Recently just watched your "first play" and after the intro where you gave the pointers now to play. I Insta bought it.
But have been laughing because my track is really wobbly. So got my notebook ready for your tips.

Don't get deterred because your track work will only get better. On my first play through I rebuilt my sawmill maybe 3-4 times, redesigned my logging camp, and now I'm on my second playthrough where I started laying track at the sawmill to establish a great foundation for a map that has great multi-player potential. So far it's just between the freight depot and sawmill but I'm taking what I've learned from the first map to redesign as needed. If you want to check it out and get an idea, you can find my map on the minizwerg site, search for "Libra"

When it comes to creating perfectly straight track, you can lay a 90, then lay your 3 ft, linking on one side of the 90 and then the opposite side and then keep going. The nice thing about this method is that you only need one crossover piece.

A warning regarding this method that you need to be aware of.
There is a bug that tends to strike that is the phantom track bug, it doesn't happen as often now, but using a lot of crosses seems to be a way to bring it back out of the woodworks.
What happens is, you delete the crosses and think you are done with it, however they have just turned phantom / invisible to you.
As you roll along the track to enjoy the fruits of your labor, you suddenly have a massive derail, as if there was another piece of track in there, but the track is smooth as a baby bottom.
This is also caused by super short pieces, like in Squirrel's crossover switch setup... So if you want to be safe, save often and test your track.
If you find the phantom track, report it, and then you have to spam the delete track AND groundworks and you should be rid of it... And sadly your labor as well.

[Caution, long comment: Please skip if you're not compulsively tedious]
If you'd like to be a perfectionist, I have a convenient trick for having switch legs land on the end of track that is more precise than that little bit of error introduced by the "Rule of 6" (though I still use the "Rule of 6" for my double track crossovers):
Lets say you want a right-hand switch leg to land on the end of your track
-First, starting from the open end of track, place a left-hand switch (lever side doesn't matter).
-Then, place right-hand switch on the end of that left leg.
-Punctuate with a 90-crosspiece on the end of the right leg (From above, this should mirror what you're hoping for, but with the straight legs aiming the wrong direction).
-Now, delete the switches and begin facing back at your track from the 90-xpiece.
-Place the same switches in the same order, and you will end with your desired switch with its leg perfectly lined with your original track piece (the lever side matters for this final switch). Delete the unnecessary switch and 90-xpiece helper.
Basically, this creates a parallelogram between the open rail and the 90-xpiece helper you placed that accounts for the disparity in leg length for the two switch types. This principal can then be extended for more applications like a full yard of 90-xpiece spaced tracks.
For Squirrel's example at [23:25], he could place switches like this:
    -Left-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the leg.
    -Right-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the straight.
    -Right-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the straight.
    -Right-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the leg.
Delete everything but the final 90-xpiece helper, which is now the starting point to lay everything in the exact same order (lever sides matter for these placements:
    -Left-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the leg.
    -Right-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the straight.
    -Right-hand, with a 90-xpiece on the straight.
-Right-hand, or hand-placed gentle curve if that is your preference.
-Extend straight rails from your yard tracks into the switches you just created.
-Marvel at how much time you just spent for the modicum of satisfaction you garnered.
If you made it here, have fun you crazy Railroaders!

When you want to start a straight from previous track you do not need to place 3 x-sections, you put down one and then start building by locking the new track in both ends of this x-section.
Also, for the sidings i would recomend building them by placing the switches without a x-section between them. This is going to bring the track closer together and you can then transfer goods between cars. You can then load a long train by going back and forth with a porter with 2-4 cars transfering cargo insread of having to run back and forth to align the train with the loading ramps.

You have z-randomization in your groundworks (Its not flat).
You do things the very long way around to build parallel tracks and get switches between them.
Poor management of splines with multiple splines where there should be only one (It matters by the time you have the whole map built).
Sections of tracks in a single straight going forwards and backwards (track has a direction).
The length of spline segment you use causes odd gap spacing between the ties.

  • @chriscapezza3264

The other crucial key you missed is when laying parallel track, always start building from the SAME SIDE. The straight track isn't exactly 90°, so if you build from opposite ends, you'll be slightly off

I am sorry dude, I love your videos but right from the first track building tip I think you over complicating things. Just click on the first crosstie when you place the crossover piece and you have the same height everytime. When it is done like you say you never get the height exactly the same as the previous time because you always are a bit off. Maybe it is just me wanting to have things super perfect without any variables, but I just had to tell you. 😅
