketball exploded in popularity outside od USA lately. I can very much remember how just like a decade ago it was not even close to football in almost any EU country, now it is almost on the same level in many of them (tho still not quite there, but nowdays it is easier to go out and play pickup ball 3x3 then a futsal game, when that used to be all we played when I was a kid).

      One thing about the size thing between him and Sexton. They are the same height, but Mitchell's height is misleading as it relates to his overall size. Because while he is 6'1", he has a wingspan of 6'10" (same as LeVert) and weighs 215 lbs (around the same as Tatum). So similar heights, but drastically different builds.

As crazy as that sounds I’ve seen it 4 or 5 times this year so it’s no longer an anomaly. Im talking about shooting 3, getting a tech for someone stepping under you as you land, making the shot, and getting the shot (3 + 1) PLUS the ball back again and then draining a 3. So it takes a certain serendipity you can’t plan for it it’s easier than you think and will feature in playoffs soon too.

    It is crazy how similar this game was to what Luka did just a week ago. Both games adjusted to who Luka and Mitchell are as players, sith Luka getting 21 rebounds as one of the best guard rebounders ever while Mitchell scored more due to his speed and increased pace that follows (dallas has by far the slowest pace in the league I think-not that it is good or bad but it does making scoring outbursts harder due to less shots going up). Both even forced OT in almost the same way.
    Genuinly crazy how much talent there is in the league right now. Lets be real, skills and talent wise Mitchell is basicly a DWade clone with an elite 3pt shot and he still isnt even concidered top10 in the league by most. Sure he isnt half the defender prime Wade was but still to me that is just insane. Put a talent like that in the early 2010s and he is top3 MVP candidate almost every season.

    No mention about mitchell's CLEAR line violation at the end of regulation, Ben? I'm a bit disapointed. You've always had (from what I can tell) some of the most objective and informative Basketball analysis content out there. For there to be NO mention of such a critical and obvious miss by the referees, and for your commentary at that point to be suggesting it was only mitchell's brilliance that won the game, ignores the fact that that play was NOT POSSIBLE to make within the rules of the game, and as such needs to - at the least - be viewed with that in mind.
    I'm a mitchell fan. I think he is sorely underrated. I think his play this game was beyond incredible, and that he deserves all the accolades that his efforts bring to him. I think your analysis of this game was great too, Ben, as per usual!
    BUT, given the utterly crucial and clear nature of the violation at that stage of the game, I think that mention needs to be made about it for a true analysis and representation of the outcome of the game, in my opinion.

    • @leungsz
      @leungsz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes technically it's a free throw lane violation, so a sharper referee crew would have caught it. These intentionally-missed free-throw routines work out so rarely, they just rarely call any related violations either. Luka's putback missed FT, on the other hand, was legit.

    I knew Donovan was capable of something stupid like this. We saw him scoring 40 and 50 almost effortlessly in the bubble a couple years back. He's developed into an even better player and as the #1 guy in Cleveland it was only a matter of time and circumstance before he did something crazy like this. The truly scary thing is too, I think he can do it again. This guy is an all time scorer. He doesn't have the volume of points that other guys have had due to how much time he's missed in his young career or the post season success that guys like Luka have, but it's just a matter of time and circumstance before he gets those too.

    It’s amazing that you didn’t mention Allens travelling violation on his last put back and Mitchells lane violation on the missed FT.

    • @RudieObias

      Every NBA game has officiating errors because referees are people and they make mistakes. If this is the case, then every NBA game and every stat should have an asterisk

    • @maxforstag

      @@adam551982 You must not have been watching for too long, as the officials' robbery of the Kings '02 WCF clearly takes the cake. And that was with a trip to the Finals on the line. The Bulls also shot 34 free throws in this game. If it was poorly officiated, it was poorly officiated on both sides.

    • @jpeppermusic
      @jpeppermusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RudieObias You are right, refs have a very hard job, but with so much on the line and all the money in it, it's insane that the review system is this clunky and inefficient.
      Along with basketball, I also love tennis and soccer; both sports that have recently seen solutions that help refs with their almost impossible job and have balanced out calls that don't make people think they were robbed by poor officiating.
      Even if you excuse the excessive foul calls, you can't argue with the lane violation at the end of the 4th, by which point Mitchell had 58 points. This should still go down as a great individual game, but not a legendary one.

    I said it a few years ago when he beat pg13 and Westbrook as a ROOKIE in a playoff series. I don’t think he got nearly enough credit and it seemed like luka was getting all this praise for losing to the clippers twice in a row in the first round. I said it back then that he reminds me of dwade but with a long distance sniper. His body type and size along with the athleticism is very similar the difference is obviously the defensive end but man I would sacrifice the defense for his jumper…could you imagine if dwade had a sniper like that…he would literally still be playing today but no wade went to the cup as the flash until his body couldn’t give anymore. If he would’ve adapted his game for longevity and didn’t go to the cup as a relentless monster who knows where he would be. He still had a few more years in the tank but he wasn’t going to sacrifice his body he wanted to stay young as possible for his kids in order to play with them and be active. Playing later after your body has already endured so much wasn’t worth the risk to him. But my god man this dude Mitchell has potential to be a top 5 SG of all time.
